In 2010 I attended a 30th anniversary screening of MANIAC on Houston st at the Sunshine Cinema. Lustig was there and was very cool… he said his mom attended two screenings of the film with him in Times Square because she was so proud of him even though she wasn’t crazy about what kind of film it was. That is one cool mom! (I’m guessing she hadn’t seen his earlier films!)
This is definitely one of the better slashers out there and it's a excellent blu release of it too. I have met Savini three times and he basically can't be bothered with me either.
Such a great sleazy film, a little correction, Maniac came out in NY in 1980, not ‘82. It also gives a great snapshot of that time. The LA Times refused to run ads for it.
I only have seen Maniac once. But having Caroline Munros character going to dinner with Joe Spinells character after a 5 minute conversation was one of the more far fetched things in slasher history.
Speaking of slasher films ... Just saw GRADUATION DAY at the 12 hours of terror in Cleveland. Horrible movie that is hilarious today. Don't know how much of the humor is intentional but a very young Vanna White is dreadful enough in a b role to keep up anyone's spirits.
Spinell is one of the most underrated character actors of the whole era. Maniac, Cruising, Rocky, Taxi Driver, Godfather 1 and 2. He was unforgettable
How about an episode on Combat Shock, Pete?

Maniac is a slasher classic indeed one of my top5 horror movies of all time Thanks Pete 👍
Halloween and The Burning are pretty much the only slasher films you need.

1980
The REMAKE isn't bad but can;t compete with SPINELL!
