Tractor Plowing First Snow of a Minnesota Winter

  • My neck of the woods received what looked like around 14" of the worst heavy wet snow there is. With falling temperatures, I wanted to make certain I had access to get into my slash piles so I can burn them this winter, and so off I went.
    Later I slid off my trail and got good and stuck. I spent the next twenty minutes apprehensively trying to weasel my way out. Eventually I did get free but I blow a hose in on my plow losing directional control in the process.
    I was lucky to get home.
    Backstory.
    What really happened is that I've been busting my butt trying to get as much material together into three slash piles to burn this winter all at once like I did last year.
    The 14" snow we had was nothing but super wet, sticky hard to plow, and slippery. Nobody in their right mind is traveling anywhere and it had drifted over 2' high in many places. In my tractor I fell off the road once on my way over to my slash piles and got stuck in a ditch. I tipped my plow down and used it as a lever to slowly inch my way straight back up and out of the ditch.
    I plowed out several neighbor driveways along the way.
    And so it got dark, but I finally got to my new property and busied myself plowing access to my slash piles.
    There is a bend in my main access road and last winter I thought, gee, wouldn't it be nice if I banked that corner a little so I wouldn't slide to the outside in the winter.
    So this past summer, I did just that and put a slight bank into the corner.
    Tonight while plowing, my plow caught that slight bank and followed it to the low point and I slid down next to a tree that caught itself between my front and rear wheels on the left side. I was unable to back my tractor up with trees behind me and unable to travel forward and to the right because I was stuck. Differential lock. Nope, stuck. Rocking back and forth. Nope, stuck.
    Once I realized I really was stuck, several thoughts ran through may mind:
    I left my chains at home 'cause I don't need them because I'm plowing. D'oh!
    I don't have a key to get into my container to get out my 5-ton come-along and winch myself out because the keys are back home so I won't lose them in the snow. D'oh!
    I may end up leaving my tractor and walking out. Double D'oh!
    So while I freaked out a little, I hit on the idea of levering up the front of the tractor with my plow, while trying to get the plow to windrow to the right. My plow has a blow-off valve to protect itself from hits and wasn't super cooperative, but eventually I was able to windrow while holding the right brake, and trying to move forward and the entire tractor levered over to the right, away from the lousy tree, and then a hose on my plow blew because the blowoff valve was never meant to try to hold up the front end of 8400 pounds while also being fed pressure to window.
    Without directional control of my plow, I was done.
    On the way home, a mile and a half from my home, right where I had slid off the road there was a car and a truck stuck that had apparently been following in the trail I had made on my way out and I nearly got stuck there again driving around them.
    When I got home, a neighbor told me on Facebook that two of our friends had gotten stuck with their plow trucks tonight. I count myself lucky to have made it home with my gimped plow.

    I prefer the cold weather. In winter and fall you can always put layers of clothes on but in summer months, you can only strip down to few layers and still be too dang hot. Yep, cold months are preferred. Full-watch.

    16 inches of snow on top of 3 inches of slush on top of mud north of Duluth. Now with the rain it's almost all gone. The mud is still there though. Good luck getting those brush likes started.

    There is a reason more snowbirds head south in the fall than there are people from the south heading north in the spring. July fourth through mid-September can be a real bear but not like this. Advantages and disadvantages everywhere.

      There is a big rubber snow guard that runs along the top of my plow. Plowing this much snow and that snow guard makes a shelf where snow can just sit there making it look like snow isn't rolling. However in several places this wet snow didn't want to roll all that well but for the most part, the snow rolled way better than I expected.

    You must be north and/or west of the Twin Cities. St.Paul got about 4" of heavy wet snow which is now gone. I have about 2000 feet of driveway to plow and blow with two big Toro garden tractors. 1000 feet of it we give up if the winter gets nasty as a flat field is west of it with nothing to stop the wind.

    In CT, of course, we don't get nearly as cold, but we get our share of snow due to the proximity of the Atlantic. I've gone to chains on all four corners, mostly because of the hills. I was surprised how successful you are plowing without them. Is that cab video a factory option?

    • @MinnesotaEric

    With that much snow, I would have used the snowblower to clear the majority of it. I would suck backing up, but it sure make it easier clearing that much snow at once.

    • @MinnesotaEric
      @MinnesotaEric  6 років тому

      With this kind of set-up with a plow in front, and a blower in back, when ever possible to use, the plow is way, way faster. The blower gets used to push back banks, or in places where there isn't any room to push snow, but the snow can by blown out of the way. This tractor has a backup camera in it for long periods of blowing.

    I always wondered the kinda person that would keep the wood they heat there house with away from the house, you have all summer to do something with it but wait till it snows? Now I know why " up north " is considered the meth capital of Minnesota

    • @MinnesotaEric
      @MinnesotaEric  7 років тому +5

      I heat with propane, not with wood. A slash pile is a mess of unwanted wood. In this case, I'm cleaning up a property that was logged off 15-20 years ago. The slash piles will be burned in the winter so as to prevent a forest fire from lighting up when 8' high 100 foot wide piles of combustable miscellany are set on fire. The snow and cold keep the fire from spreading which is why we prefer to burn slash piles in the winter.
