Bennett RR: "How We" Series: Model a Grassy Field

  • This is the second video in our "How We" series- we won't call it "How To", as it is simply the method we used for this task. Many other methods and options are available. We will show actual hands on work so you can see exactly what we did. Thus the videos may not be cinematic works of art, and may be a bit long and tedious depending on the task!
This LONG (2 hours!!) video shows the making of a small grassy field. This was done somewhat as a self-test. I had a couple scrap pieces of teddy bear fur and decided to see if they could be used. So I grabbed the camera, glued them down, and went to work!
Here are the main materials used for this field:
-Left over "test" pieces of teddy bear fur, from when the larger TBF field was done
-Vallejo #26.218 "Dark Earth" Acylic Earth Texture
-Monster Model Works "Diorama Dirt", sifted into Fine and Super Fine grades
-Scenic Express SE0403, "Fine Natural Soil & Dirt"
    -Woodland Scenics #1344 "Burnt Grass"
-Woodland Scenics #1342 "Earth Fine Turf"
Railroad "Dirt" accumulated from along the real RR!
-Silflor #713-23 Late Summer Cattle Pasture (scrap pieces)
-Silflor #711-23 4mm Late Summer Lawn (scrap pieces)
    -Heki #1686 CelluLeaf, medium green
    -Heki #1690 CelluLeaf, leaf litter
    -Treemendous "Fine Oak Scatter"
    -Treemendous "Fine Pine Scatter"
-Heki #1855 Wild Grass Fiber XL, Meadow Green
-Heki #1858 Wild Grass Fiber XL, Mountain Meadow
    -Polak #5976 flowers, white
    -Polak #5985 flowers, white-violet
    -Heki Flor #1551, medium green
-Polak #9104 Low Bushes, medium green
-Polak #9224 High Bushes, medium green
-Polak #5908 Wild Bushes, Brombeeren (for weeds)
-Silflor #200-13 Filigee Bushes (many other choices available)
Getting the Polak, Treemendous and Silflor Filigee Bushes is more difficult, but I like these products. I ordered the Polak items from a shop in Germany, Treemendous items from their online shop and Scenic Express special ordered the Filigree Bushes for me from MiniNatur in Germany.

You have turned me onto the most beautiful place to want to model. I went to the Google Maps of Lake City, Pennsylvania and found the exact field that You are showing in this video. I really like places like this, that are sparse, but yet most interesting and offer a challenge. Those old buildings up the line would be great to model, especially the old corrugated metal rust bucket. It looks like an old foundry. I also really love the pink brick building with the arched windows by the old grain elevator. I think one could do an entire section of a layout just modeling this stretch of track and the old siding. That old track reappears from the grass way down the line, close to the next crossing. Thanks for showing me this gem of an area. I was through Erie the end of May this year on Amtrak, heading to Buffalo, Albany and New York City.

some times I start watching your how we videos and think you have fallen off a rocking chair. but watching, and learning, you do amazing work with things that the average modeler would never think of. I just want to say thank you. for taking the time to film, edit, and put out all these videos. you do the community a great service

Both Sjh Hartford and Wayne M nailed it on the head, your work is beyond anything I have seen before and no the videos are not to long. Like others, I get more out of a full length so I get to see all that went on with the project. It's worth the time if you want your railroad to take on the look and feel of the real thing!!! Watched the "How-We Ballast" went home and started ballasting, WOW it simpler now and looks real slick. Got a ways to go before scenery, but got a "How-We" to help me along with that phase of the layout. I can't thank you enough for these videos, keep them coming!! Much appreciated and Much Respect!! Truly honored to be a subscriber!!! Looking forward to more Stephen D. Muse

Please do so!! I really have learned and enjoyed them at the same time. I can't/or won't try to speak for other's but this has been one of the best little series I have found to watch and learn from right along with Tom from Tom's Trains and Things and Kathy Mallet!!

Absolutely fantastic! I like when you speed up the repetitive parts and add the music - nice touch. Here are my random thoughts on what I have learned from watching you work. If you want high quality scenery, you must spend the time to do it right. Layer-on-layer is the secret to blending dissimilar colors and materials. I have heard and read about “texture” and “layers”, but seeing you do it in real time has driven it home for me - now it all makes sense. Early in the video I was wondering how the heck you were going to blend the very different shades (or tones) of green you started with (e.g., the light yellowish-green teddy bear fur with the darker green scenery materials). Later in the video you showed how you do it, and the final result is very natural looking. I always knew that the key to realistic scenery is to use a wide variety of materials, but I never understood the order to do things in, nor what thought process went into it. Now, after watching you transition that scene from bare plywood to a realistic scene, I feel confident to try it myself. And especially hearing you think out-loud as you work helps me to understand the reasoning behind every action. You are to model railroad scenery as Bob Ross was to painting landscapes. It is fun for me to watch a master at work. Thank you, and keep it up.

    • @robbennett1965
      @robbennett1965 7 років тому +1

Thanks Jack, and you summed it up very well. One other item I have learned- scenery is VERTICAL. Too often one sees horizontal scenery such as clump foliage used for bushes. Careful looking at the real world will show how vertical things are- underbrush, weeds, grass, bushes, etc. And I loved watching Bob Ross! That is a blast from the past!

Amazing! Now the real challenge, if you're up for it, is incorporating realism to the main lines which seem antiseptic and sterile next to the highly detailed and weathered spur. Prototypical main lines have growth in between them. That's a huge challenge I know

Wow, another great "How We" video! It was amazing to watch you take those two patches of fur that you weren't happy with and bring them to life. You are an artist in 3rd. Thank you for the inspiration and for all the other things you bring to the hobby.

I just gotta say, man, the more ya did the better it looked. I couldn't believe the end result from the beginning of the video. Thanks for posting. I did fast forward a few times, LOL. Ya need to work on the other side of the main lines. To the left of the electrical box I would suggest you make a mud puddle. And I'd keep that building. It looks fantastic with the old weathered box car.

Great video Rob. just brilliant use of a variety of materials. I suppose the real trick is to know when to stop. I'm looking forward to getting to this stage on my layout. I'm still at the track laying stage and building some structures. I don't think the video is too long. It shows the process in real time and includes a lot of detail that would be missed if shortened. I'm in Sydney Australia so youtube really is a global tool. Thanks for sharing. Keep up the great work.

Watching this and hearing the 'Ideas as I go' method of building a scene up the question of divisions comes to mind, I had this with a layout I built a few years back for a friend and came across the problem of filling an area with no obvious way of dividing it from other areas, What I came up with came from the depressed industrial state in our area, Lot's of semi-derelict industrial sites that had once had rail links and as such had acquired a supply of sleepers, 'Ties' to you, which had been used to build fences using the rails as vertical and horizontal supports, very effective dividers to scene fillers.

Stephen, watched your latest video with my wife this morning. She commented that she'd love to see some of the other scenic area's of your layout. I was thinking, instead of going back to find other videos, a "drive by" of others completed areas might be a great way to end your episodes. Just a suggestion. I've followed from the beginning. Rob, I know you are a fan of the European layouts for the level of realism and attention to detail they lavish upon their layouts. The Germans in particular are very good at this.
But there is one British layout that I think trumps(excuse my language) them all. It is the Hope Diamond of railroad layouts.
If you do not already know about it, I highly, HIGHLY recommend checking out the Pendon Model Railway Museum.

Couldn't you have just put all the matting down first then done the dirt to blend it all together? It would have some time and materials coz you wouldn't be going back over what you have already done.
