Listened to this first on my shitty iPhone speakers, listened to the whole thing, then immediately scrambled for my headphones and played the entire thing again at full volume with my eyes closed. Best experience of my life. 1:24 got a huge goofy smile on my face with the harmonies, and 2:04 put tears in my eyes when the main melody came back in. What a brilliant cover.
In terms of musical theory, it is because of the pedal tones played by the bass trombone. This typically links our brains to a solid (base) line that starts a journey. As well as the hint of a major key thrown in towards the end really sets the stage for an opening-like piece.
