Kenny Clarke might be the most underrated drummer in jazz. Everyone talks about Tony Williams, Max Roach, Elvin Jones, Art Blakey, Phily Joe, but I rarely hear Kenny being mentioned.
You just did! He's very important to American classical, & popular music, and 🥁Jazz drumming, just like Sonny Payne. But, that's America for ya! Ya dig⁉️ The public knows the 'Imitators';... the🔎 Craftsmen🥁 and the Kats🎶 know the "Innovators"❗💯BDM
I agree with you my friend and I'm a Drummer myself I've been checking out different other jazz drummers that no one never heard like for example Jeff Hamilton, Billy Higgins, Shelly Mane, Alan Dawson, and others those drummers are phenomenal especially Clayton Cameron with those brushes
What a fantastic player, and remember that Klook was at the forefront of bebop drumming! He, Max Roach, Stan Levey, and Art Blakey were the fathers of that style of drumming. Kenny Clarke was a clean, crisp player who was known for dropping bombs (bass drum kicks), syncopating with his left hand. We all learned a lot from Klook. He was like a head of state in France. They loved him. I love him. 1985 was a tough year for us drummers. We lost Kenny, Papa Jo Jones, and Philly Joe Jones in that year!
@@PatrickManzecchi Yes, Shadow was a beautiful player also. Great point. The last few gentlemen whom I mentioned all passed in the year 1985. The same year that Kenny Clarke died. Mr. Wilson passed away in 1959 at a young age. Yes, I agree, he certainly does deserve to be mentioned. Absolutely. Thank you. He was a superb brush technician and all-around drummer.
@@joecaroselli5858 ...Unfortunately, we lost Shadow Wilson from a heroin overdose. Roy Haynes is still with us, and also last survivor of the modern jazz drummers during the first generation, which was the 'forties.
I recently learned that Philly Joe Jones hung out with Kenny Clarke a lot and they were always practicing rudiments together. Neat to see one of the elder inventors of bebop drumming pass down his love and knowledge to a drummer who would dominate jazz and post bop jazz in the 50’s and 60’s. The torch gets passed. How lovely this happened. Share what you know with others! And young ones, go hang out with your elders. The fruits of that can change the world.
I'm so glad you mentioned this. Philly Joe is one cat whose style reminds me the most of Kenny Clarke. Unbelievable chops and ability to make the snare drum speak, both of them. And their ride cymbal beat...wow.
The father of modern be bop drumming and listen to that ride beat....always accepting the last note instead of the first! Very unique and truly swinging. Love Kenny Clarke!

It is recognized that Kenny Clarke was the real innovator of Bop drumming. I always loved Philly Joe and I can see who was a major influence on PhillyJoe.
I once had the privilege of talking to Max Roach after a gig and he told me he imitated Kenny Clarke's high hat set up with the larger cymbal on bottom, smaller on top. He said it sounded better.
The larger cymbal on the bottom and the smaller one on top reduces the vacuum and allows for a louder chick that is guaranteed to sound every time the cymbals are closed. I used it before and I’m going to do it again ..., tonight!!!

so much beauty in what Kenny Clarke does. and jesus that left hand---
Perfect! It's all right there in Kenny Clarke's playing.
Fantastic player.
This is the first time I have seen Kenny Clarke live. What a legend!!
Great Kenny Clark.so small kit but he can make unique sounds of it.Minimalist and focused to the real need of the music.Fluid!!!!
Talk about a faraway look in his eyes! I think that his brain has simply turned his eyes off entirely so that he can feel the rhythm. Pure focus.
I noticed that too he seems to be tranced out almost. Talk about in the zone
The modern-day equivalent of that is Jeff "Tain" Watts. Totally locked in, shutting off the rest of existence. _Incredible_ concentration!!
