That was the most mature and well-measured review I have seen. Wow! Btw, in the first few bars he says “I await you.” - the printed lyrics are off. Your review is really quite “on” and I want to thank you for tackling one of my favorite songs at your age 🤓 The look on your face when Bono goes off into outer space is perfect!
I am a bit flabbergasted to know people of your age (I’m ballpark…15 years older?) Haven’t heard the Joshua Tree album. This was considered alternative at the time. Bono is/was an incredible singer. Where the Streets Have No Name and I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For are the other two hits that became mainstream. The whole album is amazing and a classic.
Where would they hear it? Everyone downloads their songs and listen to them. Idk if radio is that big anymore and if it is I'm sure it's geared to the pop of today. Kids aren't listening to "oldies".
@@differencemaker242 What were people doing before 2005? I mean, even assuming Cliff was born around 1990, that's plenty of time to be exposed to U2 before digital became really mainstream for music consumption.
Top level song. Top level album. Top level singer. Top level bassist. Top level guitar player. Top level drummer. Top level Band. Top level everything. U2 🤟🏻

Don't watch the video if you do that song. It's a nice video, but it cuts off the intro and outro with talking. Should not watch the video until you've already heard the album version or a good live one.
It was famously used in a friend’s episode maybe that’s were you heard it before 😃 Obviously the song has taken different meanings over the years as many U2 tracks do . But the song was originally written from Bono’s perspective of being torn about being a world famous rock star in the biggest band in the world. The temptations that brings of women, drugs and a certain lifestyle. While also being a husband and a family man. How can he be both, how does he live with those two lifestyles. Not necessarily be both but how do you resist those temptations and be a family man ? He has been married for 40 years this year I think it is which is unbelievable in that industry. U2 have been around for just over 40 years. So he managed get something right 😃 Great review 👌 Try these U2 songs One Pride Mysterious Ways Bad ( live aid )
The Joshua Tree was written lyrically by Bono specifically for & about America. Bono was so adept & brilliant lyrically, that he he could write songs with a surface meaning & a deeper more macro meaning as well. While this song is written in a person to person context, it is also a song written by the world to America. Bono is a outright genius & Poet Laureate for a generation.
Thanks for your reaction and yes Bono has an emotion filled voice. If you love lyrics, you’re in for a treat with U2. As they say all Irish are poets, philosophers and drunks. Don’t know about their drinking habits, but their lyrics fit the first two :-) ‘One’ is famous about a bad breaking up full with heartbreak and beautiful imagery. Wake up dead man is about a man in dispair, wanting Jesus to wake up and help him, Sunday Bloody Sunday about the horrors of terror wars as is Bullet the blue sky, Running to stand still about the wreckage caused by drugs, Miracle drug about a boy being locked in his own body and being partially cured by medicines (true story), Sometimes you can’t make it on your, Love is Blindness (check out the live Melbourne version) and Beautiful day have it all in the title and Every breaking wave about not chasing after every other fad but having the courage to allow yourself to be swept away by love. These are just a few of the top of my head and there are many more. Their life performances are amazing as well. Enjoy the ride! Another group with amazing lyrics is the Cure. A nice start lyric wise is Just Like Heaven, Pictures of you and Doing the unstuck. A great singer with beautiful lyrics is Tori Amos, if you want to be hit hard, check out Me and a gun sung a capella and is about her own rape: ua-cam.com/video/wWxZW2zj7PQ/v-deo.html
I'd always kinda enjoy whatever random u2 song would popup on some streaming curated playlist, but it wasn't until I heard "One" that I felt compelled to dig into their discography... f'n great song
Yeah it was 1987 and some of those songs were amazing to chill with a girl. This was when there were 4 tv channels, No internet, No cell phones it was before all the stuff we have today. This was when we started buying cassettes instead of records.
The writing on Joshua Tree is just pure poetry, every song. He sang this song in dedication to his dad when he was struggling with cancer, the emotion of this song those concerts was unreal. U2 - October/Bullet The Blue Sky (Live in Paris 2015) I think you'll find the writing and performance, really the experience of this one interesting.
I love this beautiful song so much. I grew up on U2, specifically the Joshua Tree album. Nostalgia hits hard but it's a classic! Legends. ❤🔥 You should check out, U2 Sunday Bloody Sunday
My U2 top songs in no particular order: With Or Without You (the #1 song of u2) One Love (best song to sing along) Sunday Bloody Sunday (the guitar intro is immense and the context makes it an alltime great) All I want Is You (I love the intro and the break so much) Lights of Home (strong chorus) Magnificent (so funky and I love the bright and playful, sexy vibes) Stuck In A Moment (best campfire song) Ordinary Love (just overall great) Vertigo (so energetic) Beautiful Day (my favourite)
U2’s music is my “medicine for the soul”. Since I’m native German, I became a even bigger fan after learning the language ( I live in California since 1998) Their songs guided me through life and helped me especially during a very emotionally time in my life. I would love for you to listen to “ Ultraviolet- Light my way” and while you do so think about this true story I’m sharing with you. My husband of 25 years was laying for 1 week in the hospital after a fetal heart attack. His brain got so badly damaged because of lack of oxygen, that he was pronounced brain dead. The day when they turned of his breathing machine I was with him and I was aloud to listen to music. I had a playlist from U2 playing. Song number 8 was Ultraviolet and during the first quarter of the song he suddenly opened his his after laying in a coma the whole week. He just had them open looking at me, no blinking, just looking. Toward the end of the song they closed again and at the beginning of the song “Love Is Blindness “ he passed over peacefully. Today I know he was speaking to me, his way to say goodbye. I’m incredibly thankful for those precious memories and I’m grateful to be a fan from this incredible band, that brought also so many friends into my life and many dear memories.
Totally worth watching the live performance of this from the Boston 2001 performance. One of the most incredibly emotional live performances I have ever seen ❤
And please do the band’s original version. They reimagined the song later as a duet featuring Mary J. Blige, which is terrific-but all the pathos and complex energy is in the classic, original recording.
Bono stated in the past that the lyrics to this song referred to the tension in his life between his being a musician and also being married. He couldn’t live without either facet in his life, but they were often at odds with each other at the same time so living with them posed just as much as a challenge.
oh MAN I'd LOVE to see you dissect the true meaning of "Sunday Bloody Sunday" or "New Year's Day"!! U2 are actually famous for some very politically-charged songs, and not just ones revolving around topics in their native Ireland but other countries too, America amongst them!
Check out U2s earlier stuff when they were still in Ireland. War, Boy etc. Bullet the Blue Sky is another fantastic song that shows more of their political nature. Also, check out the documentary "It May Get Loud" which featured The Edge, U2s guitarist, Jack White and Jimmy Page.

love U2! Always great lyrics. I wonder if you will check out a blues/jazz singer from Northern Ireland. Her name is Kaz Hawkins. Not many people in the US know her, but she has the most powerful voice like an older, mature voice of Angelina Jordan (maybe:)). A couple of her songs "Surviving" and "Lipstick and Cocaine" are powerful. Her cover of "I'd rather go blind" is the best in my opinion.
If you really appreciate great lyrics, you will do no better than Bono my friend. Stray off the beaten path and checkout songs like One Tree Hill, Running To Stand Still, Bad, Kite, All I Want Is You and God Pt2.
I think this songs about a young couple. They haven't had sex yet because the girl wants to wait until she's married. The guy's growing more and more frustrated with her because he wants sex and he finally wears her down. She did it that one time thinking it would satisfy him but now he wants it all the time. They break up and she has sex with all her boyfriend's because she's no longer a virgin. He's seeing her live like this now and realizes what he lost and if he would've just been a bit more patient he could've had exactly what he wanted.

Interesting that you interpreted the lyrics as being about a human relationship. They can also be seen as describing spiritual quest. Check out “Where the Streets Have No Name” as another beautifully written song that can be interpreted multiple ways.
my problem with hip hop and rap is that after the first ten seconds youve heard all the music - it never changes. thats why eminem stood out... he had choruses. its why hip hop and reacters are best for new music... because most other genres change music throughout the song. please try nine inch nails.

You know that the technical fuckup that caused the removal issue was Apples fault, not U2's, don't you? Such a shame that that's all a whole generation thinks of now when they hear U2. I can see why the band thought it'd be a good idea but the execution was an utter disaster and has pretty much ruined their legacy...

That long guitar note is from The Edge’s Infinite Guitar. It was designed so that if he held a note on the guitar it would stay through the note.
