Ferrite cores in real life applications - an ESD example

  • In answer to one of subscribers, we did this practical demonstration. This also shows that all the theories we discussed so far play a role in real life engineering. An ESD event is perfect for this demo, because it has both low and high frequency contents. Viewers can see the difference it makes when using different ferrite core materials.

    Great as always!
    5 single turn ferrites have lower impedance than a single 5 turn ferrite because the impedance is proportional to N^2. This is why 5T works better at LF than 5 1T ferrites.
    As you said at high f, the parasitic capacitance is higher in the 5T ferrites than in the 5 1T ferrites.
    In the 5T ferrite the current is 5 times of 1T ferrite, and the ferrite can start to saturate.

    Brilliant! A really good idea to demonstrate it like that using the ESD pulse. Many thanks for taking the time.
    In the past, I have fixed issues by putting several (single turn) ferrites on a cable, but I think you've just demonstrated that multi-turn + single turn may actually be a lot better in many cases (not least the benefit of being able to fit them in tight spaces).

    very interesting, great showing! What would be the expected result if you moved the single turn ferrite closer to the ESD gun strike? HF resonant amplitude increases, no change on LF?
