    Always good to hear this man share his experience. As a complete DIY FILMmaker myself I have a lot of resentment for executives and producers I've worked with in the past. I understand they are people but their culture that they've created is a massive barrier to productive creation. It SEEMS, for the most part, "Do what I say, not what I do." They will nickle-and-dime you to the cheapest rate while having a helicopter fly in Starbucks for their third afternoon break. Not saying they all do that but I've seen enough to make my blood boil on sets.

    • @Theomite
      @Theomite 3 роки тому +10

      The Private Sector imported most of the aristocratic mental sensibilities that were purged from pop culture in the wake of the Revolutionary War. So these executives are inheritors of a culture where money makes the class, not the breeding, and the class requires a certain egomania for self-esteem. So they see that helicopter ride as necessary to embody and telegraph their worth while the people on set must use less because they are lesser; if they weren't, they'd be in his profession.

    The most surprising part of this interview was that a Hollywood studio not just considered but even went through with consulting someone whose relationship with and understanding of money is much more grounded in reality in contrast to the suits. There's no doubt in my mind that every big Hollywood studio production could save at least 10 to 25 percent on their budget.

  • @redearedslider2322
    @redearedslider2322 3 роки тому +22

    Saving on gift baskets and hotels is a fine, but you need to pay the crew union rates, feed the crew well, have a zero screaming policy
    and have a safe working environment. Proper pre production time, location scouting, and as few location moves as possible will save money.

    • @bighands69
      @bighands69 3 роки тому +10

      Production crew fees are not what makes productions expensive.

    • @redearedslider2322
      @redearedslider2322 3 роки тому +7

      Agreed. I was just saying that producers should treat the crew well with above scale rates, shorter hours and a proper turn around from small budgets to large budgets. . I have worked on shows that stepped over dollars to pick up pennies due to poor planning and if you add that to not treating the crew well it will likely lead to a bad outcome and safety issues.

    • @PartanBree
      @PartanBree Рік тому

      Yes, and in the current context of the union strikes, it's kind of sickening to see studios trying to save money by not paying the people who actually make the movies properly, while spending £5k on a gift basket for a star or flying people around on private jets. Oh, your star actors won't perform well if they're not treated right? Well neither will your supporting actors, your extras, your writers, your stunt performers. And treating somebody right doesn't mean wasting money on things nobody actually cares about.

    Hollywood is secretly wanting to spend way less money but make huge profit and I feel like if a studio gives an opportunity to you to make a film successful under a low budget it can be your break. I think since the pandemic, most everything going to streaming, and those that do go theaters only making less than $200mm domestic and the fact that China doesn't like playing ball with American movies playing in their country will nip the tent pole budget significantly.

I say that because everything you said in this interview was everything I learned and observed on the sets, of those big studio productions of which I worked on for years. I ended up choosing the indie film maker route after all of that. Running on fear and fighting on set is not my cup of tea. And I have gotten much farther going the indie way. (Listening to my own gut instinct) I won't put up with grown ups on my set, ranting and fighting in front of everyone like an unruly 13 yr.old brat. COMMON SENSE! YES! But the business side of film is what brings in the money to cater for the cost of making film.
      I know for a fact that editors charge very expensively for their services and they also use very expensive softwares to do their job.
      That money has to come from the business side of film.
      Business requires certain rules or else money gets lost and that is how investors endup loosing money and employees end up not getting paid.

    From listening to him about where the issues were when making savings, it seemed things relating to actors and their contracts are points of concern along with the post-production of these movies. It seems like people who are trying to create wealth such as actors; the public feels as though they deserve or should get all the perks they want. While the production company is searching globally on how to make 20 Mil on a 100 Mil or 200 Mil budget. I have sympathy for these companies and for the actors, no one is having it easy. But the public is unaware of these sorts of problems since people only know the actors and hear them when they scream fire. While production companies are seen as having infinite wealth. Sure production companies have other avenues to make money as well but actors want a part of that money and so there goes a chunk of it that can help you cover the budget. There is a lack of understanding from people for sure.

    Finally got some of my questions answered about why these films cost so much to make! But I'm kind of bewildered by it at the same time. How can the studios be so focused on profit, while at the same time being so wasteful with expenditure? Profit has two components, the in and the out. If you focus only on the in then you're going to make a loss. It's business 101, how are they missing this?!
    They need to get Gordon Ramsay in. Chefs, even at superstar level, are all about preventing waste. There's no question of focusing only on revenue and to hell with expenditure. That's how restaurants go bust.

  • @buzzcrushtrendkill

    The movie industry is still held in Hollywood but it is slowly being decentralized. Major studios are using all the visual effects they can to hold onto the market (working with superhero movies) but it's just a matter of time before that trend fades as well. With production technology becoming affordable and accessible by independent movie makers with streaming and online distribution, the days of big Hollywood will be changing and won't be like it used to be.

    I don't understand why they can't budget, get fresh talent - not indy, just smart - for the medium. Let it rest on the film not politics and actors, not trying to please everyone, no innovation other than creativity. We still talk about the great directors who had nothing and made money in the good ol days. The studio should work like a home base for multiple projects based on innovation without tech. Passion like Coppola if he had to work on a shoestring, they should limit the cash flow to bring the fire out of these people to be creative like a colony of artists in the studios - no vegan catering, rather, peanut butter sandwiches.

      The main thing that needs to happen, but I don't know how it will happen, is for Hollywood, CA to lose its monopoly status as pretty much the only market that can produce high end, high quality films. There should be a "Hollywood" in every major city IMO - Seattle, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, you name it. There have been some cracks happening in that direction in the last couple of decades or so, but for now it's mainly just independent film and still not the huge industry like in L.A. and New York. You can have doctors, lawyers, engineers, and just about every other profession in every city, why not big moviemaking in every market?

    That hat. I wasn’t going to say anything about his hat but others noticed so I guess I’m not alone. With his hair in the back and the hat combined, I cannot imagine this gentleman full of wisdom without a leaf blower doing someone’s yard. He’s not the kind of guy that does yards because he can’t find anything better to do. Rather, he enjoys being outdoors, doesn’t want to deal with “suits” and wants his work day to end (and actually start for himself) when the sun goes down. He looks like the kind of guy who works to live, rather than living to work. The hat or the hair alone don’t give him this vibe. It is only the two together in combination, like Indiana Jones’ hat and his whip in combination. (Except a leaf blower instead.) Thanks for the filmmaking wisdom Mr. Stanley. (p.s. I used to be a professional landscaper and yard mower. I still own a leaf blower. I now do tractor / excavation work and I really enjoy working outdoors so the only thing that has changed is that I now operate larger equipment. Maybe there could be a movie character that is a landscaper that gives amazing advice in as few words as possible in a supporting role to a supporting role. If the character has curly long hair and a golf hat, you’ll know where I got the idea. 👍😊. Now that I think about it, Mr. Miyagi in Karate Kid was a maintenance man / groundskeeper. That movie with perfect sound n high definition pictures.... it came with a cost.
      The number of people directly and indirectly involved in making the film is the reason why the cost is very high...
      Very expensive equipments have to be hired, permits to get shooting locations. Transport cost to move the employees and feeding them.
      Building sets to make sure the story is told in an authentic way.
      Writers of the script have to be paid add actors and extras to that list. Don't forget the editors who are using costly computer software to bring you crazy scenes like the matrix and other films.

    i have been really struggling with pursuing screenwriting when we still have such huge problems locally and abroad and the films cost millions to make. seems pretty cussin decadent, unjustifiably so.
    and most films are not even speaking to us on deep levels like film has the power to do. narrative is so powerful in how it impacts humans. we are a deeply storied species, so if we are doing good with our stories, writing truly meaningful stories, then perhaps it would be justifiable. but most aren’t doing that.

    All the top actors and producers should take regular airlines. And stay in normal hotels.
    Even if protected by private security.
    This will not only make movies much less expensive… it will also bring down those elitist actors down to reality.
    Maybe then they will stop talking down yo the general public. And stop bribing criminal politicians.

      Lol most of the people that bribe politicians are corporations like Amazon and people like Elon musk. Not actors

    Yak yak yak. He dribbles on and on just like everybody in Hollywood they want you think they know so much do they babble on. But if they knew a lot everything they say would be helpful. . This guy turns my brain into oatmeal. Just make a good god dame film but nobody can do the so learn the dribble.

      There does seem to be a correlation.
      I would rather see original King Kong or Rear Window than almost anything in last ten years

    We now know where Hollywood movie studio budget went. Expensive gift baskets and private jets.
    Especially, when it's for the main actors/actresses, directors or producers. Not for emergency case.
    This is where it can create self entitlement and egos for some of these people. Fucking Hollywood, eh? Lol.

    They cost so much in order to pay people properly. unless you re a big name in Hollywood, you’re not going to get big names and really talented pros. Unions exist for a reason. I’d bet that this movie that he’s referring to that cheaped out was a piece of crap. He does have a point but you have to be careful cause a studio will expect it moving forward and tie everyone’s hands.

      Unions do not protect workers in the modern world. Most unions are political parties.

      @@bighands69 they do in my industry. If we didn’t have unions, we’d all be working with no benefits or proper wages. People that work on film Productions without a union are underpaid and overworked.
