It is unfortunate that the Chennai Super Kings, IPL team for the 2023 season does not have any players from Chennai or Tamil Nadu. This decision has left many fans disappointed and questioning the team’s selection strategy, while Tamil Nadu has lot of rural talents. CSK has traditionally been known for its strong connection to Chennai, ignoring the rest of Tamil Nadu, with several players from Chennai representing the team in the past. TN cricket board does not care about rest of TN- eventhough Srinivasan of India Cements is from rural Tirunelveli. However, the absence of local talent in the current squad has raised concerns among fans about the team’s commitment to nurturing homegrown players- while DMK is in power. It feels quite remarkable how the two Sinhalese Sri Lankans have managed to win over the hearts of the people in a city that even Muttiah Muralitharan, a Plantation Tamil, couldn’t manage two years back. Things have changed after years of strained relationship when CSK were forced not to play Sri Lankan players at home, and a famous actor had to pull out of a Muralitharan biopic. Is Continental Tamils against only to Indian Plantation Tamils of the island, not other major communities of the Island? Or is it due to change in political situation in TN between 2020 & 2023? It needs to be seen in 2024, with Mr M K Stalin as TN CM, known for social justice for rural folks, whether he will float a new team “Tamil Nadu Kaalaigal” to nurture the players from all over Tamil Nadu, excluding Chennai.
