Fascinating lecture with great insight into the political dynamics playing out in Germany at that time. Your analysis is excellent.

Great lecture! War documentaries are all over UA-cam, but I'm never as interested in the battles as I am the politics that begot the war and are born at the end of a war.

The reason that America lent money via the Dawes & Young plans was because American business leaders knew if Germany couldn’t pay its reparations to Britain and France then Britain and France couldn’t repay its war debts back to the us . I’m sure your claim about us entrepreneurs looking for markets for surplus product has basis but ultimately us intervention was self-interest

Agreed! It reminds me a little of the Marshall plan. It gave economic support for western Europe so they remained in the market economic camp, while instilling a degree of economic loyalty to the US. My grandfather was German and he loved the US- coca-cola and Camel cigarettes were his favorite till the day he died!

I do. The lectures were pretty much designed to provide content while we were in quarantine last spring. Most of my students learn most effectively through lecture- at least that's what they tell me!

@@erictolmanshistorylectures90 Thank you, Eric. I wanted to find out what would happen in a currency collapse. I wondered if gold or silver coins were used as currency. I was surprised to find out that cigarettes were used as currency! -- John from Minnesota
