I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt:
I'm an artist, usually draw with charcoal, and one of the hardest things to learn is to stand back, look at the big picture and say when it's time to stop. Because your work can never be 1:1 with the image you have of it in your head, but there is a point where you have to know you've done all you can do.
I hope the creator of HiMH learns that lesson from his work, or else it'll only get worse.

Honestly, if it ended at the first reveal, with Anthony saying that there will be no more uploads and handing over the channel to the police, I think this ARG would have been sooooo much better, and so much more interesting as a case study to what it seems it was trying to say.

This series was like a roller-coaster. Awesome in the beginning, exciting, getting ready to have a great time. Then you go downhill after the first peak, but this is a roller-coaster for young kids at a state fair so it peters out quickly and you're stuck going around and around going over tiny hills with no end in sight

Spoilers warning for anyone looking at the comments before the end of the VOD
At around 1:16:20 when Anthony was analysing the video descriptions, I had a thought that maybe the idea was going to be that the project was about an unfiction character becoming self-aware. But that's the thing though, I started to think it was about a _character_ going off the rails while being trapped in a deliberately-poorly-written story, as things progressed, I thought the reveal would be that Dr. Tanner and the other guy would be the creators, trying to get their characters back on track.
But the ultimate ending, with Anthony and Hollis droning on about "sending the audience a message" was convoluted and seemed desperate to prove itself as cleverer than it actually was or even needed to be. The idea of "The twist is that it's a messy and unsatisfying unfiction project" had so much potential, but they took too long to get there. And I get it - knowing how to pace a mystery and how to insert foreshadowing in a way that provides substantial clues without giving the game away are arguably the biggest challenges of writing a story.
I get the impression the real creators of the project got so invested in it that they lost the forest for the trees; they could have benefitted from some peer review to help them keep things in perspective and simplify things down a bit - and there's no shame in that - a good, honest peer review is often essential to making artistic projects of many different types work.

"Dudebro finding out that mental illness isn't like what he sees on TV" is not what I expected out of this video. But here we are.
For a kid living with his parents he sure does say "MY property" a lot.
Putting aside that this is supposed to be a teenager I think? The thing that was jarring to me was how the therapist didn't seem to know the names of his patient's parents. And just accepted the fake names without question. That seems kind of poorly written to me.

Seriously though, as someone who's watched everything on the NightMind channel, I really enjoyed this format as well. I'm not a big fan of livestreams, but this is great. I appreciate the work put into editing and not having loud noises for subs and stuff making it a worse vod experience and taking away from the content you're analyzing. It's been... a week? A few weeks?? (what even is time) since the debut and I haven't STOPPED thinking about Hiding In My Home. I can't stop thinking about how I really loved the artful take the original videos had. I can't stop thinking about how good of a twist the first discovery actually was. I can't stop thinking about what this story COULD have been. And worst of all, I can't stop thinking about how frustrated and disappointed in me as the audience member the creators seemed to be telling us they were at the very end, when they were chiding us either for playing along with something dangerous or for falling for an obvious fake storyline like... the TONE the creators took in the last leg of the series comes off as bitter and resentful and I have genuinely no idea if the creators realize that's how they sound at the end. I think that's why you should never try to get presumptive about what your viewership is actually thinking - if you find a thought process or something in the comments specifically and get frustrated with it, then project that onto everyone else, then other viewers just kind of end up catching strays even years after the video was posted and done.

it seems like the story here should have ended after the discovery of the flash drive. after that, the protag has evidence of hollis committing a murder, and almost all narrative potential was expended at that point. maybe let it run a bit further to when the protag realizes the meaning of the bag symbol, then cut and end the series. the 'regional protectorates' thing feels like an attempt to invent a new plot wholesale, just to keep things running. another big issue is, with them advising him, the audience loses their role
as the story goes on, even though hollis is clearly the killer, i also think the audience increasingly associates with him over the other guy, simply because hollis increasingly becomes the only intelligent character

Gosh, I'm glad I learned about unfiction before encountering it. God knows that while I was still ignorant of the genre, if I'd run into a sufficiently realistic unfiction project "in the wild," so to speak, and illegal shenanigans seemed to be afoot I would have unintentionally rained all over *everyone's* parades.

  • @LiliVS9

Yeesh being there for the first half I had no clue it got this nutty. Watching the VOD I think I realized why this didn’t work for me: it started as a death note kind of story but it suddenly tried to make itself into blue velvet with the underlying suburban mafia thing. Problem is, aside from not being able to portray the seedier stuff among other things like blue velvet, this story didn’t have the base for it and didn’t set up for that kind of story anyway. It’s like starting with a sour dough base and then suddenly trying to make pasta out of it. People are gonna find it off putting instead of a cool twist. I do hope the folks that made it have another shot at a new story cuz they do have chops but just need to refine it a bit.
PS. Also missed opportunity to have Hollis and his roommate be a thing so we could make “be gay do crime” jokes but alas we can’t have everything lmao

the writing in the third act is such a tragedy in terms of losing sight of the plot threads and the character motivations falling apart - BUT, that said, I think there's something still very compelling about watching Anthony's descent into madness, that in hunting down Hollis so doggedly, to the exclusion of reason and logic, to the exclusion of safety, Anthony falls into the same pit that Hollis crawled out from. There's something dark and delightful about seeing an ordinary guy just trying to find out what happened to his brother become the same kind of lunatic as the man he believes _killed_ his brother. With a bit more thoughtful execution, with maybe another pass at the script to clean it up, with the cutting of excess fat. Maybe with Anthony's style of video editing slowly devolving over the course of the series from that initial, very clean, informative video where we meet him into a tangled, paranoid mess of editing to match Hollis' arthouse madness.
Ough, with just a bit of refinement, the third act of this series could have been absolutely delicious. We lose our first protagonist to the realisation that his eclectic style might be true madness, and then we lose our second protagonist while we watch that madness creep up his spine and throttle him. Even with the way it fell apart, what incredible potential to have dug up from the first two acts, goddamn.

I wasn't crazy about the Anthony reveal. As soon as he appeared on screen and started explaining that this wasn't Hollis' house I kind of saw the direction it was going and I just didn't see Anthony as a likable protagonist. I wish it had stayed even the original concept of "Everyone's gone and these spirit things are harrassing me." The videos were visually and conceptually amazing and had me sucked in. Maybe the contrast of going from one to the other with 0 warning is what put the sour taste in my mouth.

This series died after episode 14. Once Anthony came in it REALLY derailed to a terrible degree. IF Jordan was an actual child who died and knew about this series before his death and wanted to be apart of it, this was an awful disservice to him. Otherwise, I don't know what the last video is about other than it is them lamenting that this project failed and "Jordan" is really the project name somehow. Either way, spending 9 hours on this series feels terrible and it is a real shame. I'm glad it didn't turn out to be a Sophie or Hiimmarymary situation, however it could have stuck with the supernatural cat and mouse game a lot more and it would have been much better. I felt every single emotion Nick did while watching this, as someone who greatly appreciates not only unfiction but writing as a whole. This series infuriated me beyond belief and it has the same issues I see with modern cinema for horror. Fantastic premise, strong beginnings, terrible follow through, and an ending that never fits the plot. This is something more story writers, be they movie writers or book writers, NEED to do. THINK OUT YOUR PLOT. Please. You need to have a goal to get to. How do you end this? THEN create or expand on the beginning. The middle bits can be figured out as you work BUT the starting conflict HAS TO HAVE A RESOLUTION. Your audience WILL know if you half-assed your ending because you didn't think about it. They are not dumb. In fact that is one point that I also despise. Constant reminders or filling in the blanks with unneeded exposition. IF YOU HAVE TO EXPLAIN IT YOU DIDN'T DO A GOOD JOB WRITING IT.

While I don't think I'd be able to catch them live because I struggle to watch streams (making my primary fandom hilarious), having them edited down to remove any extra fluff like start/end/pauses + add context where needed is PERFECT for me! Up until that point Anthony had been talking about how little he’d been able to find out about Hollis, so did he just make the names up and hope the doctor wouldn’t notice, or did he have their names this whole time and just do nothing with the information?

Way after the fact - but the believe ability went way down when Anthony mentioned his brother was kidnapped. The police would always be involved, and monitoring the family since they are normally the first suspects. Plus when it is a child of a certain age where are the search parties? I haven’t finished the story yet but if the little brother didn’t exist at all I wouldn’t be surprised.
The story would be stronger, imo, if there was just a stranger in the house leaving cryptic messages

Gonna have to decide if I'm watching this stream or waiting to see if it gets covered on Night Mind main. I decided to take Nick's usual advice and check this out beforehand. I'm about halfway through. Curious to see where the story is going but the acting could be better (forgivable tbh), but I imagine Nick has some things to say about some of the character choices. This stream migh also illuminate what ARG elements I missed by watching it after the fact.

I was there for the first few hours of this stream i remember just waiting for it to get better. I ended up falling asleep during it and rewatching the vod while it was still on twitch praying that the end qould come back around to the good of the beginning and it never did. I was so upset cause this series had so much potential and it felt wasted.

Well, congrats on the new model, looks great, honestly goes better with your voice imho.
As for the the actual content, I'm an hour through the VOD and as much as I love the big plot twist for this story...
I'm on the second video for the new guy whose brother is missing, and this guy's frequent dropping of F-Bombs feels forced. Like... This guy feels like a teenager who wanted to do an edgy horror story and thinks "This motherfucker killed my fucking brother and I don't give a fuck what he thinks" is mature. I'm having flashbacks to Creepcast reading "The Thing In The Basement" and Hunter just saying fuck every other word as a joke because of what the sister was saying.
We'll see if this goes downhill... Though glancing at the comments I think it does.

That being said, a knife is a knife, I guess. You can do a lot of damage if you know what you’re doing.

I’m only about an hour and a half in but this makes me wish for one of these unification stories where there is the plot twist of a third party suspecting the artist alluding to a murder, only for them to get in contact and realize the original artist has no clue about the missing person and just assumed someone had gotten into their account to add what they think should happen with the story again… and go from there

Aside from the occasional strong moments that came after, I feel like the series really dropped off with the reveal of Anthony as the protagonist. The acting wasn't working for me and introducing more characters just amplified the problem. I do agree that there's something to be said for ending a project, but this one really felt like a non-ending. To me it comes across as the creators writing themselves into a corner and decided to pitch the script and make the story "meta". Granted, this is a truncated version and I can be really dense, but if the creators have to tell me to my face that there's a message and I can't discern one, I think there might be an issue.

I would appreciate a full VOD being available on UA-cam, as while I'm sure edited VoDs are great, i enjoy the full flow and experience of a complete stream with full context, but rarely have the opportunity to enjoy a stream start to finish live. Twitch ads are unbearable, and have horrific audio balancing. The worst jump scares are an ad popping up.

In software/game development there's this concept called 'creeping featurism': a problem that projects have when you begin expanding and adding things to the project to the point of excess. I feel like that's what happened here: the creators had one solid idea (the initial twist), but then they kept adding and adding and adding to it until it became this bloated, unfocused mess that is impossible to give any sort of satisfying ending to.
