My mission here at Zulu Lessons with Thando is to help people who are serious about learning isiZulu to speak it fluently.

My X comes out of the right jaw!
That's interesting. I really can't say it with my right jaw! Thank you for letting me know! xx
Me too!
That's okay, mine too
Oh wow really. Nothing comes out when I do that lol
Mine, too! I can't do it with my left at all LOL
I am a white, Afrikaans South African and I can only speak Afrikaans and English. Its happened so many times that someone said something to me in their native African language and I couldn't understand them. I want to learn Zulu so that I can communicate to more South Africans in their native language and get closer to the other cultures of our country. I am 16 now so hopefully by the time I enter the workforce I'll be able to speak fluent Zulu and maybe start learning other African languages as well. Formal lessons are a bit expensive so thank you so much for these videos, they are extremely helpfull albeit it the clicks are more difficult than I thought they would be😅
I believe you will do well with this. Don't get stuck on the sounds, continue with the other lesson videos, and keep coming back to this to work on the sounds that you find challenging a few minutes each week. Just note where you left off. And subscribe to my email list on my website, you will get more notes.
Siyabonga kakhulu. I'm a Namibian and really likes isiZulu a lot, can't wait to learn it. I understand a few words through watching the soapies.
Iʼm fascinated about this incredible language. I will try to learn it, good luck with your channel!!!
Thank you Luca (Ngiyabonga Luca).
I'm so grateful for this! I've wanted to learn Zulu all my life. These lessons are amazing!
Hello,
I am a Spanish speaker here in the US, and I have a friend who speaks Zulu in South Africa. He sent me this video to explain how the clicks work.
In listening to this, it’s now giving me a better understanding of how to make my beatbox sounds for my music.
And because of this, I am now more motivated to want to learn Zulu.
Definitely explore this in a musical context it may bring joy to you as well, and thank you shalom, peace.
Sawubona Leo, that is very interesting to hear. And I'm glad this lesson is helpful to you.
This is difficult😂 I've been using English my whole life so I didn't know we can make those sounds with our mouth
😂😂😂😂😂
I feel you. I've been practicing for a while, I think I've got the 'c' and 'x' down pretty good, but I still worry if I'm gonna spit or gag 😅
@@rozuhleetuh6180 😂😂😂Apologies!!! but that's funny! Just a tip, swallow first before you attempt it. It's not easy though, I understand.
My clicks are all over the place. 😂 I don’t even think I can hear them!
But I’m not going to give up!!
I'm simply fascinated and truly smitten by the clicks! The clicks are what ultimately inspired me to lean the language! Love it!
Hi Tee, I do like the clicking too, I must say. Enjoy your lessons.
Yep. That is what pushed me to learn it as well. Took me 3 months to get all 3.
I'm also cheating and learning some Xhosa too
My mom and ugogo come from South Africa and my mom came to America when she was 9 and still speaks the language and I told my grandma I want to learn Zulu so I can be bilingual like my ugogo Esther And mama and I can speak it with them. I learned a small amount of Zulu from my ugogo and I want to continue learning more Zulu but it was hard to because I could only call my grandma for 15 minutes when I was locked up. I had to hand write everything what she said so it was hard. Now I am out and I am thankful that I can actually learn Zulu a lot easily. Thank you
You are most welcome!
Have you ever been to South Africa ntwan?
The best isiZulu teacher on YT! Living and loving it.
Ngiyabonga! (Thank you!)
Siyabonga kakhulu. I'm a Namibian and really likes isiZulu a lot. I can't wait to learn it. I understand a few words through watching soapies.
Sawubona. Oh that's wonderful to hear. I hope the lessons are helpful to you.
@@ZuluLessonswithThando They are very helpful indeed. Keep up the good work!
Sawubona! Which soapies are you watching? i want to watch them to improve my isiZulu. Also looking for good isiZulu films

It is like 2 people speaking. very challenging. Congrats sister for being a Zulu.
Just subscribed to you. From Chicago, USA and just fell im love with isiZulu.
This is going to require some practice!!!!! I'm speechless😳🤣
Thank you Devin. It's going to be fun. If you have any questions, not understanding something, just comment.
my X comes out of the right jaw--I am a native English speaker form the United States. Your videos are SO helpful!!
My husband is the same. His comes from the right. my children's x comes from the left.
Practice saying it with words. It gives really good exercise.

You are a very good teacher. I need to learn Zulu to enhance my gospel singing ministry here in South- Africa

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK yOU! I have tried to study so many of the languages from the GREAT continent. Twi Ga, Amharic and Swahili but your language is the prettiest and I am studying hard with you to learn. I hope to call you and talk with you in your language, soon! Thank you, MY BEAUTIFUL SISTER!
One day I'll be like you. I'm' working on kiSwahili right now.
I just heard you recently sing “Sawubona!!” You have an outstanding voice. Do you sing professionally? If not you should. You’re a great singer, Seriously.
Oh G.M. Ngiyabonga. Those are generous words.
You a great teacher wow! I thoughts Xhosa has more clicks but I am glad to find out Zulu also has alot of clicks so your lesson is helping me with my Xhosa learning. I want to learn both Zulu and Xhosa
Ngiyabonga Rodney. They both have the same clicks. However, isiXhosa uses clicks more often than in isiZulu. All the best with your lessons.
@@ZuluLessonswithThando appreciate your message thank you :)
Im not even learning this language i just find it really interresting.
Great video Thando! Thank you for these lessons. One of my concerns with Nozulu not growing up in KZN was him not speaking isiZulu as a first language, you've got lifetime subscribers in us for sure 😘
Thank you Phaka! Will look out for our future king. More videos to come!
Unjani mfundisi. I have been following your isizulu teachings and i have seen that most words are similar my mother most african words we use in African countries. You are doing a great job, ngiyabonga kakhulu.
Sawubona Nash, ngiyaphila. Wena? Yes, you're right. The Nguni languages are so similar. Sort of like what you find with Romance languages. Which is great because it means it won't be so hard to learn each other's languages. What languages do you speak?
Ngiyaphila. I speak nyanja and bemba from northen and eastern Zambia. Unkkulunkhulu akubusise.
Oh, you are truly a neighbour. In some upcoming videos, I mention Zambia. We visited there 6 years ago and had an amazing time. We want to go back. Nawe mfowethu, INkosi Ikubusise.

Ngiyabonga, Thando!
Sawubona Thando. Awesome video! You're absolutely right, this definitely needed a separate lesson. My throat feels tired from the workout it just got. Ngiyabonga Kakhulu for the lessons; I remember in Durban my preschool had Zulu as part of the curriculum, but then it got cut. I missed it; I much preferred it to learning Afrikaans. Sala gahle!
OH, I'm so glad you are getting a chance to learn isiZulu now!!!
I began learning yesterday, your videos are so helpful!
Me I starting today 😄😄
@@fabricemwandopaul1740 good luck!
thanks for this lesson.ngiyajabula kakhulu
Thanks for amazing video!❤️
My tongue hurt from pronouncing these sounds, but I think I'm getting hang of it. The combination with "G" seems to be the hardest to pronounce for me, and I also struggle with words where there are 2 clicks one after another. 😅
You're welcome. Yes, the ones with a G are the deepest click sounds. And thus require the tongue to work harder. I believe you will master it over time. Don't rush yourself. Also, you can always go straight to the point of the video you want to practice each day. That way, you don't make your jaw and tongue tired.
@@ZuluLessonswithThando thank you for advise! I will try to practice a bit everyday to learn this amazing language!
Yesterday was great I was learning with you and today I can say am really learning a lot
Great teacher, thank you!
Im African American and we used to always click as a child, didnt know why, later found out we are Zulus stolen during slave trade.
It is so amazing to hear how we get that spiritual pull, leading us to our home. even if we didn't know where home was. Thank you for sharing that with me.
Ngiyabonga Thisha, sho inkinka
😂😂😂😂 I love your sense of humor at the end ❤❤❤
Thando you are freaking great at teaching. Good job!!
You’re welcome!!! Ngiyabonga 🙌🏾
So enjoying your videos. Thank you so much Thando. Keep them coming!!
+Denise Zzz Glad you’re enjoying the lessons Denise. It will get more interesting from this coming week. 💕
In the end is all sounded the same to me. Anyways, ngiyabonga kakhulu for teaching us! :)
Strange. Listen to it slowly, with no other noise, maybe wear headphones. you'll see the sounds have slight yet significant differences.
Ok new subie . I am from Gabon ( Central Africa ) but I feel like I was South African in my previous life 🥰🌞
I would love to visit your country one day. I know it will happen. Enjoy the lessons. (ps, I think everyone was Zulu! lol)
Hahaha that was hilarious ..for me I feel they are my brothers and sisters. ..much love from Kenya
@@rispergeke4181 hehehehe true, we are brothers and sisters.
Hello i do zulu at school and struggle a bit but with your help i get it.
Glad to hear that.
Ngiyabonga TU . CLICKS ARE HARD , will keep trying 😂
Keep working on it. You will get them.
This video was incredibly well made. I am so thankful
What I found the most challenging is to understand the translations. I have a c2 level in English but there were some words I didn't know, and others that were so specific I couldn't imagine ever needing them.
Another awesome lesson. The kids and I are having so much fun learning together. Thank you
I'm so glad. I truly appreciate the feedback.
thank you so much
I have been able to pronounce “Q” and “X” conveniently. It’s the “C” that I have trouble with. English is the second language where I live. I can say I have been able to learn these clicks with passion… but still trying to get my “C” right though! ❤
I can do the C and the Q very well, but I can't do the X for the life of me!! 😭
What sound do you hear when you lay your tongue flat behind your top front teeth and the pallate? It's almost like the clock sound.
For me, it almost sounds like the sound of a person could make in while kissing.
That’s all that comes to mind.
This was actually easy! :D
SO glad to hear that!
This is a workout for your face, my mouth hurts trying to contort it like this! 😂🤣
hehehehe!!!! yeah. It was for me too. But you must know that we actually don't use clicks every time we speak.
Yes, I don't always hear clicks as often as I would think when I've heard isiZulu dialogue in films and series, for example. And how do you whisper the clicks?! Haha.
I live in Spain and had insomnia last night, I was trying to repeat this with the window open at midnight, goodness knows what the neighbours thought I was doing! 😂😂
@@SkepticalTeacher haha!!!! That's so funny! (Kuyahlekisa loko!)
@@ZuluLessonswithThando How do you mean that _"we don't use it every time"_ ? Is it optional or can it be replaced by non-click sounds?
Love your videos "Ndlovukasi" I'm African American and I've been facinated with Zulu culture especially the warrior culture lol I've been teaching myself to speak basic Zulu and Xhosa for a little while now and I love it but my clicks are not quite there yet especially the "Q" clicks. It's a bit of a struggle but I'm still trying
You'll get there Mfowethu. Ngiyabonga for the kind words. Keep at it. Get a tutor maybe for a couple of lessons or even one for the clicks. Then continue again on your own. Do you have books? And a dictionary? Troll Zulu Twitter for and go to ilanganews.co.za/ and isolezwe news online. Listen to ukhozi fm and mhlobo wenene fm (isiXhosa) online. Watch Thenjiwe Comedy, Thenjiwe TV, and Wendy Gumede here on youtube.
@@ZuluLessonswithThando wow "Ngiyabonga" "udadewethu" for the encouragement. 😁😁😁. I usually use google translation and UA-cam videos and some friends I've met on facebook from South Africa and Swaziland. When I talk to them sometimes and use the little Zulu I know they think Im from South Africa and not Amerikkka. Lol but they laugh when on some words that requires a click I put too much effort into it but it's because they're showing love and even try to help me with the language lol. I'm glad you have me other sources to watch to learn Zulu Language. The original main source I used before google was the "Shaka Zulu" miniseries and for Xhosa it was "Black Panther".( I even have a Black Panther suit). But I will definitely be looking more into the information you gave me. Oh by they way I just subscribed to your channel. 😁😁

I'm enjoying your lessons so far. Keep up the good content. I hope to surprise my friend by speaking some Zulu soon. Hopefully I'll get to go use some Zulu some time out in Africa as well. Perhaps later I'll do a Zulu language challenge and try to up my abilities in a particular period of time. I don't know if you would like to be involved in such a video, but I'll let you know! Ngiyabonga!
Let me know what it will be about and I will try to make time to join. Thank you John.
I wonder how this is going... 😁
oh my, this is harder than i thought 😅
Lol. Don't try to master it all at once. Take it in bite-sizes. As you continue with the other video lessons, you will find yourself saying the different sounds quite easily.
Amazing work Thando, it’s beautiful, I’m just interested in the Q Sounds, I hope i get them right

Sawubona. Lol, I understand. You will get it with time though. Continue with the other videos and you can keep practicing the sounds.
is good to see i kown zlul🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
like zlul now
So the Q and the Gq has been a thorn in my side since I started this journey… any tips on how to make it a little clearer especially since popping my tongue isn’t something I do on the regular any help is appreciated.
Sawubona Robert. It really comes down to playing around with the positioning of your tongue on the roof of your mouth. The more detailed videos on sounds will be posted around the end of October, for members only, of course. But don't wait for that: make your tongue pointy, lift it to the rough part of the palate, stiffen the rest of the tongue, in the middle, length wise, then pop. If you do not make your tongue pointy, this won't come out correctly.
Waal lovely how i was supprised with this word same meaning different spellings but same sound Nxakanxaka in shona we say nyakanyaka which means disorder again ,so i am getting this one straight away!!!!!!
You'll be pleased to learn this: We also use the same word.
Anyone else reading the isiZulu comments outloud for practice? lol
Im polish and I it was a lot of fun to practice, tomorrow I will show of to my SA friend hahah
Oh that is so good to hear that Krzystof!
Thank you ❤️😭!
Ngiyabonga
you can be an isizulu teacher
I’m a little confused… What part of my tongue should I be using to make the Q? I have the others pretty well, but the Q is the trickiest one for me.
Sawubona. The tip of your tongue should touch the ribbed part of your palate (roof of your mouth).
This is eritrean and ethiopian alphabet

Oh wow!!
How do you speak with zulu clicks when you have near to you someone that sleeps and you won't awake him?
YOu don't speak, you sleep. haha! Also, we actually don't speak don't many clicks in a day.

@@mauriceeddysonvolcy4428 Noted. I will work on this on future lessons. Thank you.
Hi
🤗
I Like you
Are there any alternative words for these click words?
No. But you shouldn't spend too much time on them. learn other things and keep coming back to the clicks to practice.
I've more or less managed to pronounce the sounds on their own, but I can't figure out how to use them in words. Like, my tongue just stumbles. The C class is fine, but the X and Q are hard, especially when there's a i sound before. I just can't make it flow. Will keep practicing!
Keep working on it Alexa. You will get it. Don't only focus on it. Work on acquiring vocabulary and work on the grammar. The more you perfect the other sounds, you will find yourself making the x and q better as well. Give it time.
How do you do the x click sound when some (or all) of your back teeth are missing on the side that you used to use for clicks? What do you use as "replacement sound" then?
With one jaw. It might be the left or the right, depends on the person. But I use my left most of the time. Don't clench your teeth. There should be a small gap between your top and bottom jaw.

Even in Kenya, if you say Nxa, it is very rude. I always wondered where it came from since there's no spelling for it in Swahili. Now I know.
It's also the only one I can pronounce😂
lol
you are rude
@@coachfiks ??? How? Who? To whom?
Also wondering what's going on 🤷🏽♀️
I always thought I would have a good phoneme distinction hearing but this sounds all seem exactly the same to me.
Maybe the c I can pronounce but the others I can't distinguish. And my tongue is not that fast and movable
It should come with practice. I took a Zulu module in university, and I had to do orals. It seemed apsolutely impossible, but over time with practicing the speech over and over again I started to be able to speak faster and form words.
You have an amazing skin sisi how do you maintain it?
Umdali (the Creator), Amanzi (water), Izithelo (plants), neShea Butter! (ngiyabonga Limpho)
Good job but where can find Zulu dictionary.
Try Oxford University Press
Why do they sound alike apart from the c.. I don’t get the difference with q and x.
Is there a writing system for zulu?
Good question Son Goku
Have you actually seen the video or you didn't pay attention to the letters combination. This unique combination is actually their writing system.
@@polightshakka304 I didn't mean that. What you are talking about is alphabet. And writing system is how the letters look. In video alphabet was taught with latin writing system.
@@mangapedia5564 oh I got You. I've just learnt from you that there is no writing system in English since English Spelling is also based on Latin Alphabet.
Yes,there's a writing system of Southern African indigenous languages called 'Isibheqe sohlamvu' in isiZulu .It has visual logic originating in traditional arts.
I've been practicing it for a month now
my tongue is very rude👅no matter how hard i try🤒
Keep trying, but don't focus on it too much. Watch and learn from the other videos, the clicks will come with time.

I kept trying but I'm still not being able to pronounce them . My gosh🙄🙄 but I like this language.
From D.R.CONGO
You will soon. Keep at it. Thank you.
Can the x sound be made with both sides of mouth?
I doubt it Dade. I can only make it with one side at a time.
Managed "c" and "q" but having a bit of a problem with "x".
Don't give up, keep coming back to it every now and again.
Do you offer private lessons?
Sawubona Douglas, yebo, I do. 1 hour is R350.
I was born in america but my roots are in Africa, so most of these sounds are easy for me..
It's funny how Black people suck their teeth all over the world (Africa, Jamaica, America etc) & it basically means the same thing for all of us
Yep. There's another one we do where we really suck our teeth. It's close to the Nigerian one. We are one. Can never be separated by the oceans or borders.

I keep trying to practice the click sounds, but I can only get the 'q' click sound right, and the 'c' click sound somewhat okay, but I can't get the 'x' pronounced right. Would Zulu speakers still understand me if I don't pronounce the click sounds the right way?
Sawubona Fabian, yebo, we would still understand you. The ones that I would advise to work on the most are the hl and dl sounds and all their variations. Those are the ones that actually need more work.
For me it's the q I can't get correct, it's kind of frustrating, but I'm still trying.
I'm Sudanese My mother tongue is Arabic When I was knocking myself out trying to say that sounds I feel like I lost my tongue and got thirsty
They are so difficult to me saying them
Keep trying Siad.
I use my right jaw for X
Difficult with the left one😅😅
My friend is also the same as you. I ALWAYS use the left.
ARMY
😩 I have a lot to learn
Q is so hard
But don't worry about it. You'll get it one day. Focus on learning other things for now. And keep coming back to the sounds that you are struggling with.
This is really tough for me
Give yourself time. You will get it. Don't get stuck on it. Continue working on other lessons, and keep coming back to the parts that are troubling you here.
I don’t know why but I’ve been practicing all the letters from this video and the other one like non stop for the last few days and I’ve gotten all of them down pretty well but the “gc” “gq” and “gx” for some reason I’m having so much trouble with those. But as soon as I add the n like for “ngq” I can say it just fine. Help me! 🥺
the 'gc' try to press the tip of your tongue to the palette. The 'gq' pops, with the tip of your tongue on the ribbed part of your palette. 'gx' is with your jaw, but a little stronger than the stand alone 'x'. I hope this helps. Also, don't get stuck here. Keep practicing with the other videos and you will find yourself doing it soon.
