- In this episode we talk about what it was like when we moved back to England after living in Australia for 7 years. We’ll share why we only lasted 6 months before we decided to move back to Australia.
As an expat in Australia, I know only too well how difficult it can be to live so far from home. While we miss all of the good things about home, it’s easy to forget how it can be challenging too.
When I moved back to England, due to unforeseen circumstances, it just didn’t work out for us and ultimately while I tried to re-create my old life, I realised I had moved on and that Australia had changed me.
If you’re moving from UK to Australia or thinking about moving from Australia to London for example, find out what made us move back to Australia within just 6 months.
We’ll also talk about what it was like trying to find a house and job, and of course the dreaded commute to work. We’ll also talk about things we had missed about England but also seeing Australia totally differently.
We also talk about how Annie went back just 9 months later to visit a friend in England after moving back to Australia again and realised so much about how it might be better to live in Australia and visit UK going forward.
But how does Annie feel now? Find out what she would do different if we were to do it all again.

I did that Brighton to London commute for 7 months before I couldnt take it any more, I know people who had done it for decades. Crazy.
Great podcast . I hope you are both enjoying life here in Australia .You are both a lovely couple .
Thank you so much for such a lovely comment! We LOVE Australia!
I live in Perth, Australia, moving back to Scotland, having just been back, no issues with public transport at all. I went on it often and took a train to Fort William from Edinburgh Though I must say when I was in London which was only once 30 years ago, I couldnt believe how rude people were on the train in London. Thats a whole other ballgame. My son is treated terriblby here in Perth at work. No need at all for that anywhere. I cant afford a house here as the prices are terrible now and the rental market is just as bad if not worse. There's great thing about both countries and terrible things too. My aircon has been on 24?7 for months. It's been a very long hot summer. The heat is as bad as the freezing cold. in a different way. You can't take your dog anywhere here, This is for anyone thingking the grass is greener here and its simply not. I can understand your heart being in England. I hope you've settled well again here and have no regrets. I really enjoyed your podcast. Its great to see someone else's perspective who has tried to go back. Maybe the fact that I have a huge great family to go home to really helps and they're all doing so well and is a major draw card, other than Bonny Scotland.itself! They are two completely different cultures I've met both amazingly lovely people here and very nasty abusive ones too.. I've lived here for 19 years, Ive enjoyed the beach and pool etc, but a tree change, mountains and old building are much more apealing to me now at 52. No regrets either way. I work in aged care and I'm a hairdresser to trade, so no issues with local work. I think Its great that you're open to all kinds of options on your journey. I can completely relate. All the best! You seem like a great team. 😊
Gosh watching this as we prepare to move out of Brighton back to my hometown in order to save up for a move all the way over to Australia in a year or two!
Brighton is not what it was. We cant wait to move now. Its not for families.
Thanks so much for watching! Brighton has changed a lot hasn't it? Good luck with the move, it will be worth it in the end! Do you have ideas on where you want to move to in Aus?
Thank you, fingers and toes crossed! To be honest all of Australia looks exciting but I am really drawn to NSW. On a more practical basis though Victoria may be a more viable option for skills and visas. I guess we will see! Thanks for your really useful videos and podcasts in the meantime. 😀
You moved back to the UK from Australia ! 🤪
Britain is a great place if you are wealthy, if you are at the bottom of the ladder not so good especially now after the good times which are not coming back. I moved to Australia and there are many problems ( the heat for one) but people are a better off here, although affording a house is a challenge now since inflation kicked in and there is a dire shortage at present. If you are a couple with good jobs and are careful you can build a new 4 bedroom 2 bathroom, two car garage beautiful modern home with modern appliances.
We've been living in Australia for 5 years but cant afford to buy a house in Melbourne. My wife thinks we should move back to UK and prices much cheaper. Furthermore, the flight costs to come back to UK to visit family with kids is too much. My gut says coming back to UK is a bad idea though, but I dont want to stop my kids getting to know their families.
I think everyone is struggling at trying to buy a house right now - we certainly are too! UK has just gone into a recession so it's not going to look good there, but I totally understand how hard it is being away from family. Could your family ever come out to Australia to see you? Like you alternate it each year? I always feel like it's always on us to go back, but people won't come out to visit as much as we'd hope.
seems UK house prices in Southern England are far higher than those in Australia. You'll need to go north, maybe Manchester or further.
Move back while you still can especially if you’re both British. My wife is Australian so it was never really an option for me. Family will never come and visit you here. My mother used to come over alone and now she has dementia in a nursing home. I will forever feel guilty for all the lost years I never saw her (20+ years) And now my kids are grown and have their own lives here it’s not an option. I have missed so much with my family over there.
People who think UK is more affordable than Australia would be in for a big surprise. Not until I went overseas last months that I realise our complain about pricing in Australia is nothing compared to other countries. Prices of everything increases everywhere, some are worse than Australia.
There is more to Australia than beach and sunshine.
Absolutely!
Expat, making immigrant sound a bit more appealing 🦘
Only Pommes are expats. Invaders sounds too not P.C.
UK cities much dirtier and littered than those in OZ
I noticed that too when I go back to England for visits.
