Most minimalists seem to wind up with a plain black and white wardrobe. So dull and they quickly start looking deprived and unhappy. I did the opposite. I made a minimal wardrobe of happy, Lilly Pulitzer prints. Each one make me happy and amazingly no one notices how often I wear them. Since Lilly makes classic styles, you can wear them for years and never look dated.
Monique Lehnhardt same here!!!!I love color and it’s required that I stand out at my job as a customer service rep especially since my employer does not provide a uniform. I choose the challenge of 33 items so that like Joshua stated they are all items that are my favorites and can be mixed up together. I respect the black white group of people as well as the “personal uniforms” and understand this thought process. For me I love to express myself in color and it makes me feel good yet my clothing doesn’t control my life or burdens me with laundry care, organization etc. I feel like I can shop my closet every day and have unlimited combinations. I also have the one in one out rule and shop 2nd hand. Feels good to have an ally with this concept here with you!
disappointed. Agree the minimalist attitude of I have 1 black shirt 1black pair of shorts and a black laptop.I sit in my no furniture living room that has 1 plant and oh yes I own a black laptop. YUCK!!!! So pretentious and arrogant. It's like The less I have means I'm better than you! I love color! My wardrobe is NOT going to be all white black and gray! Nor will it be white black and tan!
Joshua, it is a fact that having less clothes are better in many aspects. When my mother died three years ago I was wearing my black Tshirts during two or three months. I noticed that it was quite easier to get ready in the morning because there were just 3 or 4 tshirts to choose. I've reduced my wardrobe considerably since then. I suggest everybody should try. Success to you. Irene from Brazil
It's been many moons since I've shopped for clothes. I will wait for the right ones before I purchase. Clothes are not substantial like they were decades ago.
Due to a dramatic weight loss, I had to basically donate all my clothes and get new. Just got the basics and it's great. The only thing I allowed myself above the basics is some great funny t-shirts and two sports shirts.
I never knew what it was until recently but decision fatigue was really getting in my way. I decided one thing I could cut back on was time preparing and deciding on clothing. I work in a very busy office so I have about ten of the same pants, twelve of the same shirts in different colors, and about eight same button down sweaters in different colors since it’s cold inside. It’s been life changing to not think about what to wear all the time.
Also, purchasing clothes made out of natural fibers...cotton, linen, bamboo, silk, wool...are better for the environment, they will decompose when they have to be discarded. For me, I just like dealing with less choices in my closet. As you say, everything that I now have is my favorite. I used to own others that I disliked, but felt "obligated or guilty" for not wearing them. More freedom!
Love your videos--well spoken and very common sense. For years my husband and I have traveled with only our carry ons. Being lighter is so much more freeing!
New subscriber, enjoying your videos. I agree with the concept of buying better quality. I wish you had mentioned buying ethically made, fair wage made items. How can you feel comfortable if you know you are wearing an item on the backs of workers who can barely survive and live in abject poverty? Unless consumers demand clothing that has been ethically sourced, even our minimal purchases contribute to this cycle.
I also live where there are 4 strong seasons. Consider having 2 small wardrobes: one for cool/cold weather and one for warm/hot weather. Some pieces (like tee shirts, cardigans) might be good for all seasons. I just packed away big winter boots, hats, scarves, really wooly sweaters, etc. and brought out the capris and lighter dresses for summer.
I just donated hubby’s shoes that he wore in snow (We move back to Southern California six years ago). DSW gives you points toward discounts. I’m switching from regular socks to compression socks, so I was able to get money toward a free pair of compression socks. It is hard though to donate all of those pretty socks that I bought last year before starting compression socks!
💯 One caveat to quality (I agree) is if those few go to items that look beat up but are comfy on bad days. Also take care of your things (stuff). I wash all clothes (except underwear on hot as advised by microbiologists) in Coldwater and hang dry or use extra low heat setting for longer. Learn how to sew for small fixes and treat small stains with hydrogen/baking soda paste (sit for 30 min) or Tide Pen if out. Most consumer goods incl clothes since being made overseas by cheap often exploited labor are now very cheap and disposable. There’s much less incentive to take care of things (stuff) and make them last. When we feel less then we buy/eat/do more then. It’s an illusion but makes Big Corp Trillions worldwide. They use proven psychological techniques to market/sell incl social media/YT and celebrities. Find ways to feel good about yourself independent of what you wear/own/do. You are enough as you are.
Ive noticed my uniform is comfy pants, a v neck t-shirt and a 3rd layer, cardi or overshirt. Smart casual. Starting to get rid of the excess and stop buying cheap and fast fashion. Great tip with fewer colours too so everything goes together.
Hey guys! Just wanted to let you know that my new book, Things That Matter, is finally here. I put my heart into it, and I can’t wait to share it with you. You can pick up a copy at www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/676394/things-that-matter-by-joshua-becker/
Decluttering clothes amd listening to mu UA-cam minimalist friends. 🎉😊😊 I had a successful no buy year in regard to clothes (which spilled to all other areas of my life, so I stopped buying everything except food and occasionally makeup) and I realised that I still have so much clothes that I dont need. I got to know myself better, what I wear, what I dont wear etc. I think I will declutter around 1/3...
The last tip is the only one that I will disagree with. I prefer to start from the position of 'I'm getting rid off ALL of this...which one's will I wish I had kept?' rather than forcing myself to choose who gets the 'curb treatment'. I prefer to choose who to keep, but that'a Konmari methodology so to each their own. As long as you end the day with less shit...its a win.
Great message for the Planet too 🌍💚🙏- so many deisel powered cargo ships carrying short trend fashion - We have consciously chosen BUY NO WHITE clothing as a minimising step - applied it to opting for grey / pastel bedsheets too - moved to turkish style towels in blue - its GREAT not having to do a seperate whites wash to minimise laundry (more playtime ☺ )plus No initial chlorine release from making our fabrics white and no ongoing chlorine or brightening chemicals during our laundry routine
Hey Josh. I'm a serious minimalist when it comes to material things, but I'm trying to own less clothing. As a woman, we believe we have to have tons of clothing. Not so true. I'm glad I saw this video. It's an answer to o my prayer lol. Now, I'm gonna get started on decluttering my closet. Thanks.
I love the content and the quality of your videos, very organised, clean (it's probably the lighting and the soothing colour of the backgrounds you use).
I dont think it was his intentions, but he is speaking at a great pace for deaf or hard of hear people to read the close captions without mistakes, which I appreciate.
Give antibacterial fabrics a change though, for underwear and shirts especially. You may dare to wear the same polo over two days (well, put it into the closet on a coat hanger, just in order not to do wear it two days in a row :P), maybe air it a little, but often even that isn't necessary, while antibacterial underwear is an easy, convenient, and not least crisis proof hand wash.
My son and I both have to wear a uniform everyday, this does not reduce washing because I still have to wash all our uniforms at the end of each week and his usually in the middle of the week as well. You still need to wear sleep wear and workout wear everyday and while I agree there are many benefits to reducing how many clothes you own I don’t think washing is a reason. You still wear clothes everyday so you have the same amount of clothes to wash.
Katy McDonald Actually... people who own tons of clothes don’t have to be disciplined to wash weekly, or every few days. This results in mountains of laundry 🧺 🧺 🧺 🧺 🧺 🧺 🧺 . If you own fewer clothes it’s fewer loads.
That is part of throwing away clothing, sadly. Huge amounts of donated clothing (to charities etc) goes to landfill. The only way to keep things out of landfill is to buy less. Even IF an individual in need gets the clothes, they will still end up in landfill one day eventually :(
@@ShiaGirl18 yep, 100%. And it's been incredibly relieving. Helps me know what to wear every day with more ease. And I shop WAY less. I love the "A Small Wardrobe" account here on YT. Her processes have helped me a lot!
@@amylandry I agree. I find that it's easier to dress for work because I have colours for different colours that can easily match. I'll check out the UA-camr you mentioned.
I decided to take out all of my tee shirts one night. I had twenty (!). I kept six. I brought the rest to work for a friend who could use them, and who they would fit. She’ll pass on what doesn’t work for her.
How to know if I own too much? I have a wardrobe and I look at each one and I love each one and each one is necessary in my opinion. I don’t wear them every day and it is far from being minimal but it isn’t clutter in my opinion. What do you think? And when I look at my clothing I think they r almost high quality and hence I don’t feel the need to buy anything too.
You featured a picture of David Bowie❤️;he was NOT a clothing minimalist!😆He often wore a variety of neon colors in dresses and pants during different eras of his career
This kind of videos confuses me. Most of the people say that you need to rotate your pants and outwear almost daily. Also, they say that shoes must be rotated daily from many hygiene, health and lifespan of material reasons. The tops of course need to be changed daily especially if you sweat a lot, do many activities and so on. Please let me know how could somebody follow these advices with only few clothing items? Is it ok to go to work in the same pants, same shoes and same outwear Monday-Friday?
I could have four to five pair of shoes. As a woman. I would have my walking shoes, sandals for hot days or the beach, high heels that are comfortable and go with anything, comfortable scuff type shoes slip on or lace up smart casual, and a pair of smart boots for colder weather. In addition I may have some uggs or slippers too.
I have now Wacth a few of your video. And made myself a few notes thanks. This is the hardest because I have a lot of nice clothes. But am going to the the 3 to 6 month thing. I think that will work beaiutfuly. My size in clothes is a thing for me. JUST thought of this I could pack those away for now. I have 4 closets full of clothes on for each season. And to different one for dresses. Am in need of this so so much🙏
I could see a guy owning fewer clothes and looking great every day in jeans and a T-shirt. But with women I think clothes mean a lot more and it would be hard to minimalize how many clothes we have. Wearing the same thing every day would probably bring a lot of ridicule from our coworkers and friends. But the idea intrigues me. What do you recommend a woman to do? Does your wife wear the same thing every day? I would really appreciate your advice because I have great respect for your opinion and your recommendations. The other problem with wearing the same thing every day or at least minimizing how many clothes we have is the fact that my weight fluctuates and I’m always going up and down. I have clothes in many different sizes. What to do?
I think donate the clothes you never wear, there must be some. Keep just as many clothes as you think you need to switch up your wardrobe often enough and for weight changes.
Other people really don't notice what we wear as much as we think they do! The idea is to look good. Look your best. You should wear your clothes, they shouldn't wear you. If they stick out as an item, they are wearing you. We need to focus on the total whole look. Like "You look wonderful today." vs "I like that dress."
I own literally 77 pieces of clothing. black and white skirts and soft pink or black shirts or sweaters, even my sicks and underwear fall into those colours! I got rid of 10 garbage bags full of clothes!
We are fortunate enough to have a washing machine so we can own fewer clothes. And the "favorite" consept i have thought of myself and follow it. I always say : an item is there to work FOR me: so I need my thi gs to all be favorites❤️😊
Average = 2k?!! A year?! That actually made me exclaim out loud a WOW of disbelief. No wonder I struggle to further down size my four drawers and half a wardrobe of clothing. I'm already at the majority's finishing point!
Woah I only spend a few hundred dollars on cloths each year. Maybe $100 on shoes. My mom was always bad about buying new clothing and shoes and was really frugal and I don’t replace stuff until they get messed up. I wear a camisole which has so many holes but bc no one can see it, I just keep wearing it lol
I dont know what you do when you are not standing here talking to me ,but l need clothes to leave the house in. Clothes to sit or clean in the house or yard Clothes for filthy jobs to throw out when done Clothes to sit and relax in, on furniture after bathing
You're preaching to the choir brother. I have been doing this for over a decade and I'll never go back. P.S. I don't give a shit what people think, so if you do, you may struggle with this. If that is you I suggest, you leave your comfort zone and live life not caring what others thing. For instance, please note this is not a brag. I'm a personal finance and investing junkie and I reached millionaire status with zero debt in my life. However, I drive a pretty crappy looking car that runs great. People in my family and friends wonder why and some people think I must be struggling with finances because of that. Again, I don't give a shit and that is so fucking empowering I can't tell you. P.S. If I desired a new car I would buy one, but I don't. I get a charge out of seeing how long my 12 year old black beauty could last and I know this is weird, but I love the look of a worn car and even I think that is weird, but again, I don't care what others think!!! If you think I am pounding that point home I am because it took me years to feel this way and man I suggest you do whatever you have to to make this shift because it is awesome!! Thanks for listening. Not caring doesn't not mean you don't care about people, it means if negative people enter your space and try to convince you on how to live your life, you don't need to listen.
Joshua I'm confused! I've found this book, Living with Less, and it says your the author but it's not listed on your website. What's the situation there? Or is it geared more towards teens?
Yes Seth, you are correct. Living with Less is a book I wrote for teenagers-specifically Christian teenagers involved in a church setting. For that reason (because it’s a pretty small niche), I don’t list the book on Becoming Minimalist. I let the publisher get the word out specifically to those audiences because they do it better than me.
What to do when you have work clothes and you would not wear them any where else same with church clothes and that one really special out fit that's needed not only for a special fun occasion but for a wedding or funeral? Then there is your clothes you want to wear everyday not work clothes?
Church clothes. I thought people go to church to worship. There is no rule one needs church clothes. Or has it turned into a church fashion parade as well as worshipping. I question this
church clothes just means that you dedicate a clothing for that purpose , it doesn t mean it has to be fashion or anything , it's like for a wedding day , you just choose to make the day special and that s all there is to it
@@andoniaina8676 In Switzerland few people dress up for church. Most wear well cut dark jeans with a smart top or shirt /blouse and blazer. This also goes for the ballet/concerts/operas. Unless it is an opening night then it is black/grey and white. Same for corporate dressing banks or.... Nowadays anyway fewer people go to church. More believe it is better to be a good sincere and honest person. To also be kind and helpful. One does not need to go to church to learn these things.
2k a year per family for clothing - that is not much! If you buy good quality clothing it is going to cost much more than 2k per person a year let alone a family...
Clothing in landfill is a true problem. Please research where you can donate or send your clothing items to before simply trashing them. Places like LEVI will take ANY brand of jeans in store regardless of condition. You can also repurpose many materials for cotton rags, denim dog toys or gift bags.
2,000 a year? Is that all? Some people spend that in a month! To want to do something is the way to do everything. I want to diet, not I should, I want to exercise etc....that makes it appear a pleasure rather than a burden or obligation.
As a woman I found ‘Minimalist Mom’ videos very helpful. She suggests picking out your favourite clothes, say 5 casual tops, five smarter tops, 5 jeans etc. Donate any clothes you are sure you won’t wear again, and put anything you are not sure about in a box and store for a period. If you don’t miss it, it can go. As she says, we all have a capsule wardrobe, but it’s hidden under everything we never wear!
@@nicolabenson1155 I saw this and its helpful if you live in a place with defined seasons. Here in Scotland we can have three seasons in one week and wear a sundress one day and need a heavy sweater the next. In winter we can have 50f one day and 23F the next. I have quite a large closet so I’m thinking of doing 3 seasons clothes in different areas and using each section according to the weather that day...although by lunchtime the season could have changed twice
I agree, especially on ‘going out’ or ‘dressing up’ men suit, shirt tie, shoes done. Women ahhh.... and we do get judged, if we wear the same outfit to every event...especially by women! Sad but true! 😢
I’m minimizing a lot of things, but clothes is one category that I won’t do. I love mixing it up everyday and playing with colors. I’ve actually added a bar to my closet to separate tops and bottoms, but... they all fit comfortably in my closet. It’s not overwhelming. I also shop at a local charity shop that supports a woman’s shelter, where you can donate clothes to as well. I’m usually dressed up every day of the week, with church, school, and work, but relax in leggings in the evening. I also live in an area where I can experience all four seasons within a week. To me, picking out a colorful vibrant outfit the night before is relaxing. I’ve tried to minimize my wardrobe many times and was never happy.
It's a lot easier for guys. I cut my travel bag from 15kg to 8kg some years ago to save money as a digital nomad and I honestly don't notice a big difference as long as I stay in countries where I don't need to wear a winter jacket or thick sweaters like Scandinavia, Korea or Canada.
thank you for your perspective. we have a lot of weird weather here too esp during spring and winter so I can't say I don't understand. but my clothes are indeed overwhelming me. I have too many t shirts and I like all of them and I don't know what to do lol
1.decide today 2.quality over quantity 3.own just your favorite things 4.fewer colors 5.personal style 6.set the amount Thanks ,your tips is so minimalis too.
Joshua Becker Thanks for the encouragement. What you said about your kid wanting to play but your stuff was in the way, that hit home. You’ve been a major catalyst, so thank you.
I own a lot of clothing. I buy a lot but also due to the fact that my size is still roughly the same after 20 years (I am 41 years old now) and I hardly ever throw clothing away. I have always bought cotton, linnen and wool and kind of timeless items so now my closets are exploding. My 2019 challenge is to not buy anymore but to enjoy what I have which is plenty. Thanks for the video!
I've chosen to have a uniform wardrobe. Two pairs of high quality blue jeans, 5 black Jockey Vneck shirts, a brown leather jacket, a few pairs of high end underwear, two pairs of brown leather boots (one i got from a recycling bin that was a 90s boots but still so relevant). I don't wear belts or other accessories. Just that. And life and laundry got easier
Tip: Men tend to be either a black/grey or a brown/tan depending on their complexion/hair. By deciding which one you are and sticking to that colour palate, you will have a more coordinated wardrobe, will find it easier to shop, and will portray a more stylish overall appearance.
@@helenaville5939I dont think this applies to just males. I am female, and I have limited most of my wardrobe to black/grey. I do have color in my dressy clothes. But my everyday wardrobe? Black and grey tops, black stretch pants or dark blue jeans. Its easy. It all matches. It takes me 2min to get dressed now.
Only thing about having a really small amount of clothes is they wear out quicker as your wearing them more often & you can run out of stuff to wear if it is all in the washing. So you would have to do your washing more often so you don't run out.
1. Be poor 2. Wear the same clothes for years until they literally fall apart, sometimes when they're on you 3. Don't have any money to replace them That's how I went about having fewer clothes, although I can't say it's a method i'd recommend ideally.
Mrs Aye' hi...I discovered the formula while curating my lifestyle, actually. I created a 'uniform' for my outside activities (like work, and my work generally requires casual clothing btw except for special events) and home activities (lousy everything) and the in betweens (e.g. just go 8 buildings away quickly to grab some groceries). From that pattern, I curated which pieces match each activity. I also tried to focused on what I enjoy wearing, not the ones I wear only to impress people. ☺️
@@mrsaye499 For me I have narrowed it down over time. I am currently at 27 items. It is still a lot for me but I will wear them out and reconsider a new number over the next year.
At workplace don't we need to wear clothes without repeating them often? I have 30 different workwear to last 45 days without repeating. How do you manage at workplace with fewer set of clothes
1.Decide that you want to own less 2.Quality over quantity 3.Embrace the idea of keeping one favorite item 4.Wear fewer colours 5.Be happy and content and embrace your personal style
Hi Joshua. New subscriber. Just starting this journey. I couldnt shut my wardrobe doors it was so full. Managed to discard 23 items this morning. I hope I get better at it, I "ummed and aaghed a bit" over a few things. The indecision kills me. Does it get easier? 🇦🇺✔🙂
Yes, it does. I wear absolutely everything in my closet 95% of the time and I notice if don't or I am just tired of it, out it goes. Eventually you will pay more attention to what you wear and buy. NEVER SETTLE FOR LESS THAN A PERFECT FIT, COLOR, STYLE, ETC. WHEN SHOPPING.
It does get easier. I'm not a minimalist yet but it does get easier. I find if I reevaluate things as I'm doing laundry, it's easier for me to set a few things aside each time ... rather than attempting to do a big purge.
If you really can’t decide on an item, put it in a box, put it away for a while and see if you miss it. Joshua recommends putting a date on the box so it will not end up as more stored stuff. Also, if you can’t decide between similar items, wear them each for a while, and pick the one you feel best in. It does get easier, as you start to feel the benefits of simplifying your life.

Love the concept, weather and uniforms for sure play a huge role in this area.
Love that idea - however difficult to do in a 4 season area ... depending on where you live in the world
Layering is the answer I find.
Women problems, dude needs jeans, t-shirts and hoodies, practical, timeless and will do any season, women need to boycott their fashion overlords.
Depends if you live in a four season climate!
I suppose you could do 35 Autumn Winter pieces and 35 Spring Summer pieces!
I like that method of focusing on the positive and I do that too. Somehow it makes it easier.
Thanks.

My difficulty is keeping enough for maternity and nursing and in-between stages before “normal”. I have lots, but not many in each category.
Have broken washer sometimes glad have some extra clean clothes
This results in mountains of laundry 🧺
🧺 🧺 🧺 🧺 🧺 🧺 . If you own fewer clothes it’s fewer loads.
American's throw away so much clothes? 😰 It's best to give those clothes to individuals who are in need.
That is part of throwing away clothing, sadly. Huge amounts of donated clothing (to charities etc) goes to landfill. The only way to keep things out of landfill is to buy less. Even IF an individual in need gets the clothes, they will still end up in landfill one day eventually :(
@@amylandry This is sad, but it's the reality. Do you own fewer clothes since you've been introduced to minimalism?
@@ShiaGirl18 yep, 100%. And it's been incredibly relieving. Helps me know what to wear every day with more ease. And I shop WAY less. I love the "A Small Wardrobe" account here on YT. Her processes have helped me a lot!

Hi Joshua can do a video ur wife wardrobe and how many items she hv.
Consider :
Favorites. Color. Style. I like that.
Good speech, bro. Your videos are satisfying.
I only buy One pare of pants a yr. Ware shorts in summer.I see it as when it is so warn out then I get what I need.Same with shoes
I love your hairstyle 😍
Wonderful advice some of which I follow but intend to become even more extreme
I own literally 77 pieces of clothing. black and white skirts and soft pink or black shirts or sweaters, even my sicks and underwear fall into those colours! I got rid of 10 garbage bags full of clothes!
Well, make that 33! 13 garbage bags full of clothes have gone and now I own three pairs of footwear. Two are flip flops.
. i love that idea .
I like that your video contents and your words are also minimal. 👍🏻
Thank you for the encouraging words.
I think you've had a bit of a hair cut. Very nice. I adore your hair!
Thanks for noticing, and for the kind words.

I would go broke paying for laundry and wasting time doing it ( and many more trips up and down 3 flights of stairs!
Shoes for women are harder even jeans because of the many cuts and styles for seasons
We don't have to buy in to what the "fashion" people tell us.

Great tip
Does this include socks and under garments as well?
You bought me, Joshua!

You do separate capsules for each group. And keep them separate.
Church clothes. I thought people
go to church to worship. There is

Or has it turned into a church fashion parade as well as worshipping. I question this
church clothes just means that you dedicate a clothing for that purpose , it doesn t mean it has to be fashion or anything , it's like for a wedding day , you just choose to make the day special and that s all there is to it

2k a year per family for clothing - that is not much! If you buy good quality clothing it is going to cost much more than 2k per person a year let alone a family...

Good info, but the music is annoying.
Well as long as a person has a washer dryer that would be great......

But what about summer?
Tip: Men tend to be either a black/grey or a brown/tan depending on their complexion/hair. By deciding which one you are and sticking to that colour palate, you will have a more coordinated wardrobe, will find it easier to shop, and will portray a more stylish overall appearance.
Tyler Tyler wait so you only have one jacket?
@@helenaville5939I dont think this applies to just males. I am female, and I have limited most of my wardrobe to black/grey. I do have color in my dressy clothes. But my everyday wardrobe? Black and grey tops, black stretch pants or dark blue jeans. Its easy. It all matches. It takes me 2min to get dressed now.
2 pair of underwear??
Only thing about having a really small amount of clothes is they wear out quicker as your wearing them more often & you can run out of stuff to wear if it is all in the washing. So you would have to do your washing more often so you don't run out.
Very true re the laundry. But if you buy better quality they will far outlast cheaper clothes, which will fall apart sooner and fade and look raggedy.
1. Be poor
2. Wear the same clothes for years until they literally fall apart, sometimes when they're on you
3. Don't have any money to replace them

Finally found the right formula for my closet: 9 tops, 3 bottoms, 1 coat, 4 pieces of tshirts and 2 lounge pants for bed.
what is the process to arrive at the right formula? What was your process? ..if you don't mind sharing.

@@nicoledixon1039 Oh, sooo relieved to hear that it gets easier. Ooh great sentiments re shopping for clothes. Thank you mate. 🇦🇺👠👜👙🛍👟
