Cover art is king! Great to hear your collector stories, you all have a similar approach. As a young man I bought SF paperbacks because I couldn't get enough of it and, predictably, they were much more affordable. But it was always cover art first, author second, subject matter third in my SF discovery days. Now, I'm an amateur collector, not dedicated at all but always keeping an eye open at local book fairs, annual town church fairs as well as visiting the local charity outlets (Salvo, Goodwill) and also the much rarer visit to a couple used book stores in my region. I grab only good-to-new condition, both hardcover and paperback, favorite authors and good cover art. If one issue of a paperback say, is more valuable than another issue of the same book, if the cover art is appealing to me on the cheaper one I'll buy that. There's nothing like the feel of a book in the hand as opposed to digital and audio books. Really enjoyed this episode of "The Collaboration". Now, I'm going to watch the first one, which I somehow missed! Carry on, gents, and, Cheers.

Thanks for watching! I too, will pass on a more valuable copy of a book if there's a cheaper copy with more appealing cover art. Cover art is what first drew me to older SF in used bookstores and i've loved older SF ever since!

This is the first (and only) Brackett I've read so far. I found the book club edition a few weeks ago in a local used book store. Since this was the next book you fellas were discussing I decided to push it to the top of the pile. I'm glad i did! Like you all, I was really impressed by the vividness of her descriptions. The Red Sea was particularly unique. I feel the same as Richard does concerning his comments about WW2. When I read older fiction, I remind myself that all fiction is a product of their times. I can imagine being in America while the war rages a world away and knowing how important this conflict is to win but not knowing how it would turn out. The one minor complaint I have (and this isn't specific to Brackett) is this eras near obsession with Psi powers. These discussion videos are great!

That is great that you read along and its great to hear your thoughts. I agree about the PSI remark and there were quite a few stories that had that element in this collection. From what I gather from more knowledgeable booktubers and viewer/commenters, it seems like John W. Campbell was pushing authors to write about the PSI thing.

Yeah that was one of Campbell's well know loves @@sfwordsofwonder

I can thoroughly recommend The Long Tomorrow, it's excellent.

Thanks for watching! I've always felt the same about Psi in this or any era of SF. Aside from really enjoying James Schmitz stuff recently which features a lot of Psi I don't often like it in my SF.

    Excellent discussion.
Aside: My essential NESFA is the complete stories of Roger Zelazny. Brilliant stuff.

I just recently read my first Zelazny and I'm hooked. I'll be looking for the NESFA of his. Thanks.

Thanks for watching! I've read several of his books but none of his short stories. I'll have to be on the lookout for that one. Nesfa Press collections are another great way to get introduced to an author though!

Like the previous video that have the three of join eachother to discuss a collection of stories, I thought this one was excellent as well. I'm currently reading a collection of Brackett stories as well but it's "The Martian Quest" which contains a very early stories from 1941 onwards, I'm enjoying that. I got it in hardcover as incidentally my method of collecting is more of a mixed bag than it seems to be the case for you guys... sometimes like with the Jim Burns' covers of Peter F. Hamilton novels, or with Alastair Reynolds novels I do enjoy to have the hardcovers...and there are a couple of more that I own... sometimes omnibus type of hardcovers like "The Martian Quest" or "Three of the Legion" by Jack Williamson that I recently acquired.

'The Martian Quest' is one I'd love to have. I believe its published by Haffner, who published most or all of her SF across 3 or 4 hardcovers. I have 'Shannoch the Last' by Haffner and would love to find the rest eventually! I do actually pickup hardcovers often, but when the chance arises to replace them with the paperback i usually do. Eventually, when i have more space i look forward to having much more hardcovers on the shelves.

@@sciencefictionreads you're correct, it is the Haffner edition of "The Martian Quest" that I got in my collection and that I'm reading now. Definitely can see why you'd want to complete that set. I also understand your argument for having more space for a more varied collection because of the paperback editions. I guess I just have a weakness for hardcovers...some of them have some nice memories for me as well as I got them signed at places like Waterstones in Nottingham or the Edinburgh Book Festival (Peter F. Hamilton, Alastair Reynolds and Stephen Baxter amongst others)

Boris Vallejo based on Brackett’s story “Enchantress of Venus”. Love it when the art accurately portrays a story in the collection.

Huzzah, Ira. It's great to know there is another NESFA Press fan out there. The Cordwainer Smith books have a special place on my bookshelf.
As for Leigh Brackett, I discovered the Ace edition of 'The Sword of Rhiannon' on the book rack at the drugstore, when I was fourteen. I've been a fan ever since. The book has all the Edgar Rice Burroughs elements along with time travel, which, on Mars, implies long journeys.
