- Umhome is a Swazi traditional song, a lullaby that was recorded by Miriam Makeba, arranged by Billy Monama and sang by Siphokazi at the First instalment of Spectacular Concerts 25/10/21. UMHOME: “There was a sad Swati song called Umhome that I learned from my grandmother. Umhome was a person with a deep longing or huge grief. Umhome is a Lament I would sing many times in my life. The song told the story about how in the olden days when a woman got married she would have to go and serve in the family of her husband. A woman served because the family had paid lobola”. Miriam Makeba lamenting about her abusive first lover, James Khubayi. The father of her first child, Sibongile (Bongi). This text is an excerpt from the book Miriam Makeba Story.
