I purchased older used machines. They are solid metal and most are easy to oil & service. They typically are less expensive than a new computerized machine.
I purchased my Viking machine about 20 years ago and it still sews like a dream! It’s all metal so it’s very heavy and doesn’t bounce around when I sew and quilt! I still love it!
I am so happy you are doing this series! I've been sewing all my life. I'm 60 and have never done quilting until last week. Took a beginner class. I can already tell I'm going to be hooked! Wish I would have started a long time ago. Thank you!
I didn't start until last year at 65 and I feel the same! I wish I had started earlier! I have no interest in sewing anything but quilts now. I'm working on quilts for my grandchildren first. Praying I don't die before I have time to make all the quilts I have planned, haha!
I have been quilting for years and never knew about the bobbins already threaded. That will be a game saver for me!! Thanks so much. Cannot wait for the rest of the series. 😊
Thanks for watching. And yes! Game changer for sure!! Bobbins aren’t hard to wind but when you go through them as fast as I do (and others too) it saves a bunch of time!!
I've already commented but I wanted to compliment you Penny for your explanations. You are a very down to earth person. Thanks for helping a new beginner.
I've not made a quilt. I've made throws & hand tied them but would love to embark on the journey of quilting. Your videos are very helpful. Thank you. 💜
Thank you so much for this video! While I’m not “new” to quilting I am just a little bit more (not much). My daughter in law Brandi and my granddaughter Evelyn want to learn. So I’m going to send her this video. ❤
My machine is an Elna and it’s a 50s and it sews like a top I keep it serviced the withdrawal is it has a 7” throat place and it doesn’t have a automatic threader and cutter it’s a pain but I have to deal with it now. I want a Jukie but I’ll have to wait. Waiting for you next video ❤ I ALREADY VOTED !
I was looking at 2000 series but after watching the video on how they threaded the machine and the bobbin I don’t think I can do it with one hand I can thread my bobbin but not my machine I have to get my son to thread my needle I just got cataract surgery on my right eye and getting surgery on my left eye next month then I’ll be able to thread it I need a needle threader But anyway I need a sewing machine that’s sturdy and easy to thread with my one hand so I’m doing some investigating have any idea ❤
I just found you and hope it's not too late to ask a question. If I wanted to order some pre-wound bobbins for piecing, would I want cotton or polyester thread? There were so many choices, I wasn't sure what to order. Thanks so much for your series!!
You know! I thought of that just as I had posted this video. It will definitely be induced in future ones. Can’t go without it. 😂. Although I wish I could.

😅you don’t really need a rotary cutter and cutting mat. My mother quilted all her life and never had either one. Just the table and a pair of good scissors
For the quilting we do you have to have a cutting mat and rotary cutter to get precise cuts. In years gone by the patterns weren’t as detailed and they didn’t have to be so precise. In order to do quilting like it is now you need a rotary cutter and mat. Ex: It’s kind of like going to the grocery store. You can get there by walking but it’s a lot easier and quicker to drive.
I’m 76 and just started quilting so thank you for this series
Great!! Im so glad you’re getting started! I hope you have fun with it!
Thank you so much! I am just starting my sewing journey. So glad I found you on UA-cam!!❤
You are so welcome! Glad you enjoyed it. Have fun with sewing and quilting!!

Great video. As you said, beginners don’t need the most expensive stuff.

Me too! I’m 63 and wish I had found this sooner 🧵🪡
Welcome to the rabbit hole.❤❤❤❤

Glad you started. I’m the same. I dropped all other sewing when I started quilting.

Awwww thank you! Thank you for telling me that. It’s nice to hear. ☺️
Thanks for this new series. I’m looking forward to it.
The one thing I never knew I needed on a machine until I had it - a warning beep that your bobbin is almost empty!
Yes!
Thank you! Great basics. Getting used to rotary cutter with rulers is a great subject!
Love this series! Thank you.
I love this series! I have always wanted to start quilting but didn't know where to start. You make it look so easy! Thank you.
You should start! You can do it!!
Thank you for this... A MUST for newbies like me- A seam ripper! I treat out over half of what I drew.
Fat fingers. Sew*
Yes! I realized just as I posted it that I should have added that. Someone else added pins too. Oops!
And my phone hates me! Autocorrect at its finest.
I sure miss the southeast. Lived in Mississippi 9 years.

Wonderful! You should make one. It’s fun!
I’m so happy you’re starting the basics! I’m working on my first quilt.
Wonderful!

I just bought the handle for my ruler and I love it. I’m excited about this series. I want to know how to cut and sew straight. 😊
THANK YOU!!! So happy for a basic series!
Thank you for all the basics. I voted for ya.
Thank you!!!!!
Thank you so much. I can't wait for the next video! I'm just getting started.
Just voted for you and your shop!🥰
Yay! Thank you!
Thank you. I am so grateful for a beginner’s series. It can be a bit rough to jump in.
Overwhelming! I’ll go step by step and hope that helps. It’s a fun and addictive hobby!
Thank you❤
You are a wonderful teacher I'm in NC😊
Thank you!!!
Thank you so much for starting at the beginning ❤
You’re welcome. I hope this helps!
Thank you…. I had the learn all this the tried and true method…..fail, fail, success…lol

Yay!!! Thank you! And when you get ready for another machine, we can get any machine. But…as long as yours works, keep it stitching!!

It’s never too late! I use Magna Glide polyester most of the time.
Thank you sooooo much❤
What about the seam ripper? Being a newbie I need it. ❤❤❤❤love you.
Yes! That’s a dreaded definite!
Thanks!!!
Just perfect
Thank you!!
You should link the contest on every video. It really helps. 😊
That's a good idea! Thanks!!
I’ll do that now!
How about adding a seam ripper to the basics?
You know! I thought of that just as I had posted this video. It will definitely be induced in future ones. Can’t go without it. 😂. Although I wish I could.
I wish I didn't know what it was for either, but unfortunately, we all have to use it at some point. Ugh! 🤪
I would like to know what the suction thing is on the ruler please.
A ruler grip. It helps to keep the ruler still when you’re cutting. www.sewcharmingquiltshop.com/shop/c/p/Omnigrid-Ruler-Grip-Double-Suction-Cup-White-x69063727.htm

What about pins or clips?
I’ll go over them soon. Should have probably included them on the overview.
Where do you get that suction thing for your ruler? I’ve been looking for one and I haven’t had any luck. Voted! ❤

Question: if you are making a quilt and cutting triangles, do you need to cut on the bias? My sister insists this is so
It’s best to but it’s not completely necessary. You can still end with a good half square triangle if you don’t.
Don’t you need a rotary cutter to use with your ruler?
Yes. There’s one in there.
And then there are those at the “Jo Terry level.” What level is that? Do I really need to explain? Penny knows…
Hahahahaha you’re great!!
Where is your shop?
Clanton, AL - center of Alabama between Montgomery and Birmingham
Thank you so much. I plan to visit your shop at the end of March if not sooner!!
