  • Garlic can make any dish a little (or a lot) better, but you really have to get the fresh stuff. Sure, it takes more work to chop it up yourself than it does to buy a jar of minced garlic, but it’s worth it. Garlic from a jar has a weird taste and consistency that won’t work in most dishes, and there are all kinds of tricks to get better at using fresh garlic. There are some things that it’s fine to buy in a jar, but this is not one of them, so let’s take a look at why you should never use minced garlic from a jar.

I was once used jarred garlic RELIGIOUSLY for 2 reasons. 1! To avoiding cutting my fingers! 2! To save time cooking! Once I've gotten older I lost my taste for the garlic in a jar over time. Now I have to get back into the groove of using fresh garlic again. It may be time-consuming to slice but it's worth it in the end!

I'm spoiled. I live near a major California garlic growing area. But anywhere in the US has our beautiful garlic shipped to them and it keeps for such a long time. No need to rush to do anything to preserve it.
I tried the stuff in a jar and dumped it. It just wasn't for me, but I can see it being okay if people want the convenience.
If people don't want garlic on their hands, well fitting gloves are an option.

Did she just say that it is expensive? You can literally find a decent sized jar at dollar tree for a buck. That's like a third of the price of fresh garlic at least. As for flavor, it is going to be much weaker than if you minced it fresh, so you are going to need to use like two to three times the amount for the same effect. That being said, if you are just cooking for yourself or your family than this is a great alternative. If you are having guests over or cooking for some sort or occasion maybe splurge and get the real thing, because although flavor wise their isn't going to be a huge difference, it will look kind of messy if you have to use a ton of this jarred garlic in a dish!

It's a not true that minced garlic is less flavorful than cloved garlic. Jarred Minced Garlic is actually better in my opinion because it blends better with the dish anyway. Oddly enough as well you actually pay less for more garlic if you buy it from the jar. Plus you save time instead of trying to cut it. Imagine how much easier is it to get a 3 spoon fulls of freshly minced garlic in 10 seconds, Vs. 10-15 Minutes of trying and failing to peel and cut every clove.

Fresh garlic is obviously preferable in a garlic forward item such as garlic bread. I do recommend looking for jarred brands that don’t have artificial preservatives (the kind I have is just garlic, water, and citric acid).
