    We really liked Atiwa. It's got solid mechanics, and it's pretty darn quick at 2 players. I think the replayability in Atiwa is lower, especially for his games, but for us that doesn't really matter. If we end up playing a game 10 times, that is A LOT. So we honestly don't really care about replayability. I really like the tug of war with your own resource board. That giving and taking we find really fascinating, and we really hope Uwe explores that concept more. Overall a good game, not one of his best but still good,. And the theme is so dang good

      It would be great if he springboards another game off of the resource board for sure! I think the 2-P experience could really benefit from dummy meeples blocking off various slots so that you feel that downward pressure.

      i dig the game. the game has no card ability text. it's quite unique that way for me. it's a comfy euro that's thematic to the theme. heads up, though, the pronunciation for the game is incorrect, they mention how to speak it in the extra accompanying book.

      Thanks for the play through - I very much enjoy your channel.
      When I first played Atiwa I was a little concerned that the game was playing itself - due to the lifecycle mechanism.
      However after playing a handful more games I was pleased to see how there is a variety of ways I can influence that and I feel that there are different approaches you can take to (attempt to) win the game.
      I think you may regard it higher if you were able to table it some more.
      I look forward to your overview of Uwe's games - he is still my favourite designer.

    I said it before and I will say it again. Throw on a Mazzy Star album in the background and chill back with a relaxing game of Atiwa with some good friends and appreciate the calm zen state of the moment. Uwe Rosenberg’s catalog really encapsulates the ebb and flow of life. For every hard smack you in the face Agricola day,there is a balance with a nice relaxing Atiwa or Nusfjord night.

    Thanks as always for the playthrough and review! I had touted this game after playing at PaxU, and it's one of my top games through a specific lens: I'm often the one teaching the games my group plays, and I'm often teaching to new players at public events. I don't think it has as much replayability, and I definitely understand if there isn't quite the complexity there for people who prefer heavier games (e.g. Feast for Odin, On Mars). A lot of the appeal of Atiwa is that it is much easier to teach, faster to get to the table, and is a viable option for someone who has never played anything more complex than Catan.
    From a game design perspective, I'm impressed that this game manages to be easy to play but doesn't bore me. If I invited non-gaming friends to play, they might end with low scores, but they could still play and feel good about growing their tableau and engine out.
    My primary criticism is that there are a disproportionate amount of rules and complexity for pollution (the pollution placement rules, and the card placement rules, which ultimately only matter for pollution), which is ultimately a small percentage of the gameplay.

    • @BeforeYouPlay

      Yeah I think when we saw the “advanced” game tag on the box when it was first released at Essen last year we had hopes of a large/epic game with lots of crunch. The discovery phase of this game was nice, but after several plays we both wished there was a way to mix things up a bit more.
      Definitely a great stepping stone game for newer gamers, and one you could enjoy along with them.
      You’re totally right about the pollution mechanic lol.

    I think it fits a nice Niche in Uwes games in that it is very much Uwe Lite.
    If I don’t have the time or brain power to play a bigger game like AFFO then this plays in around 30-45 minutes but still gives me enough crunch to feel like I’ve achieved a good gaming session.

    I agree that this game is mostly 'OK' and lacks replayability compared to many of his other games. It has two big virtues for me:
    1) It makes for a good introductory game, because it's a fairly easy teach.
    2) The solo is very short but still very fun, though the claim that a solo 'win' is 120 points is either a typo or a troll.
    I will say that you are more scared of pollution than you should be. Also I physically winced at all the goat slaughtering going on lol. The rulebook even tells you not to do that!

    • @BeforeYouPlay
      @BeforeYouPlay  Рік тому +1

      Monique was super loose with those goats in this play lol. In the solo game are all the spots available, or do you have blockers holding you back?

      @@BeforeYouPlay It's like the Feast for Odin solo. You use three colors, going in a cycle: red-yellow-blue etc. In fact in the round tracker this is the reason the round number is shaded, that's the color you use in the solo. So any space you use is blocked for two rounds.

  • @RickKoeppen

    I was positively surprised by Atiwa. My expectation was that it would be just ok after having watched and read plenty of reviews. But what I came to realize after having played it a couple of times is that I don’t agree with the claim that it’s samey and has a low replay value. After a couple of plays, I started to see how tight it actually is in the competition for the different worker placement spots. It’s similar to Agricola there in a sense where the differences are sometimes subtle but play an important role nevertheless where timing is everything. It also has a great solo mode! For me it’s a keeper 😍

    • @BeforeYouPlay
      @BeforeYouPlay  Рік тому

      Great to hear that from you! What player count (aside from solo) have you found to be most enjoyable? We felt that the 2P game could use some dummy blocker meeples to create more tension for space.

      @emmalind4484 Рік тому

      @@BeforeYouPlay I’ve only played with 2 (and solo). I’m not sure whether it’ll get any tighter with more players since you add more spots (maybe). But rather than the amount of spots, I’m referring to the value of the them, (in relation to breeding and what opportunities players have in their tableau). To block each other, I think keeping an eye on these things is crucial.

Even the environmental engine I find quite clever. That said, your video is probably the closest I've found to my feelings on the game. Thanks for always be so honest in your content. Hope to run into you again at Essen. (Full disclosure: I only watched your thoughts on the game, not the play through)

  • @draheim90
    @draheim90 Рік тому

    Played my copy of Atiwa several times and a few people in my group really like it. My thoughts are pretty similar to yours though - it’s charming and enjoyable enough but a bit mechanical and not quite up to the level of his other games. And it doesn’t seem to have much replayability…it feels like it’s missing a mechanism or needs an expansion.
    It’s also a similar weight to Nusfjord and Halltertau and I’d usually much prefer to play either of those over this one, or of course play Agricola/Caverna/Feast/Arle instead. Those six games are all at least a notch or two above this one for me.
    That said, I’ve found it pretty enjoyable to go for a relatively small-family heavy-bat strategy, focusing on getting good terrain tiles and utilizing that unique bat population space. Does create a fun puzzle.

  • @elliottbarker1595
    @elliottbarker1595 Рік тому

    I really enjoyed watching this, having played Atiwa solo I just want to play it more now. Also, one slight rules correction when it comes to the pollution tiles, I believe the correct order to place them is to fill in the top middle spaces on ALL cards, including any cards in lower rows, before polluting the top right space. Meaning at the end of the game Monique should have had 1 tile on each card plus an additional tile on the Hill and the Meadow. It didn't have an effect in this game, but it means that all the locations and terrain should be considered all fair game when it comes to pollution, rather than keeping more lucrative cards on lower rows.

      Hi Elliott! That makes sooo much sense, thank you for pointing that out. Great video having played them all I also agree with a lot of what you were saying. I love the theme and look of the game but I do think the game after playing again and again won’t hold up as well as many of his other games similar to Reykholt. I like both and honestly will probably hang onto both for the random time I do wish to play them but it’s definitely not something I will be wanting to play multiple times a year so If you don’t have a larger collection or space is a concern I totally recommend others maybe trying this and then moving it or trying it at a convention.
