My neighbors' house. While relaxing I heard my wife start to yell fire. I ran over to find the neighbors house on fire and notified 911. I attempted to kick in the rear door fearful the son was sleeping late in the basement. Unsuccessful, I ran to the front, thought about another kick, then tested the door; it was open. The son did not respond to my calls, but I noticed the two dogs were inside. I convinced one to run to me, but the other was standing on the couch looking out a window. I went in knowing it was foolish and immediately realized this was serious. I couldn't breath or see. I navigated to the dog and picked him up asking him not to bite my face. I got out and fell to the ground coughing as soon as the first responder showed up. I told them I was worried about the son and I couldn't locate him. Luckily everyone was out of the building and I am now my neighbors hero for saving their dogs.
It looks like they surgically attacked this fire, found what was burning and put water on it while minimizing water damage. Good job. Vertical Venting does nothing but risk the fire fighter's lives and help the building burn. A house is Not a Chimney and can't function like one. Come on American Fire Fighters! Let's start Thinking instead of following what you've been told. Horizontally vent the fire room windows, go in and put water on what's burning. Cutting holes in the roof will Not help to accomplish that. A window gives the heat and smoke a Direct access to the outside. A hole in the roof does not. Too many "Dampers" in the way like ceilings, floors, walls and doors. A house is Not a Air Tight Flue.

Jeremy G Well done, but you took a chance to save a life. We looked for him as quickly as he could. I’m the guy in the white helmet.
