Nice interview! Dotty it's really interesting to hear about your school and social experience when you moved back to the states.. What part of the East Coast were you living in?
I think my Mandarin level is similar to Dottie’s, because I also grew up in the US. However I am full Asian so everyone in Taiwan speaks to me in Mandarin first. First impressions are so interesting. I also agree with another comment that 4th grade math in the US is like Kindergarten math here. I would finish my math homework before the teacher was done in class, throughout elem and middle school.
10:53 the reason they speak English to her initially is because she does not really look East Asian. She can pass for Latino or Persian but not so much East Asian. Sadly, her Mandarin sound better than mine even though I lived in Taiwan until I was nearly 12 years old.
It's always cool to me how much mix-raced people vary. Sometimes they look perfectly mixed and sometimes more like one side. She looks way more European to me than Asian -- but I can still clearly tell she is Asian (and specifically Han). Genetics are so fun!
3:18 yeah I totally get what she means. I started fourth grade in the states, and we were doing math that were taught to me in Kindergarten back in Taiwan 😂 that was the only class I never had to study! The downside to this is that by the time I got to high school, and because I neglected mathematics the whole time up to that point, I found that I could no longer keep up with advanced trigonometry courses. Math at that level was like learning Greek to me 😂 There goes my ambition for a career in astrophysics 😂
I had an even more extreme experience. I went to the US to study in HS after spending almost all my childhood in Taiwan. I remember that I had a difficult time understanding anything. I didn’t even know what words like addition or multiplication so that I had to bring a dictionary to my math tests while everyone else brought calculators. I still finished the tests before everyone because I could immediately know the answers once I understood the questions.
Even though im fully Taiwanese I relate to Dottie a lot. I was born in Taiwan to Taiwanese parents but grew up overseas so in Thailand and US and then 20+ years in Canada. I spoke mandarin (conversationally)at home and spoke Taiwanese (very basic) to my grandparents. We eat Chinese food, celebrate Chinese New Year etc but somehow never wanted to connect myself with my chinese culture. I live where there is huge amount of multiculturalism so there isn't racism against Chinese or anything like that. I know physically i look Chinese but culturally and everything else is pretty westernized.
That’s interesting that Taiwanese speak English to her. As a mixed American (black/white) visiting Taiwan people would speak Chinese to me And they would speak English to my Taiwanese girlfriend 😂 (she is an aboriginal and many think she’s a Filipina or Thai)
One of the reasons why mixed race people will lean more toward being American, is because they are full accepted in the US. Nobody in the US would ever consider her to be a foreigner. People are just going to assume she is American. But in Taiwan if you don't look fully Taiwanese you will always be perceived as a foreigner of sorts.
She didn’t mention this directly, but every sane person is leaving the SF Bay Area over failed progressive policies. Taiwan is a much better place to raise your children 💯
Your right wing fantasies are getting in the way of your perception of reality. The Bay Area is a hot bed of creativity and the entrepreneurial spirit. Unless you are a troglodyte you are surrounded by products that were invented here. There is a generous welcoming spirit here and we enjoy the bennefits of having many races. Homelessness is a problem yes but that is true of most big cities, particularly the ones with warmer weather. We can get through this too.
Why are most of the hapas a AF/WM mix ? Don't the Asian men have any chance of dating and marrying ? We Asians need to get out of the rut of thinking all mixed marriages involve Asian women

Oh my gosh yes! Exactly this! By high school I had forgotten how to study because everything was so easy up until then 😂
I moved to the US in sixth grade. I remember math was more like third or fourth grade level in Taiwan. I dont remember doing any math in kindergarten.

I'm also from the US so I understand where she's coming from
Hope all your families can stay here in Taiwan
She's soooo beautiful!!!
Beautiful girl..
Enjoy your time in taiwan..
She is stunningly beautiful.
Dottie
So every children of parent with 1 Taiwanese and 1 American is classified as 'Half-Taiwanese' in ROC, that is a silly policy.

Can i call the Taiwanese ABC( American born Chinese)? or i call them American .

You dont even have to guess these days on whether the Dad or Mom is Asian.
What do you mean by that?
Why are most of the hapas a AF/WM mix ? Don't the Asian men have any chance of dating and marrying ? We Asians need to get out of the rut of thinking all mixed marriages involve Asian women
