  • A reading of St. Basil's Lament for Sin

    St. Basil prays:
In profound humility I weep for all my sins, voluntary and involuntary, conscious and unconscious, covert and overt, great and little, committed by word and deed, in thought and intention, day and night, at every hour and minute of my life.
How often, through selfishness, pride or false modesty, have I refused help and attention to those in need, been uncharitable, miserly, unsympathetic, mercenary and grasped at attention!
How often have I entered the House of God without fear and trembling, stood there in prayer, frivolous and absent-minded, and left it in the same spirit and disposition! And in prayer at home I have been just as cold and indifferent, praying little, lazily, and indolently, inattentively and impiously, and even completely omitting the appointed prayers!
My God, my God! Why hast Thou forsaken me? Be it unto me according to Thy will, 0 Lord! If Thou wouldst grant me light, be Thou blessed; if Thou wouldst grant me darkness, be Thou equally blessed. If Thou wouldst destroy me together with my lawlessness, glory to Thy righteous judgment; and if Thou wouldst not destroy me together with my lawlessness, glory to Thy boundless mercy!

How often do I forget my sins? Leave it to Saint Basil to remind me.

    Beautiful, and perfect diction.
The prayers of the Fathers are for all mankind, not just the individual.
    Hebrews 11, 12 and 13.
Lord, be merciful to me, the sinner.

There were lots of good words of exhortation in this talk. Surely we need to depart from sin and live holy unto Jesus.
The point about the "immortal soul" is not biblical tho. God says the soul that sins, it shall die.

Not the mindset of those that compiled the bible

Everyone will live forever, but not with the same experience. “And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.” -Daniel 12:2. “And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.” -Matthew 25:46

      @@OrthodoxWisdom Orthodox, God says:
Genesis 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
      .
But Satan says: Genesis 3:4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
      .
Why do many Christians today prefer to spread what Satan said rather than what God said?

If you trusted the Church, you wouldn’t have such a conception. This is such an uncommon belief to hold I can hardly think of anyone who has argued such a thing.

@@OrthodoxWisdom Orthodox, There are tens of millions of Christians who have refused to believe Satan's lie that one can sin and still live forever in misery. The entire Seventh-day Adventist Church believes what God says, that the soul that sins, it shall die, not live in misery forever.

Did St. Basil write this based from his own life? It’s hard to imagine that he ever struggled with some of these sins.
