  • "Crimson and Clover" is a 1968 song by American rock band Tommy James and the Shondells. Written by the duo of Tommy James and drummer Peter Lucia Jr., it was intended as a change in direction of the group's sound and composition.
    "Crimson and Clover" was released in late 1968 as a rough mix after a radio station leaked it. It spent 16 weeks on the U.S. charts, reaching number-one in the United States and other countries. The single has sold 5 million copies, making it Tommy James and the Shondells' best-selling song. It has been covered by many artists such as Joan Jett and Prince.
    In 2006, Pitchfork Media named it the 57th best song of the 1960s.
    Following the release of "Mony Mony", Tommy James wanted to change direction of the group's sound, and began producing his own material. At the time, James said this was out of "necessity and ambition", wanting to move from singles into albums. He departed from the group's principal songwriters Bo Gentry and Ritchie Cordell, and was given complete artistic control by Roulette Records. The title, "Crimson and Clover", was decided before a song had been written for it. The combination of unknown meaning came to James as he was waking up, comprising his favorite color -- crimson -- and his favorite flower -- clover. (There is also a species of clover native to Europe called the crimson clover.) A song to fit the phrase was written by Tommy James and bassist Mike Vale, but was scrapped. His following collaboration with drummer Peter Lucia Jr. was more successful. During the song's production, Roulette Records wanted a new single, so the group agreed to release "Do Something to Me" to gain time to complete the song.
    "Crimson and Clover" was recorded in late 1968 in about 5 hours. Tommy James played most of the instruments, while Mike Vale played bass and Peter Lucia Jr. played drums. The song contains a tremolo effect on the guitar, set so that it vibrated in time with the song's rhythm. Near the end of the recording, the band had an idea of utilizing the tremolo effect with vocals. To achieve this, the voice microphone was plugged into an Ampeg guitar amplifier with tremolo turned on, and the output from the amplifier was recorded while James sang "Crimson and clover, over and over".

    I am 69 years old and in 1969 this was my favorite and most played song by me that year. I still see the orange and red stripes of the Roulette Record spinning around my phonograph. I remember Cousin Brucie on Tuesday nights counting down the top 14 songs of the week. I remember tracking Crimson and Clovers beginning on the charts and ascent to the top and then descent and falling off the charts. It started in the Spring of 1969 at #14 it's first week. Then climbed to #5 it's second week. Then in it's third week climbed to #1 where it stayed for 6 consecutive weeks. Then it slipped to number #3 then it's 9th week slipped to #8 then #14 in it's 10 the week then left the charts. It ended up #5 song of the year behind #4 Get Back by Beatles #3 Honky Tonk Women #2 Aquarius/ Let The Sunshine In by The 5th Dimension and #1 Sugar Sugar by The Archies
    I also had a poster in psychedelic red and green with Clovers sitting on a red splattered background with Tommy James also on it. I had long hair and got my first girlfriend at 16 years of age 😀

    I'm of the Baby Boomer generation and I'm pretty good at music trivia from the mid to late 60's and beyond. I was with my adult son one day recently nd he started singing "I Think We're Alone Now" so I asked him who he thought originally did that song. Of course he said "Tiffany" to which I replied "No. Tommy James & the Shondells!" 😁 He googled it and incredibly, his mom DID know something after all!! LOL I had forgotten that group had so many great songs! Thanks for bringing back so many great memories!!

    This is perhaps the GREATEST psychedelic classic of all time. I can't think of another tune that captures it all in its embryonic majesty. I think that every human on earth past the age of 18 should drop a hit of good acid and listen to this song repeatedly.
    With repeated listenings, I declare this recording as BRILLIANT; this is in the sense as one of the all time rock classic tracks--in the realm of Layla, Stairway, Freebird, Purple Haze, Hey Jude, Jumpin Jack Flash, etc.

We are still together and doing well, BTW. Several years ago, pre-Covid, my husband and I saw Tommy James and the Shondells at the Palace Theater in Greensburg, PA. Great concert from start to finish. Towards the end of Crimson and Clover, I got chills then had tears streaming down my face! That’s never happened to me before or since. Amazing and wonderful! I bought a Crimson and Clover t-shirt after the concert and wear it when I need goosebumps ! 😊

    This is one of my very favorite songs of all time. I was in high school when it came out,It always makes me think of a very beautiful girl I had a tremendous crush on. She passed away some time ago with breast cancer. I will always think of her when I hear it. Rest in Peace you sweet angel, Phyllis Pope Gibson!

    I'm almost 64 years old and in my opinion this original long version is THE best version. The WAWA pedals, the Vietnam era, hippies, the crazy 60s, etc. Joan Jett's version can't touch this version!

    I was born in November 1968. At that exact time, this beautiful song got released as I learned on this website: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crimson_and_Clover But it took me 52 years until today I listened to it for the very first time in the movie "The Sun is also a Star". I was so mesmerized, I had to check the song out which brought me here!

    • @Goochisms
      @Goochisms 8 років тому +5

      The guitar represents the wild up and down emotions that falling in love bring to pass. The "Crazy part" represents the pure joy and elation of these two souls affirming their true love for one-another. The lyrics serve as a cipher for the the song as a complete whole.
