Wish I had some old video of Brandon Holt bringing both hands up together. He’s corrected it since then. I don’t think he’d be in the top 300 otherwise.
My school coach is teaching all of these...
So why would u want to toss the ball higher because u have to wait for the ball to come down. Apex ball means u just change direction of ball and ball is @ neutral velocity. It does not make ur contact point lower. If u jump up into ur serve then apex is higher. Ur explanation indicates u don't know physics or biomechanics. U r correct about no snapping of wrist. Pronation and ulnar deviation r the motions u want.
Hi James, You should ask the question to 99% of all ATP and WTA players...honestly, placing the ball the contact height (and not above) presents a number of problems. That is why you rarely see it on the tour: Just check out this video to confirm: ua-cam.com/video/iX3UUUAu5zE/v-deo.htmlsi=9JOE8ZHY4lRhNyzf. Best, John
Except of course the scientific studies show that pronation and ulnar deviation add little to nothing to serve speed while wrist flexion is a significant contributor to serve speed. The key point here is that consciously trying to snap the wrist can in some cases lead to a tight wrist and less of the vitally important wrist snap.
I'd like to see those studies...please send me any links. Thank you! @@marktace1

The terminology is a bit different than currently used and it is important to note that these percentages are only relative to the arm and contributions from earlier in the kinetic chain are implied, not directly shown.
Actually the best servers do hit the ball at apex. Andy Roddick did it the best. Inner in hi prime even hit it on the way up. As to the value of pronation and ulnar deviation you'll have have to fight that out with USTA master pros I'm o ly a PTR master pro so what do I know??
So snapping on a flat serve is bad?
Snapping on any serve is bad
There’s no snap after contact and generally you don’t want to try to snap into contact. However, you will snap into contact without trying to on a well executed flat serve, otherwise you’ll lose a lot of speed. There are times when trying to snap into contact with a loose wrist can be beneficial such as when you are hitting consistently long, but generally it isn’t necessary to make a conscious effort to do so.
@@jchan810 Actually snapping into contact provides a significant portion of serve speed. It is a necessary part of the serve. However, when you do it consciously it can lead to a tight wrist and less snap.
