I just purchased a big faceted 4 ct ruby for $20. Now I pretty sure it is glass filled which is totally worthless. Thank you for this information.

Sure, it’s a precious stone, the price for 4 CTs should start at least 20000$. However, you didn’t pay much for this experience, it’s a very good thing.

Nowadays, gemstone filling glass has developed a lot. To achieve durability and improved optical properties Adding gemstone filler besides using lead glass. Other types of glass are also used, such as bismuth glass. and gemstone filling substance that does not contain glass. Finding a large amount of filler in a gemstone would not be correctly identified as lead glass filler. Must be examined with the x-ray fluorescent (XRF) tools. To find the amount of lead without looking through a microscope . Advantages of adding lead glass that the ruby has an unchanged refractive index of 1.77, but is not resistant to acids and alkaline. And gems that have this substance added are soluble in water. When used over time, this chemical will dissolve away from the gem. Your next gem purchase There should be certification for gem testing using XRF only.
