The very first computer I used that had a webcam (Silicon Graphics Indy, 1996) came with a slide-over lens cover. I suspect one major reason the computer makers won't build-in a sliding lens cover (other than the accumulated cost of them cutting into the CEO's donut & sushi budget) is because there would be thousands of customers calling in because their webcam wasn't working (when they'd just have the cover closed)

BT (or more accurately the Post Office as it was then) had an internal videophone trial in the late 1960s. Followed by about 20 sets of the Mark 2 Viewphone, most at the HQ building in Gresham Street, London and the rest at the Dollis Hill Research Station. Those were analogue systems, monochrome, 319 lines (vertical scan in Mark 1, conventional horizontal scan in mark 2), 50 field/s, 2:1 interlace, 1 MHz bandwidth running over twisted pair cables.
The H.261 standardisation process began in 1985. I was its editor, participating in the international meetings and led the small group at BT Research Labs building a pair of hardware prototype codecs. Each was the size of a fridge-freezer.
All the subsequent video compression standards in the H.26x series and the MPEG series are based on the same techniques as in the original H.261.

Eh, I do group facetime calls with my family a couple of times a week. And I'll facetime friends if I need to ask them about something where it would help if they could see it, or I'll do a video call to my roommates if I spot something they might want and I need to know if they want me to pick it up for them. And of course I do a video call with my girlfriend quite often because it makes the whole long distance relationship thing much easier. I actually do a lot of video calling, and so do most of my friends and family, but I'm guessing I'm not exactly the typical viewer of this channel.

Also, in X.21 mode, it should theoretically be possible to connect to a PC with a dual RS422 interface per X.21 link. But then, I have no idea about which software could be used to decode/encode the communication.

Really interesting ! I actually worked on some of the technology behind all of this. At the time telco companies were in a battle with IT companies as to which technology would provide internet to the home. Telco's were pushing ISDN (2B+D) whilst the rest of the industry were pushing TCP/IP. BT even launched a service called "Home highway" which provided ISDN (2 x 64 KB/s) to the home in the mid-90's and I knew a few small businesses in remote areas who signed onto it. But as we now know, 'broadband' came and demolished all these ideas of delivering internet and video-phones to the home via an ancient telecoms standard (ISDN).
