In every other video I've watched on taking divots ahead of the ball the instructor has said that you need to get your weight forward to achieve this. I've found this advice to be really unhelpful. Thanks for the great drill and info Adam! Still the best.
Absolutely brilliant instructional video. I've started playing again after a 23 year break and I've been struggling to get the ball up cleanly. After the "throw the alignment sticks" drill, I'm now consciously making sure I get the same feeling during my downswing. Does it work every time.... No but when it does, it feels so sweet and I have so much more control. It's really given me something to focus on. Thank you
This video has been a real key to my ball striking improvement. The two keys for me are the wrists in the impact/follow through and the upward thrust of the hips. I’ve not seen this explained in any other instruction. Thanks a lot for the valuable info.
Adam, i have golfed here and there for years without much improvement. Since I have started watching your lessons I can see results immediately. There are heaps of Golf Instruction videos on youtube but I find your manner of speaking and straightforward delivery very easy to comprehend. Thank you!!
Thank you. New golfer here - 25 handicap. I have been told countless times to keep my head down and I hit fat shots. Only lately have I come to understand that might not be quite the right advice, as you state in your video so clearly.
I just tried the drill at the driving range visualizing throwing the club down toward the ground about 8 feet in front of me and it helped me get my hands and club grip in front of the ball at impact which led to much improved ball contact and divots in front of the ball which I wasn't able to do before. Thanks
Great content as always, Adam. Taught my buddy how to be a ball striker a few months back and he swears it's the greatest golf instruction he's ever learned. He told me today he's added about 15 yards to every club. I basically went over your physics lesson on forward shaft lean and de-lofting the club to get the sweet spot on the back of the ball.
taking a divot doesn't cause the ball to spin, you can be a great ball striker without taking a divot at all (and create loads of spin). I think Adam might even have another video on the subject of spin
Hi Adam, thanks for this video and if I may offer my observation. The drill you mentioned about putting pressure forward of the ball by throwing the alignment stick, I feel I flip my hands and wrist too much which lead to inconsistent contact. Maybe I am doing the drill wrong? But your earlier concepts of sweeping the broom and forward leaning the shaft worked better for me. Cheers
Great drill Adam! I have a tendency to Bend my knees through impact and that causes a bit deep divots. I will try focus on straightening the hips through impact for more shallow divots. Thanks again for great explanation👍
Thanks Tom. With the driver we are set up with upper body more behind the ball, so at impact while the look in the hands/arms is similar it's a pretty level hit. All the best, Adam
Hey Adam ... thx for ALL ur content on here .... really an amazing teacher ;) I'm a low hcp player assisting lots of people on their game ... and u can see many golfers "push" their shoulders in front of their body instead of clutching it tight to the side of their breast/chest... this forward push gets the arms too lose and therefor that lead shoulder much lower at impact and shaft squared up instead of slightly forward at impact. Wouldn't u say that keeping that lead arm within ur chest/tight to the side of it at setup is important for that perfect impact position ... it also makes the first move more towards natural turn instead of push/pull arm move.... or what?! Take care peeps....
Hi Adam, 20 handicap here. Wondering if taking divots is a little too advanced for me. Maybe I should work on the fundamentals? By the way, joined your Scratch Academy and can’t wait for the DVDs.
Thanks David, I hope you'll enjoy the DVDs. No, I don't think it's too advanced, even if you don't get a full fledged divot, keep trying to get the bottom of the swing past the ball. Best, Adam
Yes Robert, it will. Just do it the best you can, same as me (I can't do it with the freedom and force that I used to be able to do). All the best, Adam
Geez Greg, that's unbelievable! How about the Bears Monday night game... I tried to text you the other day, but the number I have must not be correct? All the best, Adam
Looks simple but it’s more complicated then shown. I find my divots are a bit deeper but not so that they are called carpet remnants. ;) ;) Something to practice away from the course. My flexibility is not as good as it was at 50 years old ( now 75) Thanks
Great Video as always, I do have a question though, how far can I open my hips at impact? Because most pros have them at like a 45 degree angle but Dustin Johnson for example has them nearly pointing towards target. I'm struggeling with this because I am flexible enough to have them nearly closed at impact but I'm not sure if I should do that or stop them at like a 45 degree angle or so. Greetings
Ahh man..I'm a 10 handicap, and I've been struggling so hard w puring my irons this year. I'm just not getting that pop off the club. I'm 10-15 yards shorter on my 6-7-8-9..and 20 yards on my 5-4. Such a struggle right now. Battling it hard
Just finished watching your video on divots after the ball strike, where you indicate that your belt and gluts rise through the strike. When I try that, I hit shanks a great deal of the time. How do I avoid that>
Richard, Hard to say without seeing you swing. My guess is that you are thrusting your hips toward the ball (early extension). Hope this helps. Best, Adam
Really insightful! Tomorrow I’ll try this drill! I’m tired of my inconsistent ball striking 😢
In every other video I've watched on taking divots ahead of the ball the instructor has said that you need to get your weight forward to achieve this. I've found this advice to be really unhelpful. Thanks for the great drill and info Adam! Still the best.

i agree, first video that made sense, for me anyways. thanks
Great video. One of the best explanations on how to rotate thru the ball. Thanks
Thanks very much Steve.

Thanks Hack, I hope it goes well.

Unfortunate typo (I hope) on your part! 🤣🤣🤣

Adam...that was brilliantly simple - simply brilliant!
Thanks, very kind of you Martin.

"That just felt......great. Makes me wonder why I don't play golf like that".......Love it. I often ask myself the same question
Ha, it does happen doesn't it.

great lesson, tks!
Thanks very much

Thank you. That’s the finest explanation I’ve seen. I am guilty of all arms, head down, chicken elbow. Your videos show the way out of my funky swing.
Thanks for the comment, and glad you liked the video.

That was a great video, I think alot of people would like to take a diviot after the shot & get spin.
Thanks Robert, I hope you'll make good progress with your game.

Thanks for watching the video Carlos.
All the best, Adam
Could you please explain perhaps in a future video the direction of the divot, Adam? Thanks!
Thanks Paul, I'll try to get to that. Generally speaking, at the target is ideal

These drills are just to give feel, if the other ones help you more that's fine.

@@Scratchgolfacademy .
Your ball position shows the ball off the left heal.. Do you recommend that for all irons?
tom,
I tend to play the ball farther forward than intended....no, more in the middle is what I recommend.
All the best, Adam
Nice job, where is aiming point for driver?
Thanks Tom.
With the driver we are set up with upper body more behind the ball, so at impact while the look in the hands/arms is similar it's a pretty level hit.

Great stuff
Thanks for the comment Paul.

Is this akin to a Punch Shot (the drill)?
Yes, that’s about it
Great drill 👍
Thanks!
Best, Adam
That is my 'punch' shot and I hit it more solid than regular shots. I'll try it on the range, and then- make a longer swing. Thanks.
Hope it goes well for you Paul.
All the best, Adam
That seems simple. I will try that drill, lately i have been hitting my irons ok but it feels like its off the bottom groove👍
Hope it helps Steve.
All the best, Adam
I've noticed some pros take a divot with a fairway wood. Do you recommend this or you prefer a sweeping action ?
Michael,
Generally a sweeping action. The pros hit it very hard, with lots of shaft lean, but even they sweep it somewhat.

I'd look into the USA kids clubs. Hope this helps.

Scratch Golf Academy I’m from England any national companies?
Looks very easy when you demonstrate but will it work for me at 84?
Yes Robert, it will.
Just do it the best you can, same as me (I can't do it with the freedom and force that I used to be able to do).

As a player who never takes divot, I think I need to try this drill right away!
Hope it goes well for you James.

Fond of remembrance of handsome him needed dedicated server is you yup
Love all your videos Adam but I can never seem to take a divot, I can’t figure it out.
Thanks Greg, I hope you can sort it out.

Best of luck with it Shawn.
Thanks, Adam
Dr vernoncoleman you tube great videos and integrity
Thanks George.

Really useful. Understandable, none of the 'keep your left thumb aligned with your right toenail' stuff that is such a turn-off
Thanks, and glad you liked the video.
All the best, Adam
great advise, but.... i know you were talking just before the swing.
shouldn’t be so much tension an exertion should there?
Alex,
There has to be some exertion, but i agree, less than most people put out.
All the best, Adam
So you dont recomend a full follow through? Or was that just for the drill purposes
Kennan,
That's just the drill.

That’s it. That’s the term. I am seriously beguiled by this. I could never fully explain my psychological pain. Lol
👍👍
Sadly I have forward shaft lean and still hit fat shots
Hard to comment without seeing your swing, sorry
Best, Adam
Adam, it's vertical, not verticle!!
Tom,
I'm aware of that, maybe pronunciation gets off once in a while during filming.

I tried this drill and then I nicknamed my wife One Eye.
I like the drill and it'll be good for my wife. She has never hit the ball and taken a divot
I hope she makes good progress.
All the best, Adam
When you have your hands in front of you like that dont you close the club face and hit it further
Josh,
Yes, there is some de-loft, and that does hit the ball farther.
