    So jealous of your shelves, and all the wonderful authors you've met! Your books are now on my end table, I'm dipping in and out. Such an interesting read. I don't know you personally, obviously, but I've been watching so long that I feel like I do, and it's such a kick to see your name when I pick them up.
    Fun story: I live about 5 minutes from JCO, and years went to see her talk (at a now defunct Borders) when she released The Gravedigger's Daughter. I was trying to break into publishing at the time (a long time ago!) and for motivation I asked her to write "You really are a writer" on my copy with her signature. She capitalized and underlined YOU ARE. I treasured this...Years later, multi published by PRH, I went to hear her speak again and along with other books of hers I brought my The Gravedigger's Daughter copy, showing her the signature and telling her I'd finally made it. She was so sweet to me, and under the previous signature she wrote, "You see?" :) ❤

    The Waves is my favourite Virginia Woolf novel. I love that you have such a variety of copies. You have a really nice place and it is nice that your bookshelves are very present, but don’t overpower the space. I love that you own a copy of Record Time which is a lovely story. Also, you are really lucky to have an author dedicate a book to you what a special thing to have happen. I really enjoyed your bookshelf tour and it is so sweet you and your husband read to each other.

    Lovely collection. I don't have a lot of space in my home but recently started at a bookstore so I've been getting a lot. My collection is a bit all over the place but I like to think that for me my library is an ever changing thing. My favorites and hard to find editions will stay on my shelf most others will be given away or donated so they find a new home. I really love giving books to people

    That's a nice library, Eric: Use it in good health. Personally, most of my library now is in Kindle but I think honestly I prefer that at this stage in life. Respecting some of your author stories, I too had some of those once, when I was younger. My first writing teacher, the National Book Award winner, Ray Carver, never dedicated anything to me. In fact I believe he thought I was a bit of a punk, but no more of that. A classmate of mine, tho, Jay, wrote a scene in his big novel, Bright Lights, Big City, wherein I'm sure I saw myself, but who knows. I never asked him and we did have things in common once. Since then life has taken us different places, but I think I understand why you feel really good about seeing that dedication - enjoy! and thx.

    We just added very nice built-ins in my wife’s artist studio room, mainly for art books, oversized books, but also to hopefully pull in some of my books from many, many shelves and cases I have set up in our garage. It’s not the ideal place for books, but it’s the only viable space. The books have been there for three years now, and seem to be holding up well.

    Love your shelves and reading nook! Lovely. I've been culling books my entire reading life. I am surrounded by my books at my reading and writing nook. I tried so hard to get into Kindle but I am so old school. I enjoy a tactile reading experience. I also move apartments a great deal (mainly due to ever increasing rent right across Sydney). So my next move is going to be smaller and tighter and facing the culling problem is for me an emotional as well as physical exhaustive experience.

    I watched Born Yesterday last summer and didn't know it was the movie your old opening was from! I was like oh my gosh! Judy Holliday was such a radiant actress!
    I have stacks of books on my floor right now... I too struggle with finding more space for what I acquire. I do have some wall space I can put shelves but there are certain parts of my room I like being open and to be able to hang posters but I might have to cave and put new shelves there.

    I constantly have to think about where books go. I always ask myself " will I read this book again?". If no , it deserves a new home.
    I do keep my favourite books. 🥰
    I used to have books in one room that were tbr. In another, that were read, but I realised I liked to keep all my vintage editions together or my Oxford Univ Press together ( you get the picture, I'm sure). So a reshuffle was required.

I would grab something to stand on to get my books from top shelf. My one book shelf is arranged in the alphabetical order of Authors, and another in my study on my reference and favorite ones and on my desk is the two recent ones by you with notes around it. You need to keep yours in the living room right in the centre or above/below your favorite photo frame in this study of yours.

    I am equally guilty of not reading Steinbeck yet even though I have had his book for years! I hope to read it soon. This was such a perfect BookTour. Like, I am glad you didn’t go around showing each and every book and rather took us through it like you were having a conversation or introducing your shelves to a guest at your house (other Booktubers take note, please). Just one question- how often do you dust or clean your shelves? In India, it’s impossible to keep books naked on the shelves without a layer of thick dust settling on it in a week’s time or so. :/

    Have you come across the Sapien book shelves? Very cool design and perfect for limited space. I have 4 of them in my apartment. Generally I hate getting rid of books but have to do a mass cull every 6 months in order to not tip into hoarder territory. Most I take to the Library. Then usually there’s always one or two I regret or forget getting rid of and so of course buy again and the cycle repeats

    • @EricKarlAnderson
      @EricKarlAnderson  Рік тому +1

      It took me a while to get into it as well. I think it can feel alienating at first because it has a specific structure and highly poetic language that all the characters can feel the same but the more you read it and follow their lives the more their personalities come out and you might feel more emotionally invested in their lives and journey - or, at least, I did. So I’d say give it another try but I know it’s not a book for everyone.

    I’m sorry but I cringed at the sight of the Fitzcarraldos in the bathroom - won’t they gradually swell up with the humidity and start growing mould? The only books I manage to unhaul are either duplicates or dnfs so like you I am struggling to find room for myself among the book piles!

    Nice! My books are sorted by language. I read in 5 langages.(mostly Portuguese, English and Dutch, and the odd ones in Spanish and French). Do you read in other languages?
    I don´t have many books, I tend to hand them down and I read a lot from public libraries.
    I do have some about actors, like biographies and interviews. I love movies, but learning about Hollywood history was quite enraging.. I´ll choose British or Canadian made over Hollywood any time.

    Reassuring to see that the universal rule that books acquired will always grow to be 125% of available shelf space also applies to someone as organised as Eric too!

  • @hanffd
    @hanffd Рік тому

    Thank you so much for the generous tour of your book shelves. I totally identify with your book storage challenges. My books are organized mostly by country of origin and then, within that, alphabetical by author's surname. I also have shelves reserved for: fantasy/fairytale; biography; literary criticism; books about books; short stories; and poetry. I also have books organized by collections (e.g. Fitzcarraldo; Vintage; Europa; etc). My QUESTION to you, Eric, is as follows: Do you think it is a bad idea to store books in piles? In order to maintain alpha organization of books on my shelves, but also to accommodate the fact that most of my bookcases contain shelves of varying heights, I have stored many of my taller books in horizontal piles next to the 'shorter' upright books. I worry that this might be bad for the books. What do you think?

    • @EricKarlAnderson
      @EricKarlAnderson  Рік тому

      Thank you! And I don’t think that’s bad for the books. As long as they aren’t damaged. The more books that can be fit in the better! 😊📚📚📚
