I enjoyed this movie but I absolutely adored Jeremy Brett's performance - what a handsome talent! If there are otherJeremy Brett fans reading this - wasn't he fabulous as Sherlock Holmes inthe PBS series? May he rest in peace.
She did, though. George Bernard Shaw said in the notes of the original play that she did marry Freddy and have a flower shop just as she wanted. The relationship between her and Higgins was always meant to be platonic, as much as they loved each other.
Absolutely. Higgins and Eliza’s story works so much better as unrequited romantic love on his part. By the time he realizes how he really feels, it’s far too late.
I loved JB as Sherlock Holmes. But when I saw the film My Fair Lady, I was blown away. Whether that was his singing voice or not. He was just gorgeous *swoon*
I remember reading the postscript that Shaw was badgered into writing, Eliza indeed married Freddy, and together they borrowed money from Colonel Pickering so they could open a flower shop.
I'm gonna get in trouble for saying this , but too bad, here goes. I love this song , I love this character, I love this actor. I simply must say of all the men I've ever been attracted to he is my first pick. He is handsome in the extreme, has a noble bearing, this regal stature, perfect posture, gorgeous features, excellent speech patterns..... you name it, he's got it. I had this tremendous crush on him for several years, and I'm not a groupie, but I will say I'm a fanboy, and a hopeless romantic. He was just so beautiful, we'll miss him sorely, God bless and rest his soul. Ok I'll stop gushing now, apologies.

Samuel Kirk: The beauty of movie classics like this is that even guys like ourselves can enjoy and envelop how these films enrich our lives........and they hold a special place in our hearts especially because our mothers also shared our enthusiasm in these classics. I lost my mother in 2013 and I share your sentiment. My mother was a 1930's - 1950's singer/dancer. In her later years we enjoyed watching old classics and musicals together. One of my favorite Audrey Hepburn classics is Breakfast at Tiffany's, which is a movie that changed my life. In a world full of such acrimony it is comforting to know that guys like you are gifted with true feelings and respect for art and music that otherwise would stigmatize us. No matter what anyone thinks, you keep enjoying the classics. Thanks.

Freddy Eynsford-Hill, Mr. Brett, was lovely with this contemplative romantic gothic air on his face, in the late english victorian high society, these tender & serious gestures with penetrating gaze. Great and handsome actor. In Sherlock role; it seemed it was made for him, and it was perfecting. He could sing so well, why dubbed?. A "chaskepearian" theatre actor?; the street, the flowers, the streetlight, the buildings; what a beautiful scene!!!, extremaly romantic.

@Lonestarry Right you are, Lonestarry! Classically handsome yet just "geeky" enough to play the love-struck Freddy to the hilt! He was marvelous in a supporting role that added so MUCH to the film. The Lerner & Lowe score for My Fair Lady is wonderful and "On The Street Where You Live" has always been my favorite song in the show.

On this day in 1958 {June 27th} Vic Damone's "On The Street Where You Live" reached #1 on the United Kingdom's NME chart Two years earlier on April 21st, 1956 it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; it peaked at #4 and spent almost a half-year in the Top 100 {25 weeks} Also in 1956 two other versions of the song charted; Eddie Fisher reached #18 & Lawrence Welk took it to #96 And eight years later in 1964 later Andy Williams recorded it & his version peaked at #28 RIP Mr. Fisher & Mr. Welk
I always thought it was Jeremy Brett singing this song for years and tho' I love this rendition, I wonder why Jeremy didn't do his own singing as he is a singer for this movie. I also love Vic Damone singing the song, too! Pleasant surprise that it came on right after, I recognized his voice as I was such a fan of Vic's a long time ago.
+peoniesido , He was actually very unhappy at being dubbed. The studio though his (lovely) voice was too "mature" for Freddy, so they dubbed it, and forbade him from telling anyone. He revealed the secret in the 90s when the film was restored.
He did sing the very first part (at the before before housekeeper opened it). If you listen carefully, it's clear it is two different voices. I also don't understand why he wasn't allowed to sing the whole song.
I randomly met the most amazing and beautiful girl I think I've ever seen a few weeks ago, I know exactly how Freddie feels! It feels nice to unexpectedly fall in love, basically I'm here watching this because I wish I could sing this myself (albeit not in front of her house, that would just be weird lol).
Reading posts. I often questioned if the rendition of On The Street Where you Live was Jeremy Brett. I'm crushed - Not Jeremy. Frankly. I'm a big fan of Jeremy Brett of Sherlock Holmes British TV. Bonus to realize he was Freddy in My Fair Lady. One of my all time favorite Broadway songs/ballads of all time. Vic Damone has a beautiful recording of this song.
What an incredible irony. Jeremy Brett (who turned 30 during the filming of My Fair Lady) was dubbed because his singing voice was considered too mature for the character of Freddy Eynsford-Hill. The dubbing was done by Bill Shirley, who was 43 at the time...
She should have ended up with this guy, I was so pissed that she ended up with that arrogant, controlling, misogynistic asshole Henry Higgins and not this beautiful gem of a man who sang On the Street Where You Live and accepted her exactly as she was
@@3mdick plus if you read the essay written by George Bernard Shaw for the orignal play that Eliza gets married to Freddy and open a flower shop together.
it's sherlock holmes!!!!!....the original one, though the actual actor did have a nice voice...but they dubbed over it regardless, as did audrey hepburns, and natalie wood in west side story.
It was a different man (Bill Shirley) who actually did the singing? I am crushed. It was too good to be true, that Brett would be so handsome AND have such an engaging, brilliant voice. Brett sure did a wonderful job of lip syncing.
+madamerotten , the studio told him not to tell anyone. He was actually very unhappy about it, and revealed the secret himself in the 90s, when the restored version of the film was released. The tried to also hush up the fact that Hepburn had been dubbed, but it was too obvious, and the cat got out of the bag. Ironically, there was no need to dub him at all, as he had a great voice. Just search youtube for actual videos of him singing.
magdavogelsang ___Thanks for that. I can certainly believe that, based on some of the terrible stories I've heard about studio management. Why can't these people just give credit where it is due?
a glittering gem from a bygone era when Broadway musicals and their cinematic adaptations were meant to make people feel good, not depress them and Al Hirschfeld immortalized them in pen and ink. I always suspected Jeremy Brett was dubbed. So, Bill Shirley was the male counterpart of the legendary Marni Nixon.
The idiots thought it best to cut out his (gorgeous) voice b/c they found it too "mature" for Freddy and so we get this obvious dub instead. Neither Brett nor Hepburn were pleased to put it mildly.
+xhaxha ....I heard and saw on youtube Audrey Hepburn singing the songs and i'm glad that she was dubbed by Marni Nixon as Audrey isn't a singer, but she shouldn't feel badly as she got the part she so wanted, i feel that Julie Andrews should've got the part but nothing can be done to correct that now.
+peoniesido Singing was a major part of the role - had they told her from the start she would be dubbed, she might have passed. Instead she worked for weeks on the songs and then without warning, both her and Brett were informed indirectly their voices weren't to be used.
+peoniesido I think the feeling was that Audrey was much more the kind of beauty they were looking for, and indeed, I feel the movie was made for her. Her voice was actually used in one of the songs quite effectively.
Julie Andrews should have been cast instead of Audrey Hepburn in "My Fair Lady". Julie Andrews is a "triple threat" talented act, and it made no sense to give the part to Hepburn instead just because she had a "bigger" name during this time period. Oh well, Julie Andrews still went on from being a "nobody" to one of the biggest and most renowned stars in the movie industry after all.

It was a different man (Bill Shirley) who actually did the singing? I am crushed. It was too good to be true, that Brett would be so handsome AND have such an engaging, brilliant voice. Brett sure did a wonderful job of lip syncing.
Ha, Brett had very engaging voice, it is true :)
Is Jeremy brett the actor who played Sherlock Holmes ?
Yes he was.
Yes! The very best Sherlock Holmes EVER! Wonderfully quirky.
+Bill Hicks Yes, and unfortunately he often took false credit for the vocalization, which is, in reality, dubbed by Bill Shirley.
Bill Shirley is also the voice of Prince Philip (singing & speaking) in the Disney animated masterpiece "Sleeping Beauty".
I didn't know that!! Sleepy Beauty and My Fair Lady are some of my favourite movies.
Thanks! :)
Thanks for uploading this. It's our school musical this year and auditions are next week. Gotta learn this song
0:03 - 3:49 Fine performance by Jeremy Brett (the one and only Sherlock IMHO)
3:50 - 6:26 The best song for "Mad Men" season premiere 😉
this song is so absolutely yummy......it's classically romantic and beautiful:)
Yes, Jeremy Brett was so wonderful as Freddie and Sherlock. He had a good voice, but in My Fair Lady his singing was dubbed by Bill Shirley.
a glittering gem from a bygone era when Broadway musicals and their cinematic adaptations were meant to make people feel good, not depress them and Al Hirschfeld immortalized them in pen and ink. I always suspected Jeremy Brett was dubbed.
So, Bill Shirley was the male counterpart of the legendary Marni Nixon.
I was so angry when Eliza didn't pick Freddy!
The guy lighting the streetlamps must think he's fucking nuts...
Glad you liked it. Thank you for watching.
j'adore cette chanson normal si j'aime l'acteur!!!^^
Wow ❤
Nah. Hepburn was signed on because of her box office power. She was really quite inadequate for Eliza. She wasn't guttersnipe enough.
