As a really old man(66) on a mountain bike with his dog . My peak heart rate is 167bpm. I try for a steady 145bpm but I get carried away on the hills. Glad to see you on UA-cam again. I saw your last get together with Ryan on one of his trips. One day he might try and pinch Mira? 😅
Wow. I never realized how organized you need to get to ride. I just thought you just rode and rode and rode. Way technical stay safe and stay strong. Hi mira 👍
I'm excited for you both. Thanks for sharing, it's really cool to see what you and Mira have to go through to train. Wishing you always the very best ❤️
Fhe other day while riding LA metro with my bike and dog, another cyclist struck up conversation. Looking at Carmella he asked if id seen the channel with a cyclist traveling with his Border Collie...immedietly knew he was talking about you! We talked dogs and bikes, Ryan also came up. Great group of people being brought together by your content. Thanks once again.
Thanks for sharing this little encounter. We don’t really like social media. It often feels like a bunch of pointless small talk or one big add. This tends to make me sad. So, it’s a real treat to hear that two, otherwise strangers could find a connection based on some of the content we shared. I think that’s pretty cool.🤘💕🐶
I know it's not your thing, but we really enjoy your UA-cam contributions, so keep doing it... and you really should have called it it the "Mira" channel for searches. Thx from Kamloops Canada!
Hey Scott, Thanks for your comments. After the tour divide, we will try to produce more videos on our ride back to Canada and if that all works out will continue through Latin America. ✌️🐶💕
Brava👏. Thank you for taking the time to make this video and sharing your training regimen. Impressive. As always, Mira is a star. Really enjoy seeing her happiness. Lastly. "I'm old. 52" 😆. You're just getting started.🤗. Enjoy the ride.🚴♂️
Mira is just a typical dog after all (I know she isn't really), find the dirtiest puddle🤣Tough intervals in that heat John but needs must😉Age is just a number John, I did my longest 1 day bike ride of 154 miles at 54yo on a standard road bike and 162 miles on an e bike at 64yo! Awesome video, good to see a longer one this time👍
I know what you mean about age. I can reasonably plan for 20 more solid years of solid health and adventure. After that quién sabe. Momento Mori Can’t be wasting any of it. 🤪💕🐕
Yes,Mira’s parents were both working dogs on a ranch. I think they would have preferred for her to follow in the family business of herding sheep and cattle. I think they would be proud of her 🐶💕🤪
Amigo gracias por compartir tus videos , y gracias por cuidar tan bien de Mira , cuídate tú también y te deseo la mejor de la suerte en tu entrenamiento para el CTDivede . Saludos desde Puerto Rico 🇵🇷
I’m sooooo happy to see you and Mira! You two are looking good. How exciting that you have a race coming up. Best wishes for a safe journey for you both :-)
It's great to be able to watch you train for this. As to max HR, I think there's quite a bit of evidence that the old "220-your age" formula is not too accurate for lifelong athletes such as yourself. I've been using the Hunt formula for awhile, which is 211-(.64*age), which seems to be pretty close for me.
Well, if we’re going to be geeks about it… Really without a functional test with bloodwork it’s all just an approximation of which energy system you’re working in. But that’s just fine for most of us I think. It doesn’t change a lot since most of our riding is at a very slow pace. For an event like this it’s easy to get caught in the weeds details. The basics still apply. Consistent hard work with adequate recovery and adaptation are the key for the training part. No matter how much I do it’s gonna be a lot of discomfort during our time racing. But that’s part of why we chose to do it. Thanks for taking the time to watch the video and leave a comment. It’s much appreciated.
John great to see you back on UTUBE, glad to see Mira I miss that dog , keep training , can you show a little more Mira , maybe film her when you’re taking for a while
Glad to see you two rolling it. Will you be getting a Spot tracker and joining in on Trackleaders so the we can follow your progess with the blue dot? Best of luck to you for having a fast ride but more importantly a fun and safe ride!!!😮
Hey John and Mira, ive seen those pages of your training plan someplace before but cant place it. can you share a link to your plan? best of luck to you both on the ride! love your vids.
Hey John, love seeing you and Mira training or otherwise, Im in Alberta and breathing is an issue with wildfire smoke, experts are saying this is just the beginning of the fire season and I know some riders had to scratch the TD last year for the same reasons. Cant train to work through smoke. Hoping all works out and you get clear sky’s and great weather. On another note. Are you wearing a Garmin crossover Solar watch? I was wondering if battery life is decent with all the functions it performs, looks like the tactical solar version but kinda hard to tell on the video. Allbest !
Good eye. I am wearing a @garmin Felix 7X solar. Works well and has an incredible battery life for all that it does. @dcrainmaker has some in depth reviews
Excellent training profile and work you two are putting in!! Great to hear that your recovery times are shortening...super progress. Question: when you refuel with calories during a ride/training session, what are you feeding Mira to keep calories/energy for her? Thanks for sharing your adventure! Really enjoy following along.
Mad respect for you both! Not sure how you do it John. You were very helpful to me last spring/summer when I was training my pup, Pelli, a heeler/shepherd cross, to ride in a Burley Coho. We've ridden single track as well as dirt road....but holy cow man, he's 55 pounds now and even the flats are tough and high hr zones. I've been keeping his mileage down because he's so young, a little over a year. I'm thinking I may have to wait until he's older and stronger before I really do some bikepacking adventures but Mira started going with you when she was 5 months old. Am I being too cautious? Do you do anything special with Mira's diet and do you use electrolytes in her water. Sorry if you've had that info in another video. Best of luck, your an incredible team!
You are so right to be cautious with a young dog. When Mira was a young puppy packer i carried her most of the time. We would walk up the hills together. Slow but fun. Mostly she eats dog food and water. She gets lots of snacks on the trail. Meat, some cheese. I will give her some electrolytes on the TDR. Be very careful with artificial sweeteners some are toxic to dogs. Best to consult your vet.
My puppy is 7 months old, we train every other day on grass, pavement, sand or gravel. She gets distracted easily, she will run straight keep pace with me but a random pigeon or floating plastic bag will grab her attention and takes time to regain. Shes young, so the pace we ride is set by her, she will let me know when she wants a rest, or a quick wrestling match. What are your thoughts John? Shes a Dachshund/Jack Russell/Chihuahua mix, 7 month old female. I also have been using a FIDA abs retractable leash clipped to my belt. Thoughts? Thanks
It always a good idea to consult with your vet. Be cautious and patient with the amount of exercise you give young dogs as growth plates can be damaged if you let them overdo it. Great that your having fun with your pup ✌️🐶💕
Did you train Mira yourself or did she go into a formal training program to be a "trail dog". She is so well behaved around others, she not running off when you take her off leash. She seems well behaved around other animals. Does she know what critters to avoid when on trail?
Don’t forget to check all that good stuff in the description to videos. That information, as well as other good stuff is down there. @mira_la_perra @omnitierra

Wow. I never realized how organized you need to get to ride. I just thought you just rode and rode and rode. Way technical stay safe and stay strong. Hi mira 👍
It doesn’t have to be. You can do whatever you want. This is just our approach to this particular race.
Good luck with your endeavours John. Gentle men are great inspiration
I'm excited for you both. Thanks for sharing, it's really cool to see what you and Mira have to go through to train. Wishing you always the very best ❤️
Was just in Grand Junction this past week and thought I saw you and Mira.
Now it’ll have to be somewhere in Latin America if you’re at a spot us🤗💕🐕
Great to see a video from you! You are putting in a lot of work! Hope to see you and Mira when you come through Columbia Falls, MT 🐾🐾🐾
You And Mira 🙏❤️✌️ Are In My Prayers Brother 😎. Thanks for sharing the Training Information 🙂
I love the care you take not only of yourself but of Mira. Thanks for the video, good luck on your adventure
Mira’s safety is always #1. These fun adventures are not without risk so it’s important to plan ahead.
Amazing! What a way to live life!
Just think,...how much coffee, you're gonna be able to haul after these intervals! Watching ya in the race!
Yes, they’re pretty effective

Yes! We call them Chicharras ? 🤔 They Sing when rain is coming. My Cycling Mantra Is: Psych Yourself Into The Event! Don't Psych Yourself Out! ✌️❤️🙏
In Oaxaca they say they sing when it’s super hot. But after it’s super hot, eventually, the rains come.🤔.
Looking fit, John!!!
Fit-ish 🤔

Nutrition, Sleep, and stretching are important to help with long distance bike touring as for stamina and endurance long distance riding.

Thanks for this. I've been slacking a bit on my training, so this was a kick in the arse for me.
Your videos are inspiring, can’t wait to get on the bike!
Great to see somebody choosing a different path through life. One that is thoughtfully considered. Good luck!

Great Video! Best of luck to you a Mira ❤❤
Happy to see you again, John and Mirra, greetings from Colombia.

The link to Kurt’s website is in the description. Also, www.ultramtb.net/trainingplans.html
8 mins at zone 5 is insane hard. Basically 8 mins at max heart rate.
Pretty fun intervals 🤘

Hi John &Mira,
Where can I purchase Mira’s water bottle?

There is a link in the description 👍
@@OmniTierra thank you very much, keep the rubber side down👍

I am so excited for you two and great job training. I have not looked into the ride, but how many miles do you have to do a day?
We will ride somewhere close to 260km/ day as an average. That’s the plan going in.

About 4300km
Miss Mira with the sticks in her mouth, funny
Did you train Mira yourself or did she go into a formal training program to be a "trail dog". She is so well behaved around others, she not running off when you take her off leash. She seems well behaved around other animals. Does she know what critters to avoid when on trail?
An animal human relationship is no different than a human human relationship, or marriage. You get out of it what you put into it.
Mostly it’s about consistent positive reinforcement. Mira is a very loving dog that adapts quickly.
Is anybody else competing in the "human + dog" category? ;)
As far as I know, no one else is, and no one else has ever competed in this category before. 🐕💕💯
I have two heelers . But they dont behave like yours
She's a special girl.
All your hard work will pay off John just have fun, you have prepared yourself and Mira so just go with the flow. :) :) Good Luck!! :)
The journey we have had training throughout Oaxaca has been inspiring and challenging. The race was just a justification for all this.
