    Love her pausing and looking into your face, little brain-gears a’spinning, reading what you’re telling her by your reactions to what she’s doing with her teeth.

    As I grew up I watched my step-father train bird dogs. Great memories. Just a very few minutes into your video I knew you were the "real deal". Thank you for sharing your knowledge and talents with us. I intend to keep watching as we begin training another Labrador Retriever. Great breed. Smart people have smart pets. Thank you. L. C.

    I've got a Lab puppy coming home Feb 19th. Getting excited. I'm also kind of nervous about being a good owner. I think Stonnie's lessons are going to prove invaluable. I check everyday for new videos. Thanks Stonnie.

    Thank you for this video advice! I love that you are showing how the puppy needs your diligence in consistently displaying the right consequence/reward method to keep the training moving forward! Having successfully trained a Labrador eight years ago, and now preparing to welcome another Lab puppy into our home, this is a wonderful refresher course for me to remember that patient diligence is the key to an excellent, calm canine! Again, many thanks for sharing your expertise!!

    Needed this video. I have a mutt but I can tell (from experience in animal hospitals) that she has mostly lab in her. If I had to guess her two main breeds in her I would say a lab and pit mix. But anywho I definitly needed this, my last dog who was also a mutt but past away two years ago but she didn't give me this much mouthy puppy bites.

    Thank you so much for your videos Stonnie. We have a three month old beagle. Our breeder said 5 minutes of exercise per month of age- so that's 15 minutes per day. This is no where near enough to calm her down. Have you heard of this rule? What do you think? Our pup has no hip issues, and the parents have been hip scored and we're fine.

      Stonnie Dennis it seems to be one of those rules that breeders here follow (UK) but I can't find any evidence to back it up. My dogs love their Kongs. But one of them has figured out that if she picks it up and drops it the treat will fall out. But what gets her is if I put a small amount of peanut Butter In her Kong. They go crazy! One of them (my small one) runs upstairs and hides with it, or else the puppy will try to steal it.

    This is wonderful but I'm having the opposite problem. My 11 week old labrador has been in the home for two days and just wants to be in her kennel. She is not over active she is under active. She seemed fine at the farm where we got her. I don't know if it is stress or depression but I'm not sure how to help her.

    You show the dog outside running around with other dogs at an early age. I hear vets want the dog indoors only, away from other dogs until 16 weeks or last shots for parvo and distemper. Thoughts? I can't imagine a lab getting enough exercise indoors...

    • @farfoose

      Usually those things are necessary when going to public places where you do not know the dogs that your dog will interact with. If you know the dogs and you know they have gotten all their vaccines then it's not dangerous. I asked my vet the same question!

    Don't forget to let him sleep at some point too. That's especially easy to forget on the first day when you're excited to bring a puppy home, but in my experience a tired puppy is a grumpy puppy. Letting the puppy sleep seems to be so obvious to dog trainers, that they forget to mention it.

    I love your videos so much! They've helped me set healthy boundaries with my new 10 week old lab, and they've also helped him have sooo much success! I love this approach of tons of exercise plus positive reinforcement. Our new puppy has never, ever been "punished"....yet in 2.5 weeks he's become potty-trained, crate-trained, leash-trained, and sleeps through the night. We're still working on jumping and biting, but I'm confident we can get there. Thanks, Stonnie - my puppy's life is so much better because of what I'm learning in your videos. I didn't know how to train the lab we had before him and I wish I'd found your videos sooner so his puppyhood could have been more relaxed.

    I think I'll try that as an anti mouthing technique. Originally I was growling and correcting as an adult dog would. It was highly effective and was best used when forgiveness was like no more than five seconds after the correction. Never grabbed the puppy, never shook him, on occasion gently took his scruff skin, light enough that he could easily pull away without pain and NEVER lifted him by it. My mother told me that was stupid so I started saying a firm "NO" when he would bite hard. He bit harder and harder and started drawing blood. I finally said the no wasn't working and went back to growling as his adult dog pack does when he's too rough or does something like bite their neck. Within a few corrections he has already slowed down his biting. When I get it to the level that I don't want to smack him because of pain, I'll start doing this technique. Again, don't smack him, only once did I do that and it was involuntary. He got his sharp little puppy canine up my nostril and I bopped him. He did not care.
    H also only bites me and my parents. I take him to stores several times a week and he's just the sweetest little angel. At ten weeks he met a baby. Probably only a year old. I told him to be gentle and he was so gentle he didn't even lick, just sniffed as calmly as a puppy could! No paws, no tongue, no teeth, no wiggles. It's so sweet.

    I have a question. Not particularly pertaining to the video but i have a lab mix puppy. Hes about 8 months old. He is really lean and could be due to the mix breed that i am unsure of. My fiancé started him off with pedigree and i have kept him on that food. What i am asking is, is there any food to feed him that would help with development? I watched the 14 part video series for training for retrieving.

    • @SteveWKk
      @SteveWKk 6 років тому +1

      That pedigree brand is quite literally the worst of the worst when it comes to kibble..... The number ONE ingredient is corn. The second is meat by-products... Not good.... Dogs are omnivores but thrive on mostly meat.... Get a dog food which at least has MEAT as the number 1 ingredient...not corn or anything like that. Costco brand (Kirkland)has great quality kibbles and its not much more than pedigree...
      Let us know how u make out!

    • @radan3242
      @radan3242 6 років тому

      My question as well. He's stated on other vids, 'this is the dog's ration' so, it's breakfast/supper time. I also heard him refer to the food on another vid as "kibble". He's a pro so I can assume he's using the term correctly. If that's the case, he's using small "square-ish" pieces of dried dog food specific to his puppy. I.e., he's feeding the dog an entire meal ration of the food he would normally feed it except, he doling it out one or two pieces at a time during training. He needs it to fit in the space between his index and middle fingers in order to exaggerate the hand signals for the dog. My .02....
