A south London school's decision to ban certain slang words was widely derided but it also attracted some high-profile support. Do children know instinctively what type of language to use in different social settings, or does this knowledge need to be instilled with strict bans? Lindsay Johns, a writer who mentors young people in London, debates the issue with writer and professor of children's literature Michael Rosen

I am extremely appalled at 4:24. If you are as educated as you claim to be Lindsay Johns then you would know that nyam is not street slang. In fact it is Jamaican patois and it means to eat. Peckham and the surrounding area had a lot of Caribbean immigrants that came over into this country and so their dialect has been infused into the culture. Just like the Hispanic culture is now being infused into the modern Peckham culture.

IMHO banning is a bit of a radical solution for a cultural expression. Whether is it a representation of something desirable or unpleasant in terms of one's aspirations and social standards, street slang still is a cultural expression because it speaks about the lifestyle from the region in question. Since it's possible to master both orthodox English and slangs, I agree with Michael that it should be studied rather than banned. Besides, there's a difference between saying: "speaking in an orthodox manner will augment your chances of earning prestigious positions in life", and saying: "the way you talk is wrong, get it out of here". Knowledge is power, and knowing what dialect to use in what situation is a form of knowledge - of slyness, if you will.

As an academic in a university English department--admittedly in the US, not the UK--I can personally attest that all the academics I know use slang to some degree. I see the argument that Johns is making, but the idea that academics continually speak like academics (and that we don't have our own forms of academic slang) suggests a limited exposure to people actually working in academia. I tend to speak pretty academic in my everyday life, but my language--including in my classroom and the videos on my channels--is run through with slang, colloquialisms, pop usage, etc., none of which actually diminishes the points I'm making for any competent listener. In a job talk I recently did for a pretty prestigious university, I incorporated pop culture references, jokes, and slang. The presentation was well received by a group of English faculty and grad students.

The thing is; slang will keep orbiting through society and peoples vocabulary when theirs grime musicians that use abbreviations such as "bruv" "KMT" etc in their lyrics everyday! which will influence alot of young people so it would be a challenge to ban slang.

Both speakers presented interesting points, but Michael Rosen definitely swayed me with his arguments. I think it’s elitist of Lindsay Johns to state that speaking slang makes you sound stupid and uneducated. Allowing people to be bidialectal (or more) allows them to develop cognitively, I believe. And it makes learning at school a little more interesting.

To argue that language can, and should be “controlled” in any way is stupid, in my opinion. For a few reasons -
      1. You _might_ be able to control the way a child speaks in school, but once they are out of education, they’re going to speak however they like, and their language will be influenced by other factors than education (social groups, family, etc...)
      2. If you wish to control the way in which someone speaks, what type of language would you use as a model? That is to say, if there is a point in time where you believe language was “perfect” and has been getting worse since, what would you define that point as, and why?
      3. Language change has almost always been criticised by someone. Even if you do believe there was a point where language was “perfect” it is almost certain that that form of language was criticised as being worse than what came before.
