Her first STOL competition!

  • This is my first time in a STOL event. I unexpectedly decided to join in on the fun, because....why not!
    STOL is short field takeoff & landing. In the competition, your takeoff & landing distance is added together to get your score.
    Since this competition, I’ve practiced a ton and can now kick old me’s butt.
    Enjoy!

    Hey, you had fun! Great to see it, the "Flying Cowboys" will have competition from the "Flying Cowgirls" soon enough!🤠👍 (Hafta edit in: "Dream-sicle-5CC is a beautiful plane, so glad you guys have her & share the joy!) I have a beautiful orange & white Carbon Cub SS, BUT IT'S RC!! (LOL!🤣) I can make it take off in 10 feet or less but nailing the landing mark & short rollout is tougher with the energy of a 7foot wingspan model airplane!(no brakes rollout!) It isn't any easier when doing it full scale! It has been good to see young ladies getting more involved in RC flight, knowing that some of these ladies will continue on to careers in aviation and carry the torch further, possibly having been inspired by ladies like you!
    *There is always the possibility you could get another plane & start setting it up for serious competition, of course to the furtherment of inspiration, education & the joy of aviation😁!

    dumb question: don't smaller wheels accelerate faster? i have folding bike with 12 inch wheels and it accelerates to its top (slow) speed right away. my normal bike with 20-something inch wheels has a much higher top speed but takes longer to reach it.

    You should plan on entering next years ArkanStol competition .This year a 17 year old female pilot Jaden Newman flying her SportCub came in second place. It was her first ever competition.. In the 2 runs she got beat out by 8 tenths and 5 tenths of a second. Results are posted at the Arkanstol.com website. Prior to the race she is interviewed here ua-cam.com/video/L97wd8L1Xb0/v-deo.html Time 13:52

    I guess I’m gonna be the one to say it. And first you should know that I’m a fan, and mean well with what I’m about to say. So here it goes..
    The first 28 seconds of your video could be the start of any Air Safety Institute offering.. I’m paraphrasing here of course , but to me you’re basically saying is I felt a bit pressured as a female to enter into a competition in which I have not trained for, and in a plane that I don’t have a whole lot of time in.
    That to me is not a good example to set as you do have a big audience that follows your aviation journey. Just a thought..
    Again I hope you realize that I am a fan and I’m not trying to be mean, just honest. Be well Mindy!

    • @Schmiiindy
      @Schmiiindy  4 роки тому +12

      Will I didn’t fly the plane outside of my comfort limits 😊 I was even super easy stepping on the brakes as I didn’t know the planes limits on that. But doing this stuff is experience and that’s key to learning and growing! I’m super proud of myself and respectfully, disagree with you. I know myself better than you (obviously) and would never put myself in a an unsafe position, and hope you will know that. Getting jitters before any type of competition is only human.

    • @in2flying
      @in2flying 4 роки тому

      Schmiiindy I understand where you’re coming from and maybe I did a bad job of explaining my point of view but I wasn’t critiquing your flying or your skill set as much as I was saying that a seasoned pilot with a decent social media platform, could be sending the wrong message to newer GA pilots.. Be well, keep up the great videos etc and I appreciate you taking the time to reply.

    • @Schmiiindy
      @Schmiiindy  4 роки тому +5

      Will ah I see. It was exactly the message I was trying to send, though. I didn’t cut out my nervousness because I think it’s important to show others that not everyone you see online is a super human or the best at everything

    Nice Job Capt. Mindy... up until today I had absolutely "NO IDEA" what a STOL Competition was either! Back in June 1986 I purchased a Primo Restored 1947 J3 Piper Cub N3461K as a Fathers Day Gift for my Dad in Madison, WI (MSN). Long story short...with only 18 total tail-wheel hours time (15 B18 and 3 Citrabia/Bi-annual) I started my teek back to Buffalo, NY (BUF) early on a Sunday Morning with my Telex Hand Held strapped to my leg, a Push to Talk switch velcroed to the stick and my Jepp Case belted into the front seat. Safely through Chicago TCA without a transponder under the hat and around the 1st Lake my second fuel stop was at Wood County, OH... a Grass Strip where I used up almost 2000 feet of runway! As I taxied up to the Gas Pump (Car Gas) the operator said "ya know, you can take-off and land those in under 500 feet", my reply was that I am used to anything falling out of the sky at less than 100 kts over the fence...he asked what I flew, looked at my tassel Dexter Loafers, Designer Jeans and the Flight Bag strapped to the front seat and said... "Corporate HOT Dog"... I agreed paid for my 10 gallons of gas and departed! Anyway... Well Done Kiddo ';-)

    You should know that it's all about building the skills. Back in the day three of us in 152's practicing short fields and someone said it's for a Coke and we let Air Wisconsin have a go and we ended up getting that Air Wille pilot a Coke. He was bigger, heavier and definitely shorter but also more skilled than all of us. I'll bet you have been practicing and building on your new skills, good luck, you have a beautiful little plane keep having fun with it.
