Ied say that worked pretty stellar the home built system as usually I see guys doing it one board at a time Im guessing you got a pretty big motor on your saw to but I could be wrong n sharp milling chains wow that worked slick as in smarter not harder! But thats coming from a guy where the state tree is a telephone pole.

Thank you for this! Have similar projects going, this helps a lot! Also have a 2500# winch... but only a 500# battery.😉
And yeah, their estimate is VERY optimistic. (Also calling it a winch rather than a hoist let’s them pad those #s even higher.)

After your gold claim video, this is my favorite. Was really fun to follow your thought process as you improved your lifting winch. You be veddy clebbah man! Loved the variety of angles and good explanations. You should hire your dog - seems very diligent.
Be safe out there! Oh yeah - was it around 18:30 when your truck’s tail lights started blinking? Was your dog pressing the brake pedal for you? 😄

I'm glad you enjoyed it, and thank you very much for your support and the compliments. I hadn't noticed the brake lights but I'm not surprised. Boy likes to lounge on the seat, but Scout likes to lounge on the drivers side floor. They've even locked me out a couple times, but I can just slide open the rear window from the outside.

I gave you another like here. I really liked this video because it showed a winch in action with both the mill and the edge mill. I have been weighing buying a bandsaw mill vs a chainsaw mill. Up until this video I was leaning toward the bandsaw mill. However I want a good bandsaw for my woodworking shop and would prefer to put the money into that. I have a good Stihl with a 28" bar on it that I love so I figured for the amount of milling that I would want to do that the Alaskan mill would suffice. The more videos I watched about the Alaskan mill the more I noticed people complaining about the fatigue it was causing. Alaskan offers their own winch system for the horizontal mill but not for the vertical. When I watched this video and saw how you had set up the vertical mill with this rail system and the winch I thought that you had created the most flexible system out there. What are your thoughts? Am I on the right track?

First of all, thank you for the like. Yes you are on track, I have created the best winch and rail system of all time. Not like I would ever toot my own horn of course. Granberg wasn't interested in my idea. Paraphrasing, they said they are aware that their edging mill rail system sort of sucks, but they were in the process of developing a new one. I'll bet it won't be as good as mine, but anyone can build one like I made. With the Alaskan mill and a 28 inch bar you will be able to cut pieces that are 21 inches wide. Wider logs will need to be sort of edged first on one side, or at least some freehand chaninsawing to get the log narrower. It's sort of important to have a powerful saw, but I was using a 70cc if memory serves, and it did pretty well. I've almost got my portable band saw mill set up, and I expect it will be 15 times faster, or so, than the Alaskan mill. As to which to buy, that's something you'll have to decide for yourself after weighing the options. Alaskan milling isn't really too hard of work if you have a winch on it, and you could likely do it all day. But if you have a power feed and a log loader on a band saw mill, the hardest work of course is dealing with the lumber and scraps after they're cut. If I were only doing something like 10 or 20 or even 30 logs per year, I would probably put my money into my wood shop instead of into a band saw mill. Get some nice equipment for your wood shop would be my advice, and just use the Alaskan mill and an edging mill, but don't skimp on putting money into those mills or it will make things harder for you. Just my 2 cents, since you asked. Good luck, keep us updated.

Also, you will likely have to put an improvised winch on the Granberg Alaskan mill, since none are available from Granberg (or anywhere else) even though they advertise them. At least there were none a few months ago. Not a big deal though, just watch a couple videos, or just mine. It's pretty easy.
