I love finding these newer channels, they are fun and refreshing and they don't have that attitude of "you will watch me regardless of what I make" and just rehashing the same content over and over. thanks for this.
I'm using the Panasonic S1, and switching over to the S5II X camera next. It's missing the internal ND, but it's better suited for my run and gun style of work. The image is quite fantastic to work with, especially with Prores HQ support. Between FX6 and BM cameras, I would rent the Ursa 12K for fiction projects, because I don't need autofocus in those scenarios, love the 12K BRAW codec, and I really like the Super 35 sensor format for filmmaking
Sony's are just unbeatable in terms of usability and practicality in my experience, but I've never in my life seen better footage than when I tried out the URSA 4.6K G2 for a 3 days shoot. But the harsh truth is that most people and clients don't care about that extra 10 % image quality to sacrifice the usability and practicality from the Sony cameras. Nice video tho. New sub here!
Thanks! Definitely agree with you that clients won’t necessarily see the difference. So if we consider that, it really comes down to what WE enjoy the most. And that’ll vary from person to person. Some people will want the BEST image. Others will want the usability and practicality. ☺️
When I'm doing creative projects such as short films, music videos, & fashion vids I utilize my Ursa 12k. When I'm doing corporate work I usually rent out, Fx6's.
@@JohnCastillo Overall image quality … Highlight rolloff, Being able to film in 8k or 12k depending on the shoot (8k faster read out of the sensor…in 12k a bit more dynamic range & whatever noise will be invisible when you export in 4k)… Braw along with Color Management in Davinci Resolve…etc 8k, 120fps and higher… This camera is amazing. I’m so happy I purchased this camera over others near its price point for the work I enjoy doing. The camera is basically future proof over the other cameras near its price range. BUT I would like some updates, like gyro data & other codec options…etc. The more codec option, is so I can hand off the footage to clients (H.265...etc).Some of my clients didn't like the fact that the Ursa only filmed in Braw.
I’m sorry but the images coming out of the black magic Ursa is absolutely gorgeous. Super 35 is the film standard and had been for decades. I’m personally not buying a cinema camera for auto focus.
I feel the same way about Sony and Blackmagic. I can't afford the URSA 4.6 G2 or the FX6, but I can afford the A7S3 and the Pocket 4K, and they both work well in the two use cases you outlined. Because a lot of what you pointed out about those cameras, are things that both manufacturers try to incorporate in all their products. That said, there is one area where I think BM wins hands down, firmware updates.
Thanks Ben! I’ve thought about using a teleprompter but I feel like I improvise a lot, so decided not to. I do write a script though! And then I sort of loosely follow it. Good to see you here ☺️
Hello! Thanks for the video. Do you possibly know the latency on the SDI output for FX6 and G2? Could FX6 for example be used for IMAG in live concert. How much latency is to much for IMAG? Thank you!
I'm not sure about the numerical value of latency off the top of my head, but I can tell you that I have used Sony FX3, FX6, and FX9 for IMAG in live concert. It had a bunch of effects layered on, so delay was a bit less of a concern, but it worked for our needs.

@@JohnCastillo I will pay you, if you make a "scientific" test of output latency from this cameras. This information in non existent on the web.
I've been using Blackmagic products since the ATEM television studio and have had a rocky past with them. On the digital cinema camera side of things, nothing but positives. I've owned the Ursa Mini 4.6K, PCC4K and the PCC6K pro and they all performed great. I was apprehensive at first to suggest them for purchase based on my experience with the company on the broadcast end. The early ATEM line was finicky to say the least and their convertors were notoriously hit or miss. Don't even get me started on the failure that was the Intensity Shuttle USB. It's odd seeing the company lean so hard into broadcast with their past being what it is, but I suppose so much has changed in the industry over the past 10 years that budget dictates all. This lean also saddens me in the aspect that I fear the company will devote more time to developing that side of the business, allowing their digital cinema camera family to fall to the wayside. The URSA is now being transitioned into a broadcast camera and the PCC line is just repackaging the same camera with slightly different features. It's odd to think the next camera I purchase might not be a Blackmagic, but I thought the same thing back when I was shooting on a Sony, Panasonic and Canon respectively.
You didn't mention the changeable mount on the G2, which allows it to use PL and B4 lenses. The latter is great for the whole broadcast environment - not sure if the Fx6 can use those B4 lenses.
True! You can use adaptors with the FX6, but it’s certainly not the same as having a native mount! I talk about this a bit more in my latest video, comparing the URSA Broadcast G2 with the URSA Mini G2 ☺️
I do documentaries mostly and use BM for interviews can’t find better image quality…sometimes I need gun and run /gimbal camera and here I am thinking on Sony FX3
The photo lens is a Canon 70-200 with a Sigma MC-11 Adaptor. No autofocus though. I’ve heard that the metabones adaptor does have Autofocus (the Sigma one is “only compatible with Sigma”)
Hi John, thanks for your video. Since our work changed more intooo TV-Live Production with BMT equipment, we will prefer the Ursa. 24 month ago it would have been the SONY, because we where more in filmproduction. What lens do you use with your Ursa? many greetings from Switzerland 🙂
In this video I had the Canon CNE 18-80. It’s great to use with Zoom and Focus handles. We’ve also used the Canon CNE 70-200 for the same reason. Both great lenses and *reasonably* affordable against the competition for cine servo lenses.
Autofocus is robotic it will never let you work pro, UA-camrs lie to people to bay new and expensive Camera, and at the end of the day nobody of them tell the truth.
I think it very much depends on the vein of work you’re in. If you work in cinema, you’ll have a focus puller and blocking in order to ensure focus and focus transitions, as well as large monitors, and multiple people referencing them for lighting, framing, and yea, focus. But there are so many other professional lines of videography - such as corporate interviews, documentaries, advertisement, music videos, conferences, wedding videos, event live-streaming. My company works in many of these and we use autofocus all the time ☺️ sometimes as simple as autofocus and locking it off. Other times continuous AF for tracking shots, or even “Push AF” for conferences & live streaming! I don’t think it’s that black and white.
my question is why people not buying ursa mini pro 12k it's much better high resolution my question is why people not using ursa mini pro like Sony fx6 or fx9 . I’ll never understand how people can prefer sony cams over the black magic ecosystem. Braw and the cohesiveness with resolve has made me never want to shoot on anything ever again. Not to mention the god awful cumbersome Sony menu system. Good autofocus isn’t even close to making it worth it for me. But to each their own.
I think it honestly depends on what you’re working on! I use Sonys a lot because I record a lot of videos run n gun, and videos where I’m in front of the camera. That being said, whenever there is a crew, setup time, and I’m behind the camera I would certainly say the Blackmagics are preferable. As for the menus, honestly I just have them memorized at this point 😅 I barely notice them being difficult anymore.

Hello maybe you know where to find volume knob missed on bmcc? 😅 seems in preview picture your missed them all 😂
Such a great video!
The Fx6 is perfect on paper but I want to love the BM more. The internal battle of what I want vs what makes more sense 😂
Me Right now!!! Still haven't made the decision. It's been 2 months!!!!
Get the fx6. I love the BM a lot more but resell is awful :(. Like really bad
What’s the name of that adapter that you have on the canon 70-200 with the fx6? And does the autofocus work well when using that adapter?
Unfortunately, it doesn’t work at all. I’m using the Sigma EF to E adaptor. I think the Metabones would work with Autofocus but I haven’t tried it.
Damn these are getting to be awesome! Teleprompter? I've started using one and it's AMAZINGLY helpful 🧐😜

The 12K has less codec options
12k has a smaller dynamic range compared to the G2 also. Range>pixels.
Like mentioned already. Has less dynamic range and you can only shoot BM raw.
Fx6 is downscale 6k and I think that's better 4k
Hey, you're mixing it up with the FX9, which is 6k downscaled to 4k. The FX6 uses the same sensor as the A7SIII / FX3 which is basically natively 4k.
