I know she is not mine but I try to implement as much of Tina Bryson's and Dan Siegel's work when I'm with my 4 year old granddaughter. Patience, Understanding and Empathy is key. I can manage my own emotions as I'm an adult and am not threatened by her anger or strong distressing emotions and understanding her emotional state is incredibly soothing for her and is soothing my own inner child too. So, we are both receiving the 4 S's. Dr. Gabor Mate has some incredibly useful material also. The increase in depression (depressing/pushing down real feelings) and anxiety, mood disorders and addiction is growing at an alarming rate and it begins in the first few years of life I believe. I've started writing my book "Home is where the Harm is" (only a temporary title) as the first time we ever feel shame, blame, humiliation, punishment, being ignored, maybe smacked, etc. is with our family of origin or other caregivers in the first few years of life. I love Tina's work.
I wish I had known all this a very long time ago. I wish my Mum had known this too.

I wish there were more examples for toddler ages. Instead of saying we can adjust our language giving an example of what that adjustment looks like. I found the book great for kids 4+ but for younger toddlers like 2-3 I felt unsure of how to apply beyond connection

My 3 year old. Trying to switch over to doing these things and talking to him instead of yelling. My problem Is he is so hyper that I cant hold his attention for 5 seconds half the time. Sometimes we can talk. Sometimes he just wont stop moving or looking around. Pretty fast he doesnt even seem to remember what I'm talking about and I lose the chance. Very frustrating to me and probably why I started yelling because it actually gets/holds his attention. What do I do? Lol

      Totally frustrating, right?!!
      Familiar.
It sounds like he's still *expecting the yelling*,
and has "fight or flight" kinda going on.
Have you tried just holding your hands out, low, open, welcoming,
      so he can *see*
      very literally
how much you would love for him to "come into you"
even if he's screaming or crying,
      rather than yell at him,
      and *see* and believe
that you really won't reject him & his scary, overwhelming feelings?
It took my kids a long time (like 8 minutes in the beginning!!)
      of me holding them
(and me feeling a bit of my own frustration/panic ease into grace)
before their ears would even open up!!!
I also started telling them I regretted yelling,
which helped them believe that I was changing tactics.
Now they know I'm safe to turn to, they only need a minute
before they can hear again... and learn love.

I'm not done reading the book yet...and are eager to learn how to discipline a 20 month old...ok yes I connect, and distract with a new activity, but the hitting is STILL happening (she hits me when she feels ignored or when she doesn't get her wayI understand it wont work over night...but am I teaching wrong? So far I've only read about teens and 4/5 yr old discipline...

Something tells me you're here because you might not quite be able to know the difference between annoying and warm and professional. Kids need parents that can tell these differences.
