      Just rewatching an old British miniseries in which some WWI vets do not want a stone memorial, esp one paid for by a war profiteer. The whole thing about war memorials is fascinating, and that bit was a great take. Helluva complicated subject irl.

    I loved the Rutherford & Tendi storyline. To me they are soulmates, whether their relationship remains platonic or becomes romantic. I’m glad this was a humorous portrayal and there was no hint of any unrequited feelings. Both were equally as loving and awkward towards each other.

      I'm not an expert, as I don't identify as being on the ace/aro spectrum-and I'd love to hear from someone who has more direct knowledge or experience, but it seems like the two of them are the (WebMD) definition of demiromantic:
      "Demiromantic people can feel sexual attraction to others, but they only experience romantic feelings for people with whom they have a deep connection, which might take years to develop."

    • @TerLoki
      @TerLoki Рік тому +7

      @@GSBarlev ace-spec myself, but not demi. My take given that Rutherford was dating Barnes for at least a little bit in earlier seasons and some comments made referring to Tendi's past in "Something Borrowed, Something Green" is that neither of them is necessarily Ace, they simply have a really deep friendship and just don't feel the need to move beyond that. They're both science nerds that love geeking out at each others' interests and have each others' backs no matter what. Rutherford and Tendi are ride-or-die BFFs, and that's just where they want to be right now. It's certainly POSSIBLE that things may change in the future, but as it is romance would just make things weird between them at this point.
      Also, only semi-related, but I totally read Boimler as Ace, if not totally somewhere one the Aro-spec as well. Yeah there was the whole "romance subplot" in Crisis Point II, but given how quickly he dropped it was willing to accept Nik-Nak I get the feeling that was just him playing a part. There's also Lieutenant Brinson from season 1, but we can chalk that up to the love parasite. Otherwise his fantasies have been shown to be completely non-sexual and he's even gotten annoyed by attractive women throwing themselves at him (JUST SPRAY OFF WITH THE HOSE, LIAN!!).

    • @Aural4444
      @Aural4444 Рік тому +4

      @@TerLoki Or also discover the fact that because they become lovers they won´t stop being BFFs, honestly something that happens is that we put different categories to friendship and romance, tending to be much more selective with romance and much more open with friendship, and give ourselves the impression that once a relationship becomes romantic it can no longer be friendship or if the romance is broken the friendship is also destroyed, which is false in my opinion.
      It is obvious that both Tendy and Rutherford are attracted to each other and love each other very much, but they are also afraid of losing what they already have if they decide to "officiate" their relationship as romantic, because they really value their friendship and what they have. now.
      I'm not against it if their relationship never becomes romantic or sexual, but I would be sorry if they never dared to explore that aspect simply for fear of ruining what they already have when it's obvious that they love each other very much

    Captain Freeman's smooth move at the end of the episode made me gasp. It's easy to think of the Federation's post-scarcity situation as always in the position of power and abundance, but the admiral in the episode shows how that mindset can also turn your resources, time, and even dignity into trivial throwaways. Only by saying, hey. There is something we as a culture are not powerful enough to get. If you want everything you ever could wish for from us, you better deliver the same in return, THIS is what we value THAT much, and we're willing to go THIS hard to get it, could common ground be established.

    The Dominion War memorial is subtly interesting because it shows a shift from war profiteering in the past (think Cousin Gaila), to emphasizing the loss wars create in the greater scales of economies. Very fitting for a Ferenginar in Rom's era.

    • @christopheralthouse6378
      @christopheralthouse6378 Рік тому +5

      And that’s why it works so effectively. Rom makes such a great Grand Nagus because he understands how to reach his people on their level. He knows he HAS to make it about profit and so, the War Memorial tallying up the lost profits of the dead, driving a point clear…a dead Ferengi makes no profit…

    One thing that’s nice to see on Ferenginar is that Rom and Lyta’s reforms are accommodating of more traditional Ferengi values. Sure females are allowed outside of the home, but there’s at least one woman at the restaurant who is still naked, so Rom isn’t forcing them to wear clothing. I think that’s swell. :P ;)
    I’ll liken it to the discussion the other day about the background characters on LD who wear the hijab or turban. Even in situations when religious and cultural restrictions on clothing and dress have historically been (or currently are) tools of oppression, outright bans on specific garb can have their own problems.

      I LOVED this moment for Freeman. When the first season started I was not sure what to make of her character (definitely a departure from old school trek for a captain in terms of her style) but honestly now I think if I were a Star Fleet Captain I would likely be way more like her than any other trek captain ha ha. She is smart, driven and always doing the best she can - she just always gets dealt a bad hand (which makes it funny!). I didn't make that connection about her diplomacy though till you pointed it out and.... of all the species we have seen our beloved Trek captains single handedly bring into the fold of the federation she got the darn Ferengi to join - that is impressive :-D

    Tendi and Rutherford are so wholesome. I also like how the Ferengi would stop at nothing to prevent getting swindled out of a discount. Those newlywed games were absurd, but they were also entertaining. In addition to that, Freeman displayed her shrewdness by beating the Ferengi at their own game was funny. Essentially using the Rules of Acquisition to stop Rom and Leeta’s drawn out terms and conditions.

    This may actually be my favourite Lower Decks episode yet. I love how many expectations and cliché were subverted or otherwise played with in this one.
    I like how how they sorta slowly ramp up Rom's dumbness in that first negotiation scene so that, as a fan of DS9 you go from 'Oh loveable, somewhat dim Rom, I've missed you' to 'Oh no... Are they trying to exaggerate Rom for laughs? Lower Decks no, you were doing so well!' to 'Huh. Are they doing a thing where Leeta is the power behind the throne? Or... Wait, waaaaaait, are they...?' to 'Oh my goodness, yes they are! Rom and Leeta are working as a team and having fun with it. This is great!'
    I like everything surrounding Rutherford and Tendi, because in a lesser, more cliché show they would end up together. Or end up realising that they don't want to be together. But not in Lower Decks, because Lower Decks is the most realistic Star Trek show and therefore, like in real life, they're not going to make that kind of decision based on one singular incident. And I enjoyed Rutherford's 'I love you too' and the awkwardness after, because that statement was very direct, is very obviously a truth Rutherford blurts out in the moment and yet very much doesn't answer the question 'Is the obvious chemistry between Rutherford and Tendi just platonic or not?'
    Also if you read Tendi as trans, the fact that she talks about being comfortable walking around without covering her top around her (hypothetical) husband has a whole additional layer of subtext.
    Everything surrounding Mariner is good, I loved seeing Quimp again. It was funny at the right times and serious at the right times and it moved her personal arc forward in a meaningful way.
    But also... Ransom checking up on Boimler at the end! 😍I love how the first thing he asks is whether Boimler overworked himself like he planned and whether he needs help... And how the last words of the episode are him saying 'I like that lieutenant'. Especially since I noticed earlier in the episode that Bradford is very insistent on referring to himself as a Junior Lieutenant, emphasising the _Junior_ . But Ransom consistently refers to him as just Lieutenant Boimler.

    Rom and Leeta have been my favorite use of previous characters in Lower Decks to date. It feels like more than a cameo, i like having previous characters framed as antagonists, lower decks seems to give more latitude to antagonists than to single episode allies.

      In this case, Grand Nagus Rom still gets to be the true friend of the Federation that he has been for so long, while also putting their representatives to the test to ensure the best outcome for his people…doing so in the most Ferengi way possible, by seeing how much he could scam them. Capt. Freeman out-scamming Grand Nagus Rom so effortlessly tells him everything he needs to know, that yes, the Federation CAN be trusted to respect his people and their values, even though they run counter to the UFP’s own stated values. Ferenginar can remain as it is, wholly and completely capitalistic by nature, and also enjoy the protections provided by being a UFP member world. That’s why it seals the deal so effectively…👍🏻😁

    We gave being a more traditional couple a good try for several years (we're both middle-aged, so we had a few lingering assumptions), but it was always very awkward and ill-fitting.

    I think we really need a Mariner/Miglemo episode. Where Becket finally decides to do some introspection after being called out for her self destructive behavior twice this season. Plus it might be fun to see Miglemo be good at his job. All we really have seen from him is food analogies and him being a bad mentor to Tendi. It would be fun to have an episode where we see "OH! he's actually good at this!"

    I have to admit, I prefer Tendi and Rutherford as deeply close but platonic friends, because I don't think we see that portrayed all that much. That said, with all the blushing they did, I wonder if the writers are setting up a romantic connection for them later.
    I *really* like Captain Freeman in this episode, and of course LOVED having Rom and Leeta back

    I think the Mariner stuff was good (the lead up to the bar fight was funny) but I thought she'd sort of gotten past that by now. It felt like a little step back to me. Maybe I should look at it like, "growth takes time".

    As for Mariner, I think she needs to take a look at herself because she's got some underlying issue behind her need to rebel. It's too self-destructive and if this keeps up, she's going to mess up big time.

    I admit, Rom kind of swindled me at first. I was honestly worried the comdey aspect of the show was leaning overly hard into Rom being dumb and even didn't like it, beacuse he is one of my favorite Star Trek characters. But as soon as Leeta stepped in to handle negotiations, I was like, "Oh you clever little power couple." And the whole thing basically being a test for the Federation was such a clever turn around at the end.

      I even saw the "test" as a swindle-they only asked to sign the standard forms *after* they'd signed onto bringing Qo'nos into the Federation. From where I'm sitting, they got themselves out of a horrible contract all while claiming _that was the plan all along!_

    This episode was a really fun one. Rutherford/Tendi being in their intimate platonic relationship, and them exploring the boundaries of that through their discomfort in this series of contrivances. Continuing to see this side of Mariner's cycle of self-destructive behaviour, and her growth throughout the series helping her notice her negative character traits. Rom's growth between series from being a foolish sidekick of Quark to a nuanced and prodigious engineer, to now being someone who can manipulate people to see their true intentions (and doing it so well he even tricked me into thinking the writers were regressing him into being a two-dimensional idiot).
    The only concern is with how Boimler's been handled for half of this season so far. It feels like the writers have gone all in on giving Boimler growth through the first two or three seasons, and are at the point where he just serves as comic relief for a B- or C-story. He is a great comic character, and I know as one of the main characters he has to have at least some presence every episode, but I hope this isn't a permanent thing for him.
    All in all this was a great mid-season episode, developing the world, the characters, and the ongoing mystery with the ship.

    I can't stay silent any longer! Hi, I am a huge Tendi + Boimler shipper. The problem is that Rutherford and Tendi are too similar to each other. They echo each other's strengths and weaknesses too much, which to me signals that they work better as BFFs rather than life partners. I think Tendi and Boimler compliment each other's shortfalls much better. And every scene Tendi has alone with Boimler has way more unspoken flirty tension than her scenes with Rutherford. Did you see the way she teased Boimler in front of Denty in episode 402? Also, no one can make Tendy laugh the way Boimler can. That's something special. Tendi displays a gentler sweetness towards Boimler that she doesn't show everyone else. I'm serious. Go rewatch all of the Tendi-Boimler scenes -- they've got real romantic chemistry. Team Boindi for LIFE!!

    There were, what, like 4 plot lines in this episode? And they were all awesome. We get development for Mariner and for Tendi and Rutherford. And we get to see growth from Rom and Leeta, who have clearly been influenced by Ferengi society even as they work to reform it. Like the DS9 episode, this one does a great job of moving the universe of DS9 along and getting telling a Lower Decks story. Great episode.

    Judging by the amount of lols, funniest episode. I was screaming at places. I can just so see Rom being all "Federation = good" but also "IDK about this tho we're so different, remember Jake and Nog? But we need them some bad, what do we do!" and Leeta being all "I got you babe" and "They still have to respect your culture!!!" and them coming up with this elaborate plan and I love it. I went at least three time "Yep, still a Ferengi." with a smile on my face and I love that too. Ferengi shows and commercials being basically a copy of 20th-21st century Earth felt poignant in a very satisfying way. But the crowning moment of the episode was that restaurant scene. I swear when the 'confessed' to Meglimo I had to pause and something must have happened to my brain because my first thought was "OMG ARE WE GETTING A THREESOME LOWER DECKS?! DID YOU JUST GO THERE?" And when they staged that divorce I screamed "NOOO THERE'S A SOLUTION FOR THIS, IT'S CALLED POLYAMORY, DIVORCE IS NOT NECESSARY." Yeah, you're not the only weirdo out there xDDDD This episode was an effing joy ride I loved every second of it.

    Ngl, I was holding my breath a little with the Rutherford & Tendi subplot. In my head I was like "oh dear god no, don't make them a couple." I'm on the ace spectrum and lean a little in the aromantic direction. I also have a platonic, female best friend. We've known each other for 20+ years and there's a level of intimacy and affection that exist between us that others mistakenly read as romantic. She's my soulmate and I'm hers. We're just two people who care deeply for one another.
    That is why I'm sooo glad that they veered away from pushing a romance between Rutherford and Tendi. They can be affectionate, find the other physically attractive but not have a romance evolve between them.
    SN: I believe soulmates can be platonic and you can have more than one.

    I think the episode shows that they both have romantic feelings for each other but are not ready to express them and are being pushed into the awkward situation where they have to. If they were purely platonic, pretending to be together would have posed no issue but because they have feelings which they are not prepared to explore, it starts to get too real and becomes awkward fast. It's not the audience that is walking the line, it's the characters who at this point are afraid to risk the comfort of their friendship dynamic. But since this episode goes there, it probably means that they will try to be more than friends before the end of the season.

    As for that ongoing ship thing they’ve been doing, I’ve rather enjoyed picking out patterns. The first ship to go was the Klingons, with one of them saying “he won’t be captain much longer…” hinting at some plot. Of note, they read 1 lifesign on board.
    The Romulans, of course, have two people opening plotting to usurp their commander. Of note, not only is this mystery ship hijacking and disabling systems, they detected the Romulan vessel despite it being implied they were cloaked before the scene picks up on the bridge.
    The Orions are the only crew not to have a seditious member wanting to overthrow or kill their commanding officer, but also of note they were the only ship to have pursued the mystery ship being the ones to engage, all the others were sought out by the mystery ship.
    Betazoid Monitoring Station got the Squatch-Snapshot of the mystery ship, confirmation from the ambassador and Freeman that no one has seen a ship like this before.
    Brings us to now, we have another crewmate wanting to take over and a hint that the previous examples may have similarly been in contact with the mystery ship (except the Orions). Also of note, the Ferengi had a Genesis Device onboard. Very curious what puzzle pieces we will be given next.
    As for the rest of the episode, great stuff, I personally don’t ship Tendi and Rutherford because I very rarely care to see characters become couples. Not against it, just not something I think much about. What I do care a lot about is their dynamic so this was a hilarious, dial-to-10 sitcom style nonsense.

    Sometimes I see people accusing reviews like this of "telling people what to think", personally I don't think so, and this episode of Lower Decks and your review is a prime example of why; I wasn't too keen on this episode, but hearing your points has helped me reconsider a bit. Not in a "you told me what to think" way, but in a sense that you've helped me perceive another side to the episode.
    I thought Rom was a bit flanderised into being stupid; obviously he was always kind of an idiot, but Zek chose him as his successor specifically because he noted stuff like the union episode and realised Rom had a good head on his shoulders, and I was a little afraid at times that this episode of Lower Decks didn't get that, but you brought up some points that reminded me that playing dumb was part of Rom's deliberate ploy here.
    Likewise, I do much prefer to see Rutherford and Tendi as platonic. Star Trek has often struggled a bit depicting platonic relationships, especially between male and female characters, so I like to see Rutherford and Tendi as, yes close and a bit flirty, but nonetheless a strong example of an opposite-sex platonic relationship. This episode for me, leant a bit hard into the romantic angle, so I wasn't on board with that at all, but again, hearing your side of it, and how much you appreciated it helped me to make peace with that part of the episode a bit.
    I probably won't ever love this episode of Lower Decks, but its always refreshing and interesting to hear people talk about why they like things that I don't. Its never about reviews like this telling me what to think, as some people seem to want to accuse, its about getting to hear and discuss different readings of a text rather than just sitting in an echo-chamber of people who just plain agree.

    And you know, after watching the episode again, I love the implication at the end that if the Admiral had actually just given Rom and Leeta everything they were after, Rom wouldn't have signed the agreement. It's like they said at the start of the episode, it would have been good for short trem profit, but it would have been a terrible long term arrangement joining with a group that is so easily taken advantage of. It really shows how smart Rom and Leeta are and how they do have the best in mind for the Ferengi Alliance.
    And then there's Quimp, who I adore. Not only genuine friends with a human, but a female. And clearly it's obvious he and Mariner have been friends for a long time, probably long before Rom became Nagus. So he's just the kind of progressive Ferengi that is going to thrive under Rom's leadership.
