Tree Barb sounds like one of the best subclasses I've heard of. The mobility and battlefield control, all flavored around getting pulled underground by roots and popping up somewhere else, or adding extra tree branches to a melee attack to clobber someone, or pulling someone to you, it all hits the notes of both ability and theme. I love it. I may have to break down and finally play a barbarian. I can already envision all the homemade Groots this is going to give rise to
7:12 yes, it has been clarified that unless stated otherwise in new design languages, any creature can willingly fail saving throws This means that you can use this feature to teleport an ally near you so that they can benefit from your temp hp ability
Most of the UA had said that the new PHB will clarify that all saving throws can be voluntarily failed, so that level 6 teleport ability is a fantastic support ability AND great control. This is probably my favorite barbarian subclass now. It feels so cool. Can’t wait to try it out!
Hunger of hadar specifically wont work with at least the branches, since its an area you can see. I do love some of the synergy and utility this brings to a barbarian
Kelly! Reflavor this and you have your Alex Mercer PROTOTYPE character. (Or Venom, Carnage, even Spidey) The tendrils from the descriptions are begging for reskinning and I’m imagining the weapon masteries morphing right out of them. And you can literally have web-slinging. So many thematic possibilities with this 🤯
I'm already picturing a barbarian with tree root tattoos that magically spring from their skin and turn into actual roots and then lassoing enemies up and yanking them over to them.
i love the flavor of rage that this brings thematically it's not only focused on being a tank and protecting yourself but also protecting others, it also goes good from a point of rage being channeled from wanting to protect like a fight or flight of a parent rather then pure anger channeled from revenge or wanting to just kill the enemy
This subclass sounds pretty awesome. At lvl 6 thought of a character idea w/flavor for that ability. Reborn race and play as a "Spectral Warden" so at 3rd you give extra temp hp to those deemed innocent and at 6th level instead of branches its chains grabbing an enemy and bringing them to you for judgment.
You can literally infinite combo with the push prone pull. You pull them in while they are prone, so when it’s your turn you have advantage, then you knock them back and prone them again. Rinse repeat forever
Actually a manga I’m keeping up with has a similar feeling race of giants that are protecting and living under the protection of a world tree spirit. Power fantasy 7.8/10, poorly named comic called Max Level Newbie
This is absolutely my new favorite barb. So much movement. So much survivability. This really feels like the barbarian that couldn’t quite make it through Druid school but they’re still really good with trees lol
I'm liking all I'm seeing from these books. I'm really glad you guys are reviewing the upcoming releases. I've been playing D&D since the early 80s, new updates and editions have always been part of the fun.
This'll be really good for exploration and getting around difficult terrain and whatnot. Also I really like the idea of teleporting 60 feet above the enemies head and hitting them with a falling strike, or teleporting above the dragons head to land an easy hit. There are some fun combos you can pull off with this new subclass.
Being able to Bonus action teleport 30 feet to a landing, hold your action to attack anyone who appears next to you, teleport someone up on their turn and attack them is great and all! But, the fact that you would also use push and knock them back down the 30 feet makes this SOOOO much better
Holding an action requires your reaction for it to trigger. As you only have one reaction per turn you can't use the teleport reaction and your held attack re(action).
That ability to knock enemies prone and then teleport them to you and reduce their speed to zero is insane. not only can they not get up they also have disadvantage on attack rolls and you will have advantage on your melee attack being right in front of them. after think about this combo im realizing it doesn't continuously loop . you cant knock a prone enemy prone again and as such the condition will lift start of their turn. yes you can still teleport them back in front of you and reduce their speed to zero but now they are kind of forced to attack you. which i guess is what you as a barbarian want.
A potential combo with the teleport roots when fighting a flying enemy: Use an Enlarge potion or spell from an ally to become Large. When the flying enemy’s turn comes up, teleport them to a spot around you that is 10 feet off the ground. Since their speed is 0 they fall 10 feet (provided they can’t hover), take 1d6 fall damage, land prone, and can’t get up from prone since their speed is 0.
This would make for a cool Druegar path of the Elder Brain (World Tree) Barbarian who rages as they are taken over by the Elder Brain and can justify being more strategic in combat than otherwise because they are being brain hacked. Also psionic tentacles pulling folks around would make the brain so much scarier. Could be reflavored again to be a Krakon for a Sea campaign.
This makes me more inspired to play barbarian than I ever have. I like the idea of a Wood Elf World Tree Barbarian with the dual wielder feat and dual wielding battle axes which have the topple mastery.
The best part is the abilities here remove the need or desire for offensive feats. Now you can choose defensive, utility, or role play feats to really give a barbarian a strong presence in all pillars of play.
I love the idea of teleporting (14) on top of a small cliff/elevated battle terrain thing or something, teleporting an enemy (6) up with me, attack them on my turn, apply the Push mastery (10) and then teleport away with the next Bonus Action or just keep repeating it. So badass
A barbarian with Battlefield control Is insane. Also, you said rage recharge on short rest, and some of this ability have a "per rage" effect, this Is intense. Also two world tree barbarian fighting side by side can grant each other temp hp for tankiness to next montg
I have NEVER thought about playing a barb before (I don’t get to play much) but this actually sounds fun as there is a lot more utility than just “hit stuff good”.
I’ve been playing the UA version for 3 months now and am absolutely in love with. Just started watching but glad to see changes and hoping they’re great!
I think the weapon mastery stuff is exactly what martial needs. Imagine for a sec a lvl 10 barb you attack a creature with a weapon using the push and push them up. Your reach is extended, so you can use the double mastery to push them up again. Then bonus action teleport 55 ft up and on their turn reaction teleport them to 5ft below you. that's an extra 5d6 just from fall damage. By raw you're resistant to bludeoning while raging so you take half, but rule of cool the enemy can probably soften your blow a bit by being underneath. the combo potential is actually incredible with this new feature. I love it
In regards to party synergy either the wizard you spoke about before or somebody else have the ability to give enemies disadvantage on saving throws it would work very well
I've never been into the martial classes, because I love my complex spellcasters too much. BUT, I am absolutely playing this barbarian subclass when I get a chance, it sounds amazing!
I think they'll have to change some features of this barb subclass. The combo you mentioned would effectively make the enemy permanently locked prone without ability to move or do anything really, unless they save on the strength saving throw. That's a really powerful thing that could make many boss fights completely trivial.
I'm picturing using the lance for the first time with this Barbarian (I know, I know, who uses a lance). I think the lance gets push weapon mastery, plus reach, then adding topple at level 10. Mix this with the level 6 ability, I can just picture this Barbarian as a walking ballista (using tree like roots for the "bow"), harpooning enemies with the lance and dragging them back.
The UAs had a sidebar that said "The 2024 Player's Handbook will clarify that you can always choose to fail a saving throw." So grabbing allies with Branches of the Tree is good to go!
I am fairly sure that in one of the last UAs there was a statement that allies can voluntarily fail saves on effects from their friends... it might have even been in the one with the last tweaks to this sub-class
Ok so the Branches of the Tree ability would be crazy if you can get flight. Fly above a group of enemies, start pulling them up 30ft and reducing their speed to zero. They immediately fall 30ft, prone and can't stand until their next turn. All other melee combatants get advantage on their attacks.
I think it is so cool that you can seemingly teleport allies (if i am intepreting this correctly). Also I am factually unsure how of a role BG3 barbarians played in some of the other decisions, but i am inclined to credit Larian Studios for popularizing both throwing enemies and pushing them off cliffs. Either way, I can't wait for the hijinks!
First thought ok cool I can be Odin. Second thought hell ya I’m Hiemdall. Third thought oh my good god I’m about to juggle every monster like street fighter.
I think my main concern/criticism is the temporary HP of the level 3 feature... Like if a higher percentage of enemies will be dealing non-BPS damage, the base Damage reduction of rage will matter less at higher levels, and the temp HP you give yourself at the start of a rage might also have problems keeping pace with incoming enemy damage, and it seems like it will feel really bad on turns when there are no allies in range to give temporary HP to, which makes me wish the range of the feature was larger, or at least scaled at higher levels (like "a range of number of feet equal to 5 times your rage modifier").
Re: branches of the tree: it was confirmed in a playtest that any creature can voluntarily save any save, so you can pull your allies if they want you to.
I think all barbarian subclasses should be based on this, heck, all MARTIAL subclasses. Giving martials spells as features (misty step at lvl 14) is such a nice way to get that super hero feel of it
Just want to play a Bugbear with this subclass and 3 level dip into Rune Knight. yes, you need a 2nd turn for full set up, but you would have a functionally 30-foot reach on every attack 😆
As Bobby the Barbarian from the cartoon had a magic tree club I can see him grow into this barbarian style making his tree club weapon something crazy!!!
My totem barb (echo knight) would LOVE this. They have a returning axe from an artificer so we'd just go all Thor or Kratos. Level 3 does seem weak though
This is one of the first straight martial subclasses I have seen that I would be interested in playing. It actually competes with spellcasters for tactical options and battlefield control. Existing subclasses better step up their game in the new book.
Currently playing a campaign where the Barbarian has Mobile Feat and Path of the Beast. This new subclass sounds like what my campaigns barbarian does. Rage - Reckless Attacks - Mobile gives you the option to move away without attack of opportunity, they have 50 feet of movement. So often what he does is, moves up to the enemy that is engaged the tank fighter, attacks at advantage, then moves 20 feet away. Does it over and over again.
This sounds amazing. Barb is always my favorite class to play when I just want to turn my brain off and hit stuff, and all the added mobility and control is so cool.

i love the flavor of rage that this brings thematically it's not only focused on being a tank and protecting yourself but also protecting others, it also goes good from a point of rage being channeled from wanting to protect like a fight or flight of a parent rather then pure anger channeled from revenge or wanting to just kill the enemy
This is the ultimate battlefield control and positioning class. Interesting.
You can literally infinite combo with the push prone pull. You pull them in while they are prone, so when it’s your turn you have advantage, then you knock them back and prone them again. Rinse repeat forever
Path of the World Tree is a really cool concept for a barbarian
Actually a manga I’m keeping up with has a similar feeling race of giants that are protecting and living under the protection of a world tree spirit. Power fantasy 7.8/10, poorly named comic called Max Level Newbie
This subclass would wreck so many spellcasting enemies
Especially with the mage slayer + sentinel feat. Absolutely brutal. You wanted to misty step away? Haha Nope! I'm the teleport boy, not you.
This is absolutely my new favorite barb. So much movement. So much survivability. This really feels like the barbarian that couldn’t quite make it through Druid school but they’re still really good with trees lol
Been watching the channel for a long time and just gotta say, you two are looking good! Happy & Healthy, hope all continues to go well!!!
I'm liking all I'm seeing from these books. I'm really glad you guys are reviewing the upcoming releases. I've been playing D&D since the early 80s, new updates and editions have always been part of the fun.
Now I want to make a wooden warforged that wields a great club. His name will be cricket
Awesome! Love seeing you guys get to do cool stuff like this
As I've looked through all of the subclasses in D&D 5e I'm convinced that the eloquence bard is the best.
Glamour is my fave
@@DandDgamer That's a good choice, but not my 1st choice.
Mine is fun as a role play focused character. I mostly use the features to keep secrets from my party.
This subclass feeling S tier and I feel like all the revisions and new subclasses are gunna be like this too
Big power boost for PCs. I won't allow characters from 2024 in games that have old D&D characters.
@@pheralanpathfinder4897 I think thats wise. I could see some 2014 ones doing well in a 2024 game but vice versa would be difficult
@@pheralanpathfinder4897 Good for you. I will let my players use whichever versions they want to use.
I'm excited for a new series of tier rankings. As well as new videos from Colby on how to multiclass these new subclasses
OMG! I've never heard of this Barbarian subclass before. What a great addition to D&D and TTRPGs in general!
Oh god this subclass is so cool!!! I love the theme, I love the abilities, this is my next character.
Glad to hear you got a copy of the new book! You guys deserve it. Been watching your videos ever since pandemic,, when i started playing dnd
My D&D youtubers are killing it today! So awesome!
Also: I am Groot.
I'm so glad you guys are covering 5.2 in depth
We are very excited!
This makes me more inspired to play barbarian than I ever have. I like the idea of a Wood Elf World Tree Barbarian with the dual wielder feat and dual wielding battle axes which have the topple mastery.
Wow the temp hp being 2d6 at level 3 is NUTS!! i hope the updated monsters can keep up with the players 😭
A common complaint is that many monsters can ignore the barbs resistance as they do force damage so I think it'll balance out.
@@20storiesunder oh damn so like more monsters are dealing force damage? im not sure if im interpreting that correctly
@@koldblazer12 Correct! It's been this way since multiverse of madness.
Every time is the right time for more Dungeon Dudes content
The best part is the abilities here remove the need or desire for offensive feats. Now you can choose defensive, utility, or role play feats to really give a barbarian a strong presence in all pillars of play.
I love the idea of teleporting (14) on top of a small cliff/elevated battle terrain thing or something, teleporting an enemy (6) up with me, attack them on my turn, apply the Push mastery (10) and then teleport away with the next Bonus Action or just keep repeating it.
So badass
Using that teleport, with a party who can all fly, to teleport straight up into the air is a very funny mental image
I LOVE THIS. I love barbarians in general, and I play them quite often. This is awesome. I need this in my life!
I all but stopped playing Barbs but holy moly im doing this one. I am VERY excited for this. Great job guys!
A barbarian with Battlefield control Is insane. Also, you said rage recharge on short rest, and some of this ability have a "per rage" effect, this Is intense. Also two world tree barbarian fighting side by side can grant each other temp hp for tankiness to next montg
Yea in the new rules barbarians get back 1 rage per short rest and can keep rage up for 10 minutes by spending bonus actions to keep it up
I have NEVER thought about playing a barb before (I don’t get to play much) but this actually sounds fun as there is a lot more utility than just “hit stuff good”.
I’ve been playing the UA version for 3 months now and am absolutely in love with. Just started watching but glad to see changes and hoping they’re great!
I like the idea of the enemy teleporting and using it to drop them into a trap.
Give this barbarian a flying speed and let your enemies fall after teleporting them towards you...
The best part is that they have no one to attack within their reach and a speed of 0, that is, if you don't position yourself right above your allies.
Stop, I can only rage so hard.....
The dance bard that Ginny Di previewed looks really cool too. I don't usually want to play a bard, but I'd play that one.
The UAs had a sidebar that said "The 2024 Player's Handbook will clarify that you can always choose to fail a saving throw."
So grabbing allies with Branches of the Tree is good to go!
I've never played a barbarian but this looks fun. This paired with a druid and their areas of effect spells seems great
I am fairly sure that in one of the last UAs there was a statement that allies can voluntarily fail saves on effects from their friends... it might have even been in the one with the last tweaks to this sub-class
I think you mean "fail any save" and not "save any save".
Congratulations dudes! ❤
Battlefield control and movement are my favourite combat styles (why I love the Ghostlance multi class), so I think I’ll enjoy this subclass!
I'm so happy with the journey you guys have been on and now you have the owners of the D and D brand name slipping you their homework lol. I've listened to other channels that credit you guys for some of their home rules and such. All of us, but especially new players, are lucky to have your material. I wish I'd had it back when I began. (1993)
Thank you so much 😊
