God I love Mk1 Ford Kas. I mean sure, over here in the UK you can get better stuff than a Ka, but I love the little things. Good for a cheap car, and good in the economic crisis we're going through. The Mk2s though, yeah I don't talk about the Mk2s.

I have one so I can help. For starters it's very cheap to buy. It's quite good on fuel if you drive it normally too. The interior is good and simple for a car this small.
The best part of the Ford Ka is the handling. It's very very good. I have raced people in more powerful cars on twisty roads and they couldn't get away from me.
There's 3 engines available. The Ka's made between 1996 and 2002 had the 1.3 Endura-E OHV. It's a very very old engine design, but if you remember to adjust the valve clearance every so often it won't let you down. From 2002 to the end of production in 2008 Ford changed the Endura for the 1.3 Duratec Rocam 8V SOHC. It's a much better, more modern engine that is smoother, quieter and more powerful.
The last engine was the 1.6 8V Rocam, but that was only available in the SportKa version. I haven't driven the SportKa so I can't say much.
The main thing to look for is rust. Main areas are around the fuel filler cap, rear wiper and the underbody. Rust on the exhaust is normal for any car.
