I always found the scene with Serie walking with Frieren to be really sad. Serie still saw Flamme as a little girl who liked flowers. Her first thought after hearing of Flamme's death was to think about the walks through the woods while holding hands. Poor Serie needed to sit down with someone like Himmel to help her process her emotions.
@@Maxwellkage2763 Serie asking Frieren to walk with her was her awkward way of acknowledging that Flammes' death impacted her....however annoyed she was with the will, she still, on some level, wanted to take a few moments to remember her student.....even if backhanded compliments are all she knows.
it's one of my favourites because of the sadness surrounding Flammes death. One thing that kills me is that POV shot from Serie where Flamme runs ahead of her and Serie doesn't let go of her hand until Flamme is too far ahead. Breaks my heart, in a good way.
That's what I love about Serie's character, she's very misunderstood, she's not a Tsundere, Tsunderes know they're emotions and act like they're not, but Serie doesn't know and doesn't understand, she's as complex as what an Elf that lived for millennias Should Be.
Flamme was also a master manipulator of elves. Both Serie and Frieren are living the lives that Flamme wanted them to. I wouldn't be surprised if we learned that Flamme and Kraft were adventuring pals and she suggested that he become a monk.
@@MC-yt1uv It never says this outright in the show, but the statues of Kraft and his friend all show Kraft as a fighter and his friend as a priest. It seems like he took up priesthood in memory of his friend, at least that is my guess
I just love that this is the first time Frieren has been showing using any offensive spell that isn’t Zoltraak. Fern said that Frieren told her that basic offensive magic was all that was needed to defeat mages of the current era, but Frieren is not a mage of this era. For all that Flamme set her up as a mage of a peaceful era, Frieren is old-school and so needs to use actual battle magic against herself. It immediately puts her on a completely different tier to every human mage in the show
Serie's relationship with Flamme is more or less a direct parallel to Frieren and Fern's, the difference is that one had someone like Himmel to make her realise her emotions. That's why the other can't be honest with her own.
I also think the Zoltraak reflexive defense thing could also be compared to nowadays technology. For example a child who is born in let's say 2010 will be 14 now and they will have an incredibly easy time operating a smartphone and using it's abilities while a person who is born in let's say 1960 who will be 64 now will have a much harder time adapting and learning how to use a smartphone. It is not impossible but you will need to put in effort to do it, while to the kid it will almost come naturally since they were born in such a time and operating a phone is, as the show said : Engraved into their being
You can tell Anna edits these, love how she leaves little markers for herself (the hand wave, this is done so you can see it while scrubbing through the timeline) whenever Ben decides to go back and look through the episode, so she knows where to insert the footage.
I don't always watch reactors' discussion--yet I always give you both an ear! You both analyze well. I finished this show a while back, but hearing your analysis opens up new perspectives. Almost as if I'm rewatching and enjoying Frieren in another light
1. Methode is ABSOLUTELY the right kind of woman for Sein. Anna gets it. She is 100% "onee-san" archetype. 2. Ben watching Kanne and Lawine and being like "they really are just like sisters" - sure, buddy. Sisters. To paraphrase the wise Fern from way back in episode 3, Ben "seems to be hopelessly dense." 😉
I agree with Anna that Methode would be a good fit for Sein. She's old enough and would be his type. I loved the flashback with Serie and seeing how much she actually cared about Flamme and just doesn't have the capability to express her sorrow. I also really like how Frieren breaks down the difference between generations with magic. Fern has grown up with magic and is able to cast it easily, as opposed to Frieren who still takes a bit longer to cast Zoltrak. Its like kids knowing how to used computers and phones and older generations still might not have a solid grasp of it.
22:34 You know what? This is why I love the open-source software community. It's literally based on this concept. Guys voluntarily contributing for the benefit of everyone just because why not. I've used so much free software, so I might as well contribute in something here and there.
It's a shame that the series is ending (until S2 comes out in 2040) but I hope they react to something like Undead Unluck, cause I think they would really like the power system and the world building
Serie is a warmage, valuing only combat magic and power. That's why she refuses to fight the demon lord, to keep the world in permanent war. Flamme was an in-between who spent her life killing demons and teaching combat magic to Frieren. That's why Frieren's love for magic diminished, but she managed to reignite her passion after showing the flower magic. And Frieren is the peace hippi, who kills the demons if she has to, but values a simple folk magic over any combat magic and just wants to spend her life looking for them. Fern is the same as her. And this is why Serie dislikes Frieren, she thinks Frieren is wasting her potential and the ideology they believe in are polar opposites
@@ambatuBUHSURK Compared to Serie, she is. And im not sure she "loves" it... i mean in episode 10 Flamme asks her if she likes magic and she says she loves it, but after teaching her combat magic only for 50 years she asks the same question and Frieren answers "somewhat". That doesn't sound like she "loves combat"
that ties back to the flashback where Serie says that elves can afford to delay their decision even for a millennium, so now, after a thousand years, she felt like doing it (probably on a whim if i had to guess :D)
Yeah, just like she told Frieren, Serie took a thousand years to delay her decision to honor Flamme's last request and then came up with a way to do it on her terms so that she only taught and recognized the very talented. And she did so despite having refused already. I find fascinating that Serie is so powerful and knowledgeable but she has been shown to take things other people tell her into account and re-adjust her opinions, like when Flamme told her Frieren could beat the Demon King but they could not and she didn't argue after Flamme explained what she meant, or in this episode when she flatly refuses to do as Flamme asked but then starts re-examining the idea after Frieren tells her that Famme knew she'd get upset and tear up her will but her dream of making magic available to humans had come true.
Methode would be Sein's type, the anime translated "onee-san" as older woman, but it's more like a woman with big sister energy, which Methode fits quite well.
That flashback within a flashback is so powerful. It took me a while to figure it out, but Serie didn't tear up Flamme's will because she hated what was written in it. She tore up the will because she wasn't ready to accept that Flamme had passed away. I think Serie went on that walk with Frieren, despite neither of them really having an interest in each other, because Serie just wanted to talk to another person who remembered Flamme. By the way, we already know what spell Frieren would ask for from Serie, because Serie already made her that offer in a flashback during the first test. (Frieren didn't ask for anything, because "the greatest joy of magic lies in searching for it".) I think the spell that "seals a door at the risk of your life" doesn't mean that the spell directly endangers the caster's life. It just indirectly endangers them by forcing people to kill them in order to open the door.
Yeah, but in this case Frieren did do something to earn it. So it's possible she would ask for something, I mean, she had to complete a dungeon and everything.
I imagine "stops detecting mana when casting a spell" is like the mage equivalent of someone firing a gun and squeezing their eyes shut just as it fires.
This is probably my favorite episode of the season, especially that Serie flashback never fails to tear me up. Seeing her remembering little Flamme... 😢 All that flashback episodes with Serie and Flamme are so emotional, they really are 2 of my favorite characters.
"at the risk of your life" I think this was just a bad choice of wording. The spell creates a seal linked to the caster's own life. Think of it as something like a dead man's switch - it's simply a seal that can only be deactivated by either killing the caster or convincing them to dispel it themselves.
I like it that they build-up Fern to be an awesome mage and everyone thinks that she will be able to beat Frieren ... until next episode. Fern was smashed like a bug which makes total sense. Becoming incredibly strong takes time. Many others shows today ignore that fact (e.g. Star Wars with Rey).
The original wording of 'old man' in english translate is referring man at the range between 40-50 (in dictionary) or even 30-50 (by look or how the speaker don't want to interact). I would say 'old man' is a bit too old for the original word. But the 'old man' Lawine said in this episode definitely mean old man, she just want to lowkey insult him.
To me Kanne and Lawine seem to be more than just "like sisters". I sense a hint of love between them. They have moments that only couples usually get and Lawine being a tsundere can work as well^^
Frieren, Apothecary and maybe Kaiju 8 are the shit. Demon Slayer peaked in season one. So much effort towards mid shows. I'd be astounded if you guys did weakest tamer.

The name Flamme was so apropos. She was basically the Prometheus of this world.
