The range of sound this instrument can make is unbelievable, and I'm convinced anyone who can play something this complex THIS well must be some kind of wizard.
I love the Gurdy because of that ability, it both allows a mimic like effect where if you know what you're doing you can play just about any song, and secondly you can create music from such a wide variety of genres
I watched a vid on its history and I think it had to do with the instrument spreading to the lower classes, and, as you can imagine, those without the rescorcrs to maintain the instruments would be left with lopesided wheels and buzzer strings with the wrong amount of tension. Basically it spread from the church to lower classes then classisum happened.
Added to the points others mentioned here, the hurdy gurdy fell into disfavour because it's an utter pain to maintain and prepare for play, compared to comparable instruments like the lute, aud, harp and so on. The main strings can't rub directly onto the wheel; they must be jacketed in cotton treated with rosin. Too much rosin, and the strings don't "grab" the wheel for a good sound; not enough, and they screech instead of droning harmoniously. And that's just setting it up to start playing. By contrast, rosin on a violin's bowstring lasts a long time, and one needs only to rub in a little more before sitting down to play. That said, it's totally worth the effort, IMHO.
Today is the first day I learned about this instrument!! And I'm in love with the sound. I've never in my life heard such a varied range of sounds from a single instrument. Beautiful..very beautiful.
Everyone is talking about how good the instrument is, I wanna just thank Guilhem. That song was amazing, I only wish i could write music half as well as he can. Guilhem, please keep making more Hurdy Gurdy videos!!
Superbe composition.
Mr. Guilhem Desq, I have stumbled onto another one of your wonderful videos. Just in case you you aren't aware of this, you are sooo very special and very gifted sir. Please continue to make these videos showing your absolute virtuosity of your instrument. It is a joy to watch your really cool technique and listen to your musical artistry.
At the first bird like screech I was convinced a small animal had decided to empty its lungs in the middle of your recording. I was wondering why you didn't look perturbed by it, then the camera panned down and showed the instrument making it again, on purpose! I said out loud, "No way!" We have invented nothing like this today. I'm so glad people still play it!!🙏
don't get me wrong, what he does with it is awesome and he's most likely among the best players of this instrument, but what he does, you do with a digital setup and a guitar as well, and THERE IS digital treatment of the sound on this track, he register & playback loops, added reverbs, among other things. But it's not as impressive because everyone can play the guitar with little effort, this, is another story, and a very beautiful music :)
I honestly don't know what to say im blown away, I first heard you do cowboys from hell and realized you was talanted bt listened to more and was amazed you are truly as deep as the instrument you play
Merci!!
I've been hoping to hear more about purchasing your album - your work is mesmerizing, and frankly - since I first heard your song La Libellule, I cannot get it off my mind. I am enchanted!
I'm literally holding back tears. What an artist. Dude when you tour this new album please come to Toronto, Canada. I bet your live performances are sublime.
i notice that quickly too but i think its the piece of tape or something he moves on the second back string that is being rubbed against by the spin wheel to make that sound like rubber squeak
You are a pioneer sir. I love it individuals take the past and modernize it. As a designer and artist I tend to embrace the past for what it is and spin it on its head. I can't tell how many times your score has inspired my paintings as a Texas based Artist taking traditional impressionism and bringing it up to speed with our modern world. Your work is truly an inspiration. Thank you
Man you really put emotions in your art, thank you to share your feelings like that :) this song makes me dream. You are really creating a whole new landscape to the Hurdy. Please keep it up! Love and light
Reminds me of some of DubFX's presentations where he performed on the street. He made his vocals on the spot for display purposes and then combined them to make music right then and there. This carries that same interest in how its presented. Very well done!
Oh that's incredible to witness your mind, emotion and body lost within creation with this instrument/ lover. Of yours. I applaud you. Just just absolute skill
I love this song and this instrument! Where else can u find the sounds of ten different instruments all wrapped up perfectly in to just one instrument that fits in ur lap.
Every time I listen to this song I just go into a place of zen and happiness. If I could, I would dance to this at my wedding. Thank you for sharing your talent and making the hurdy gurdy more beautiful than it already is
Instruments that drone like the traditional Hardy Gordy or the Bagpipes are Not to my taste but this is incredible, entrancing, inspiring, and just simply wonderful. The adaptions and modernisation that have been made to this instrument are inspired. Absolute genius.

Strange tune, strange and different. Probably also one of the most beautiful ones I have heard. I love it. I could listen to this for days. I'd buy an album from you if you produced one.
Cyberassassin44 Thank you a lot! I will release something in solo before 2016 I hope. At the moment I am working on my band album, you can check it right here (news and preorder). www.ulule.com/arcane-alchemists/

not a wizard, a bard.

Bravo after reading a few comments I believe you topped anything I could say instrument is as amazing as its player
@@kilorethiw Multiclass!

It sounds amazing, the high notes sometimes sound like birds, sometimes like flutes. Damn this is an amazing instrument.
If course it is an amazing instrument, but let's say the guy who's turning the crank is pretty amazing too

with the amount of range that this instrument is capable of, I wonder why it ever faded into obscurity in the first place
Wars.

Put it simply, humans are a stupid species. Very very dumb, monumentally stupid of epic proportions.
@@leonrafe8513 that's makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the info!

This is one of the most satisfying sounds I have ever heard.
I've watched this at least 50x, and this video never gets old. Solid.
It's almost like that is not a real musical instrument. Very hypnotic to watch and listen.
A transfer of pure positive energy...
Today is the first day I learned about this instrument!! And I'm in love with the sound. I've never in my life heard such a varied range of sounds from a single instrument. Beautiful..very beautiful.
Magnifique... Quel talent!
This song really takes me away to a happy space. I get so stuck. I wish it was longer.

One of the most enchanting pieces I've heard in a long time. Thank you for sharing!
By far THE BEST Hurdy Gurdy I've heard yet!
The range of sounds this instrument can make is EXACTLY why I call it, "The Synthesizer's Great-Great-Grandma."
I've been hoping to hear more about purchasing your album - your work is mesmerizing, and frankly - since I first heard your song La Libellule, I cannot get it off my mind. I am enchanted!

This is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard.. Thank you.
A real master of Gurdy... Sick skills, beautiful instrument!
Awesome song and all, but I can't help but hear rubber duckies at some parts of the song. Not bad but makes me smile a bit :D
Thienquan Pham You just ruined the song for me lol.
I didn't know what you meant until the rubber duckies kicked in and I was like WTF?! O_O
i think you are supposed to. it does sound like loons or some other bird
i notice that quickly too but i think its the piece of tape or something he moves on the second back string that is being rubbed against by the spin wheel to make that sound like rubber squeak
I was thinking it sounded like it had rat vocalists or something
very inspiring! it sounds from another world. thank you.. such a crazy instrument and player...
Wow. This is superb. Incredibly inventive use of the Hurdy Gurdy. Thanks for posting.
