- Have you ever backpacked to a mountain lake, seen fish jumping and wished you had rod and line to throw out? I did. What's more I'm a terrible fisherman. And my backpack is full. So I needed something super minimal and super easy to use. This led me to Tenkara Fishing. A very easy, very minimal, Japanese style of fly fishing that is perfect for every backpacker and every fishing skill level. Tenkara Fishing is changing the way I backpack. My hikes are now planned with fishing in mind and I never have idle hands on solo trips. It's brought a whole new element to my outdoor experience and hopefully will bring some extra joy to yours as well.

0:00 Intro to Tenkara Fishing
1:07 The gear you'll need

4:55 Tenkara fishing tips
When I saw the title of this video, I was like, "oh no way! :) and an Idaho company, "oh no way :) !" and then the price "oh....no way :(
Excellent intro to Tenkara. Thanks.
(About) how long is the protective case that the rod comes in? Great video
Great stuff man , I am new @this game what would you recommend for a starter ? I live in good OL Pittsburgh PA. I do fish hardcore with a spinner reel.
Hey, I just got home after fishing the Boise River and out at Eagle Island and your video was waiting. Thanks for the info.
You're welcome!
Kewl.
Thanks, great info
You're welcome
Those look like good lightweight setups. I don’t want to come off rude here with this question but I need to understand this.
Would you not get the same flies further out with a fly rod and have more versatility?
I get the ultralight backpacking concept as I practice it myself. However if I’m spending hiking hours fishing anyway then I might opt for a slightly heavier setup.
I only backpack fish with a small spin cast so not an expert by any means.
I get the ultralight nature of the tenkara rods but you can get fly reels that weigh almost nothing and open up a whole world of opportunity
I own three fly reels 🙂 If you watch my Chalk Basin video my girlfriend took her rod and reel while I took my tenkara rod and guess who caught fish! I think the key phrase is “idiot proof.” Yes, if you use a rod and reel you could catch bigger fish. But mastering the full fly fishing setup is not easy. The cast is harder. More options is more to worry about. More parts that can malfunction while in the middle of no where. So I ditched the reel and am much happier worrying about less out there and catching more fish. Cheers! ✌️
this seems like the perfect rod to take backpacking! husband and I got some $30 rods for backpacking and they already broke. haha
Kara, get this for your husband. My girlfriend is the one who bought me this for Christmas. She never has to get me another Christmas gift ever again🙂
Ultra idiot proof? Finally a fishing video for me
😆
I've been looking into these rods, cool vid!
Thanks man! Get one they're awesome!
Another great video Jon, thank you first of all. Any suggestions for fishing rods that don't cost that much? BTW...my son and I hiked your same hike just about in Hells Canyon, wonderful experience and amazing place. Those rock mountains were formed 300 million years ago, they were around during the dinosaurs!! Any suggestions on less expensive lite weight fish setups would be appreciated.
That’s awesome man glad you got to do that with your son. In terms of fishing, a river guide once told me to ditch my tenkara rod and use a willow branch with line and string (Not joking). He showed me on the river, it does work 😂
Don't know how I missed this one dammit 😫 lol I'm already looking at winter gear but... 😅✌️💚
What winter gear you need, all of it?
@@JonConti I've been finally getting into the Uber expensive hunting clothing gear like Kuiu just to have more versatility in my seasons but the want never ends... 🙃 haha
LOL, idiot proof way to go fishing says the guy who bear sprayed himself! LOL Sorry Jon, much respect, but I just could not resist! I fish Tenkara and love it for back country creek and lake fishing.
Hahahah 😂 so then you know this fishing setup is idiot proof!
@@JonConti indeed Mr. C
Have you used this setup on the Boise River?
Briefly. I didn't have much success. I would use a traditional fly rod on the Boise, this thing isn't really made for that. This is more for small streams, creeks, ponds, and mountain lakes.
Is ur and Britney Spears kid doing ok 😂😂u look just like him
Overpriced products tho
😂aliexpressen ugyanez más néven 15-20$
Tenkara I'd not very good for lakes.
I don’t know what you’re talking about I spank fish in lakes with a tenkara rod.
lol well you spent over $200 on a stick so not fully proof
Right? Couldn’t someone just take some tackle in an ultralight kit then get a nice whippy green limb off a larger or a small straight sapling?
I was really excited when he said “easy” and “fishing simple for idiots”… I wasn’t expecting $200 gear. That’s insane
This is an advertisement video for a high end rod. If you want to spend less then spend less
Okay intro to Tenkara. But the products you showed are iPhone-levels of overpriced.
Tenkara is NOT an idiot proof fishing style. I wouldn't recommend it for most folks due to the learning curve and limitations. Get yourself a 2, 3, or 4 piece spinning rod and reel and call it a day.
How many pieces? That's too many pieces
