when the characters you are trying to compare are that smart it really just depends on the author's word at that point. there are millions of ways you could explain for each side that it really doesn't matter. plus if your comparing who would 'win' it's even more pointless because luck will always be a factor

It wasn't only a cop-out. It was a completely new rule given by the Shinigami King, in response to Minoru selling the Death Note. In addition, Ryuk is Ruyk and didn't care to tell Minoru of the new rule before writing his name down.
@@ThatZillaGuy2 If Minoru hadn't told Ryuk to never come see him, he would've warned him about the rule or try something to keep things interesting. Minoru specifically ordered Ryuk to keep his word and never meet each other again. Except it eventually backfired on him.
True. Ryuk didn't really have to follow Minoru's orders though. He sure didn't follow Light's orders in the manga when ordered to kill Near and the other task force members. I do like the fact that Minoru's orders did backfire, making Ryuk reflect that the Death Note does indeed curse its owners with misery, even if they don't write a single name down.
ThatZillaGuy2 The difference was that Ryuk realized when light ordered him to kill Near that Light has lost. The game was over. Minoru lost because he didn’t have any drive. Because his goal was, like him, extremely lazy. As a result, he shunned Ryuk once he believed his job was done.
@@hotbombbb It is mentioned briefly in "13: How to Read." iirc I think Ohba said something along the lines of "She lost her memories of the notebook, but kept her love for Light, eventually someone, probably Matsuda let it slip that Light died and so she kills herself on Valentines Day that year"
Actually, the Shinigami King MADE that new rule. Not Ryuk. Ryuk didn't want to tell Minoru about the new rule the Shinigami King made. Minoru told Ryuk to never come back,so he killed Minoru.
Death Note Owner: *Gives the Death note to anybody with no boundaries* Shinigami King: :0 Holy shit this is gooooooood!!!!! Death Owner: *Sells the Death Note* Shinigami King: I suddenly have "Standards" now. >:(
I think he was just pissed off at Ryuk for going back to the human world again. The first time probably caused a lot of trouble between the two worlds, and he didn't want Ryuk staying too long. He requested Ryuk to come back quickly once he's no longer following minoru, but then minoru sold the death note. At that point the shinigami king probably just said "F***! We really need to add some more boundaries!"
the king of the shinigami got angry because the humans put the death note according to the market rules, and the only thing that governs the death note is supposed to be the rules set by the king of the Shinigami
There is nothing bad with coming to human world. There is even Death Note rule that says, there may be only 6 shinigamis at the time. Also one shinigamu can only lend 3 notebooks at once. Also one human can have only 6 books at once.
I think the reason why Near wasn't as invested in catching A-Kira is simply because Minoru never killed anyone. That means that Minoru isn't a criminal and Near doesn't have any legal reason to pursue him. Unless of course the entire world made a law making it illegal to own a Death Note, which for some reason isn't a thing in this fictional world yet.
Light did not do one time crime like Minoru. It's almost impossible to capture Light without knowing about deathnote. L had got many clues and chances are because Light want to challenge L. In fact they directly challenge one another. (Light basically said Yo L: "catch me if you can", and L directly said to Kira: "Kill me if you can"). Edit: After L challenge Kira, Light's goal is not only put fear and kill criminals, but also to kill L (without sacrificing his life span by using shinigami eyes). That's why, we can't compare Minoru with Light in terms of intelligence because their objectives are different (And why Minoru's chapter is shorter)
He really thought that DEATH GODS wouldn't care that he was throwing subtlety out the window? If he heard Light's story then he would know that Ryuk isn't the only shinigami.
@@andrewmoulton7429 L was looking for proof to checkmate light. Light was trying to checkmate L by proving him and misa to be innocents and kill L. And as the result, Light won. It's hard to say who is smarter but one thing is for sure, both of them have almost equal intelligence.
Minoru found a way to cheat the system and got punished heavily for it, he got done dirty tbh. Reminds me of a video in youtube about Terraria, a game that actually rewards the players for finding out ways to exploit the system instead of punishing them like the Shinigami king did to Minoru.
Minoru's plan however was literally unbeatable. That said Light and Minoru did use the book in completely different ways so a real comparison is impossible. How would Light have sold it? Hiw would Minoru have used it to kill? That's what we would need to know to comparw the two. That said for his specific goal Minoru did create a better plan.
Oni Master Lol what? If anything, playing it safe only reinforces how smart Minoru was. He didn’t take needless risks, because he had a specific goal and went about it in the most pragmatic way possible. Being more idealistic doesn’t make you more intelligent. Not to mention Minoru lives in a world under far more surveillance than when Light was alive.
@@redrobins731 To be fair to Light, he is the first ever recorded death note wielder. Minoru already had the gist that his death is probable because Kira (Light) died.
@@zushi5798 My thing with Light is that he should've won. Like being able to kill via death note in real life would be untraceable. If he just didn't engage with the investigation he would never have been caught. Even in today's world that would be the case.i know that's the point, that it's his pride that causes his down fall, but it does demonstrate a clear sign of intellectual failing.
He may not have had as much knowledge as Light but he was definitely wiser because Light could have avoided the situation with L but chose to play the “game” while Minora knew he couldn’t get away with everything Light did and chose to use the death note in another way.
despite this a question Ryuk posed in the manga was this "everyone who uses the death note suffers in the end" but Minoru used to death note so would he suffer? originally it seemed not as he had never written in it. but as it ended using the death note in any capacity only brings suffering and sadness
@shin jinyi Light appearing in death parade was more like an easter egg or a cameo ,it doesnt mean its canon to the story and they never confirmed that it was really Light Yagami
Ryuk and Light explained that it doesn't have anything to do with the fact of being a death note user or not, but rather that everyone goes to nothingness after dying. I think that is also explained in a how to use section in the manga (I didn't watch the anime yet) that there is where humans go after passing away. Basically in the worls of Death Note, heaven and hell don't exist and neither does God.
Light is tactic, he made move and adapt along with his enemies strategy and tactic. Minoru is strategy, he made move before the war even started and has decided the outcome of the war.
Right?! at least make it a rule BEFORE he plans anything?! Its like u plan sth 80% in and suddenly your boss be putting it a rule that sabotages your project without telling u which gave u false hope your project would end perfect, only to have it fucked up badly in the end. omg the frustration
To be fair, the Shinigami King is probably tired of all these death notes being passed around behind his back and taken advantage of so he probably said well fuck all this shit lol
One thing that stood out was: if you don't use the death note, or do not follow it's rules, the Shinigami King will add new rules in, to screw you over.
There's no denying that Minoru is smarter than any normal person, but nowhere near as smart as Light. If Minoru lived as a long as Light he might of been smarter, or at least as smart as him, but we'll never know.
It doesn't really matter because he had different goals regarding the notebook. Technically, his plan was perfect. His only mistake(arguably) was not worrying about what the shinigami up there would react to his plan.
Eh I doubt it. His plan wasn't even all that smart. All he did was try and game the system and try and make money off of it but he fucked around with the wrong beings. He was ultimately too young and immature to think of the consequences of trying to profit off of not using the death note and apparently that's the one taboo the Shinigami King just simply couldn't let slide. Had he been more mature he might have been able to think ahead to that point but he couldn't, oh well.
@@Tupadre97 I mean there was no way I'd think of that plan. I don't know for sure he would become smarter than Light, but he is at least smarter than any of us 😅

He's not smarter but he played it so damn good and didn't kill anyone, Light is the iconic psycho b that we all know but for a medium student what he did was really interesting to read, can't deny
Minoru is so Smart That he made Shinigami king so pissed off that he changed the rules in order to kill him just because HE HAD TOUCHED THAT DAMN BOOK.
@@yamete_kudasai6969 Um....Near and Mello knew Light was Kira and the entire Kira task force suspected Light was guilty but had no evidence to prove it. Also Mikami needed to mess up in order for Light to lose cuz....SPOILER ALERT....that's how all bad guys lose.
I think Minoru's words at the beginning of the story reveal that he's actually quite smart. Truly smart individuals use their intellect to solve problems of the future, as in societal problems. Light solved some problems, but he also created quite a few as well. Minoru was able to create an economic boon for Japan. Also, just a hunch, but his seeming apathy towards the bidding process made me feel like he knew how things were going to shakedown. The fact that he obviously didn't want anyone to die makes me further believe that he knew whoever won wouldn't be able to use the Death Note in any case. Maybe Ryuk was entirely upfront with his recalling of Light's story, including the machinations and underhandedness of Shinigami. Maybe this tipped Minoru off that there was a possibility for a bad end.
Great analysis, I really enjoyed the One-shot, was good to just see the universe explored again. Minoru is brilliant in his own right, and thinks up a few great ideas, but I wouldn't really compare that to all the insane things that Light had to overcome. Their ideals also require very different levels of intellect. Minoru just wanted to live an easy life and make some cash without any risk to himself. While Light wanted to be recognized as a "god" and change the entire world, and despite him dying in the end, he practically achieves his goal anyway. Light aimed much higher, achieved much more, but took way more risks because of his hubris, but he was able to get out of some insanely tight corners. Minoru plays things safe and was able to piss off the Shinigami King to change the rules, which I did find amusing, and his most impressive feat, but in the end they both die and Ryuk is the true winner. Maybe if Minoru was around for longer he could have proved himself, but from what we got in the One-shot Light proves smarter than him.
I've never heard a single other person talk about it, but isn't there actually quite a large plot hole in the bus jacking episode with Raye? After it happens Raye asks Light not to tell anyone that he saw an FBI agent in Japan. Light responds : "I won't tell anyone, including my father". Light never mentions to Raye that his father is a police officer before this, his assumption that Raye knows Light's father's occupation bluntly gives away the fact that Light knows Raye is specifically following him.
Minoru seems to be extremely smart, he thinks through his situation and the dynamics and comes up with an almost foolproof plan that just gets thrown out the window because of a literal act of god. But it's hard to compare Light and Minoru because Light makes it his goal to show us, the world, how smart he is, he's like a boxer climbing the ranks by fighting the strongest (smartest) he can find, while Minoru is focused on having his plan come to fruition. Their goals are completely different as well, Kira is trying to create an old testament world where evil is always punished but Minoru doesn't try anything that complex.
@@archimidiz he was able to took that step coz he had option he used kira's fear as. a bait to sell it but light didn't had that option he himself had to create the fear of kira Whereas he had to face L and minoru faced near which is only one side of L
Light is definitely smarter, Minoru seems more pragmatic. Technically he won the shinigami king just got salty about the situation and changed the rules.
Light wouldn't be Light without his stupid ego. This is ego is what drove him to do what he did for the entirety of the series. The reason why Near defeated him was because unlike Light he had no ego or any desire to compete for dominance.
Light lost cause mikami fucked up his plan, mello facilitated things for near by kidnapping the reporter, forcing mikami to use the book and then steal it, it wasn't his ego.
It’s crazy how anyone can down play light like the man still would’ve won if it was only him vs Near and even when Mello came in Light was still going to win if Mikami didn’t fuck up just think about that for a second
In the manga Matsuda suggests that Near manipulated Mikami writing his name in the real Death Note, cause after Light's death Mikami was incarcerated and then died a few days after. I don't know why Light's whole death scene was changed in the Anime.
knteka Makami was the perfect candidate he thought just like “Kira”. Trusting him was no mistake not even Light would expect him to make a stupid mistake like he did Light specifically told him not to act no matter what on your own and Mikami didn’t listen.
El Mina It’s not even possible to affect Mikami because he has the shinigami eyes so no Near didn’t use the deathnote to control him even if he tried it wouldn’t have worked so Matsuda’s theory even in the manga would be false.
@@ireupzz4233 As far as I remember, it's never stated that if you have Shinigami eyes you are immune to the Death Note's power. Can you link me the chapter where it's stated?
Even if it's L that we are talking about here how could you find minoru? There is litteraly million of people who got 1 billion yen and even if you found minoru you can't even arrest him because he didn't kill anyone
It think this argument is like comparing apples to oranges. Light and Minoru are both geniuses. But how they used the death note imply their rules of engagement. Light openly draws out a conflict due to his hubris and gives the opposition an opportunity to counteract him hence the story we know and love. Minoru analyses the world and how it operates to come up with a way to Accomplish his goal as fast as possible. Giving his opposition no time to counter him.
Also it’s not fair to keep the “smartest middle schooler” angle because the implications of the statement was to highlight that he doesn’t know enough about the world to accurately orchestrate his plan. He probably had a general idea of what he wanted to do but not how to do it. So after the time skip when he better understands that world he’s much more capable.
The Shinigami king didn't HAVE to intervene, it was more so a "Ryuk, the fuck? Don't do that" and made a rule preventing such a thing from happening again.
I'd imagine hes done that before, making new rules for the death note. Cause there's no way it started out as 3 trillion rules, so someone or a shinigami had to have done some whack shit that caused more rules to be written
@@tylerlackey1175 yeah when you think about it, shinigamis use death note to get lifetime if the Death become a government weapon, or more death note are sold they would be billions of life that shinigamis won't collect
@@sgcastle8389 Agreed, this is why the Shinigami King had to make the rule, what's the point of a death god when a government is secretly killing everyone without a fear of retaliation? World leaders could die in an accident or have a virus, no one would think it be the USA. When a powerful person is given a deathnote, it undermines the authority of the Shinigami King. If humans had a deathnote and never used it to kill, it defears the purpose of the deathnote.
We shouldn't compare Minoru with Light... Light fought L , Near and Mello all alone.. He tried to make world a better place and due to him crime rates decreased 70% all around the world. Where as Minoru just sold death note for money. We clearly should not think of him as new kira. Kira(Light) was God
Minoru is not as smart as Light. Light is able to put several steps ahead to further his goal, to build his utopia, is willing to defend it against any threat, and has no hesitation to execute his plan. Light also able to adjust his plan to any given situation, making him much more dangerous than Minoru. Minoru, on the other hand, takes 2 whole years to build this plan. Yes, Minoru's plan managed to outwit even Near, but that's because it doesn't involve using the Death Note to its full potential. But Minoru's move is not to be underestimated. With just one single move, selling the Death Note world wide, and sharing the benefit to the Japanese citizens equally, he managed to accomplish 2 goals: 1. Ressurect Kira's existence once more 2. Re-ignite the idea that Kira is God, and regain the full support from the public And he's done those without Near being able to even probe him, let alone investigate him. That simple gesture really set things up for the future generations of Kira, if it was already in their plan to publish.
The end of the one shot genuinely made me so sad. He didn’t deserve to die. He literally made everyone’s lives better without having to sacrifice anyone like light did.

The fact that L was facing someone in a real life setting who happened to have a magic artifact (book), still gives Light the edge regardless. They live in what would be a real world like us, who would be able to prove that a book killed someone or that supernatural abilities are the reason behind someones death. Despite him facing L and the police...he had the edge simply by having a untraceable method to his killings.
Yeah. Light had godlt beings and forces with him. L and the police had to investigate it like any other crime. The setting was kinda unfair to begin with. I think it's kinda bullshit that Ryuk spotted the hidden cameras for Light despite of saying that he wouldn't help him.
Lelouche was foiled/figured out multiple times, whereas Light managed to keep up his ruse and avoid detection until the very end with far fewer resources. While Lelouche does have an overall better understanding of human nature and how people work, he would probably lose to Light tbh. If they were to switch places, I have a hard time believing Light wouldn't succeed at Lelouch's goal without dying, but not the other way around.
Idk they are different Lelouch specializes in military strategy and acquiring political power, while light’s specializes in manipulating people so they willingly do what he wants (Lelouch has geass so he can “cheat” in this aspect and control anyone he sees for free)
Nick Elakon true. you can make an argument that that would be the same in this case. This kid had all the right stuff to be great and though it was short lived, Ryuk was entertained and interested in his plan as well
It's a kid playing safe in an era where it is pretty much impossible to escape from the police once you are under their radar. And he didn't have any intention on using the notebook, so he and Ryuk just got what they wanted.
@Emperor L and Near never claimed to be good, and Mello was a freaking mob boss, lol. Death Note isn't about good vs evil, It's about two conflicting ideologies having an epic cat and mouse game. Neither party holds the moral high ground against the other, L is as much of a criminal as Light, he just didn't commit mass murder, just different types of crimes. In the end, i feel like the moral of the story is: no matter how capable you are, or how much influence or special abilities you have, you will never change the status quo. The world will stay the same no matter what, it's Impossible to create an utopia.
Light in my opinion, was a brilliant mastermind of a genius visionary one. Now having read it, my thought on Minoru is that he was not a genius, nor an idiot too. One thing for certain, he was more like clever. Although it was too bad they had to add another rule so sudden.

Minoru lost because of a cop-out rule he didn't even know.

He requested Ryuk to come back quickly once he's no longer following minoru, but then minoru sold the death note. At that point the shinigami king probably just said "F***! We really need to add some more boundaries!"

H.Iwaizumi0610 feels bad
There is nothing bad with coming to human world. There is even Death Note rule that says, there may be only 6 shinigamis at the time. Also one shinigamu can only lend 3 notebooks at once. Also one human can have only 6 books at once.
I think the reason why Near wasn't as invested in catching A-Kira is simply because Minoru never killed anyone. That means that Minoru isn't a criminal and Near doesn't have any legal reason to pursue him. Unless of course the entire world made a law making it illegal to own a Death Note, which for some reason isn't a thing in this fictional world yet.
Even if near is as invested with the case as ever, it's still impossible to catch minoru. It's near's L.

Also, unlike Light, Minoru knew when to stop

@@TotalTech_ agree l wanted to see a light vs L face off, not some annoying little kid
they shouldve ended it when L died. near and mello suck ass

Light’s plan was far more complex and ambitious in design, and he had to do a lot more thinking on his feet than Minoru.
@Happy Rambutan Shonen Jump’s site/app has it, but idk if it’s free to read anymore. It used to be!
Light's plan was unnecessarily complex. Minoru simply avoided all that and took the most optimal route.
@@archimidiz he was able to took that step coz he had option he used kira's fear as. a bait to sell it but light didn't had that option he himself had to create the fear of kira
Whereas he had to face L and minoru faced near which is only one side of L
@@archimidiz define "unnecessarily complex"?
@@ShoSho-cq7ctTo late but Fnaf Lore
Light is definitely smarter, Minoru seems more pragmatic. Technically he won the shinigami king just got salty about the situation and changed the rules.
The shinigami king got alot of salt
If Minoru would have just checked to see if selling the note was a rule he wouldn't have died
I'm just glad someone admits that light could have won if it wasn't for his stupid ego.
well they had to make fun story....
Well even serial killers leave clue because they like the manipulation of people trying to catch them
Light wouldn't be Light without his stupid ego. This is ego is what drove him to do what he did for the entirety of the series. The reason why Near defeated him was because unlike Light he had no ego or any desire to compete for dominance.
Don't forget that he was Critically Insane.
One could argue light trusting Mikami was a mistake on lights part and therefore the reason he lost

Yes
I’m so obsessed with it🥺
I am obsessed with Near's long hair, i wonder how he takes care of it
Near lost because he didn't have the real L to figure out everything for him already like he did last time.

He might not be as smart as Light but he was still smart af, the fact that the Shinigami king had to intervene is really crazy
@@JotakuJo everyone would think it's USA and everyone would war against it
Its so weird finally hearing about Death Note after awhile, but i’m hyped for a comeback.
We shouldn't compare Minoru with Light... Light fought L , Near and Mello all alone.. He tried to make world a better place and due to him crime rates decreased 70% all around the world.
Where as Minoru just sold death note for money.
We clearly should not think of him as new kira.
Kira(Light) was God
your right
He balanced the economy lol, that’s not nothing and he did that without killing anyone
Light didn’t face L, Near, and Mello all alone. He had the help of Misa, Rem, Takada, and Mikimi.
Red Robins yea kinda but he did make it seem like he was solo
Mazyus Scott because he’s an arrogant douchebag lol he had plenty of help
Light over everything, I loved the one shot manga tho
Minoru is not as smart as Light.
Light is able to put several steps ahead to further his goal, to build his utopia, is willing to defend it against any threat, and has no hesitation to execute his plan.
Light also able to adjust his plan to any given situation, making him much more dangerous than Minoru.
Minoru, on the other hand, takes 2 whole years to build this plan.
Yes, Minoru's plan managed to outwit even Near, but that's because it doesn't involve using the Death Note to its full potential.
But Minoru's move is not to be underestimated. With just one single move, selling the Death Note world wide, and sharing the benefit to the Japanese citizens equally, he managed to accomplish 2 goals:
1. Ressurect Kira's existence once more
2. Re-ignite the idea that Kira is God, and regain the full support from the public
And he's done those without Near being able to even probe him, let alone investigate him.
That simple gesture really set things up for the future generations of Kira, if it was already in their plan to publish.
The thing is Minoru doesn't have God complex.
@@horassiregar1720 I know someone who does

Light giving up ownership of the DT and manipulating himself into becoming genuine friends with L is about as big as it gets.
Light was playing Impostor that would put any Among Us player to shame
Just finished the series a few days ago. A truly phenomenal show
The fact that L was facing someone in a real life setting who happened to have a magic artifact (book), still gives Light the edge regardless.
@Fr33 Worker Do you wish Light would've won?
Fr33 Worker the official guides have lights intelligence rated higher than Ls. What are you talking about?
Fr33 Worker so your not gonna dispute the authors and not back up your claim? 😂
Fr33 Worker I’m willing to have a civil debate with you. I just wanna get insight on why you think l is smarter than light.
Has Seth every addressed or hinted to a video on Light vs Lelouche ?????
Lelouche was foiled/figured out multiple times, whereas Light managed to keep up his ruse and avoid detection until the very end with far fewer resources. While Lelouche does have an overall better understanding of human nature and how people work, he would probably lose to Light tbh. If they were to switch places, I have a hard time believing Light wouldn't succeed at Lelouch's goal without dying, but not the other way around.
Man I want this now... I wish this was just a real anime lol
Idk they are different Lelouch specializes in military strategy and acquiring political power, while light’s specializes in manipulating people so they willingly do what he wants (Lelouch has geass so he can “cheat” in this aspect and control anyone he sees for free)
@@gr8b8m85 i mean to be fair if they are in very different situations i dont know how light would handle himself in the middle of a war
I can't see a scenario where Light beats Lelouch. Lelouch's ability to see through the minutiae of an opponent's plan surpasses even L's.
youre the only channel that appreaciates light. i love you
No, the kid was not smarter, it was literally just the kid bossing Ryuk around (which would have never happened in the original)
Aaron Bell Light bossed Ryuk around plenty in the original.
@@dealphawolf Ryuk followed light because he was interested in what he was doing. If he didn't find Light intriguing he wouldn't have taken that.
Nick Elakon true. you can make an argument that that would be the same in this case. This kid had all the right stuff to be great and though it was short lived, Ryuk was entertained and interested in his plan as well
It was a trade for apples no different than when Ryun found all of the hidden apples in lights room so that he could start feeding him again

It's true .they did wrong to light just to end the death note
Light in my opinion, was a brilliant mastermind of a genius visionary one.
Now having read it, my thought on Minoru is that he was not a genius, nor an idiot too. One thing for certain, he was more like clever. Although it was too bad they had to add another rule so sudden.
It physically hurt me when I saw Minoru on the ground with the cash in his hand. He didn’t deserve it.
