We are a couple who are building our own home from the ground up in the mountains of West Virginia. After living near the city our entire lives we finally decided to sell it all, pack up our 3 kids and live in an RV on our 73 acres while building our own debt free, off-grid house and learning to live a more self-reliant life.

A friend of ours had a sheep that was brought up with the farm dogs the sheep thought it was a dog it ran with the dogs everytime a car would go up the driveway .
With all the tornadoes breaking out its a wise move to build a safe room underground and behind concrete. The Cafe is a great way to let the public meet and great while having a nutritious bite.
I really like how you two regroup and calmly come up with a new plan when you run into a hitch during a build. It really is amazing to see how you just go into "redirect" mode without getting upset and angry. It's like you find an even deeper drive to make it work. You set a great example for others!

Good to see the boys out there helping! Go team! And you can teach them some good construction techniques! Yes shoveling does build character. You've probably heard the one about the college guy that hired on for the summer to work construction. He almost completed his degree in structural engineering. He reported to work with a group of summer hires. The foreman was handing out assignments and tools to the new crew. The foreman handed the almost engineer a shovel. But the college man said to the foreman, " Sir, I almost have my engineering degree". The foreman replied, "Oh I'm sorry and took the shovel back." He then handed him a rake and said, "I thought you were experienced".
That is the most inquisitive (not to mention cutest too) lamb ever. It seems like it wants to know what you are doing at all times.

Also glad you realized the misalignment of the rebar before it was perhaps to late. It's not the first time you have to redo something but what is good is that you realized it before it would have become a bigger item to correct. Love the way Ellie helps and the boys help with things that require strength. Josh you are a good example to them and what you are teaching them will help them with life. Great stuff... thanks for showing more of the rebar details... I get how it goes into the footer (I think) and then the first part of the rebar sticks up about 3-4 foot above the footer, then seems like you are doing a 4 foot or 6 foot foundation ring of concrete so more vertical rebar will be needed for that... can you please make sure to show how all the vertical levels of rebar connects with the wire and everything... very interested in that safe room... thanks! Best family channel on TV.

Hello Josh. I have watched you and Erin as you progressed. It's cool to see a couple like my wife and I were 20 years ago. I am building a steel and wood barndominium near buy your location. We will be in the Bean Settlement just off "The Corridor". I see in one of your previous video's that you were going to be using some structural steel beams in your addition. That's what I do. So if you would like I can review your steel needs and fabricate for you, if you don't have anyone yet.

When I worked construction 50 years ago, we had that same tool for tying rebar together and we called it a pigtail... looks like one. And no matter what crew or company I worked for, everyone called it that, but that was in Oklahoma. WV folks may call it something else. LOL! "Dead nuts On"... it's a highly technical term.

Having reinforcing steel in the middle of the wall isn't utilizing the steel strength. If you are only placing one mat of rebar you should have them 2" from the face of the wall away from the soil you are holding back. The steel helps the concrete resist tension forces such as soil and water pushing against the wall.
