I would have bailed on the pre shave oil and the Harry’s shaving cream and replaced it with the van der Hagen 4-piece shave gift set. It costs $24.99 and it comes with a brush, brush holder, bowl and an actual hard shave soap. So the gift set, plus the DE razor for $20.99 and the Nivea post shave balm, that would have put you at $52. Just barely over budget for a WAY more satisfying shave, in my opinion. 👍🏽

This is the kind of video that could help someone try wet shaving without spending a lot. Skip the shaving oil and Harry's cream. Shaving creams like Proraso make thick, cushiony brush lathers. I don't know if Target had any but there are under $15-20 synthetic brushes out there. Even a $2 can of Barbasol would be better than the Harry's cream. The bottom line is that there are better options available for beginners. I agree with you that a better razor would give the kind of shave that experienced wet shavers enjoy. And you can never go wrong with Nivea. Once a newbie gets hooked, the rabbit hole gets bigger 😉

I'd disagree with you on the Barbasol.
It has zero slickness in.y experience.
You'd be better off using cremo or a shave stick..
I don't think that Harry's will have anything decent as far as shaving cream is concerned..
Cremo is the best retail option..oh and would products sold at CVS are great for what they are..

It’s fascinating how many different reactions are to the Van Dar Hagen razor; to me it was not mild at all. It literally was aggressive for my face, and I couldn’t get a shave without a cut. Yet others find it the opposite. I guess faces are different. To me it was very aggressive; faces must all experience different razors. People seem to either love or hate the Van Dar Hagen.

I actually started my wet shaving journey with the Bevel kit. The Bevel shave cream is actually not bad, you do need to build the lather with the brush. The Bevel 3pcs razor is mild and did a good job. To this day I still use there balm, really like it. The Bevel kit was a good place to start. Sometimes you can find highly discounted at Target.

Both Nivea aftershave balms are absolutely worth looking into. Readily available quality products. The one you bought is lightly scented and doesn't contain alcohol, the other is a bit more "traditional" and intense with alcohol.

Nivia do multiple post shave balms, neither the "sensitive" (dark blue label on white background) or "sensitive cool" (light blue label on dark background) contain alcoholic (and are lightly scented). The same is true for their sensitive shaving gel. I've never tried their non "sensitive" products.

My wife bought a VDH kit - a brush, soap, the razor and in addition some of their shave butter, which is a shave cream and aftershave balm in one they claim and that was what i learned to DE shave with. The little brush i got was a synthetic and i still use that today now and then.
It's a reasonably cheap method of starting to DE shave and if you decide to carry on at least you can get the basics of technique and lathering learned before dropping a bucket-load of cash on other products. That comes a bit later!

Cremo will lather a bit more than Harry’s. Not as much as good shaving soap of course but it is slick and in my experience works for a quick shave. As does, btw, hair conditioner that does not lather. Neither need preshave product but hair conditioner works for that too. For me the most important part of wet shaving is the “wet” part - meaning the brush, soap, and water. The inexpensive boar brushes available locally work just fine - especially after breaking in. For a razor available when traveling or “stranded” the Gillette Skin Guard is excellent. Has two blades but spaced so as to not have hysteresis effect. I just started wet shaving with DE razors a month ago. I bought the Bevel Shave Cream along with the Van der Hagen safety razor. After getting over the nicks and cuts of the first couple of days, I started getting some skill with it. I bought some Harry's Shave Cream a week or two later to try it. THUMBS DOWN! It's terrible! They must have a different purpose in mind for it, possibly to be used with their cartridge razors, (which I had been using for the past few years). I'll try other shave creams to see what I like best. The Bevel cream is fine for me for now--and I even bought the Bevel Safety Razor as well a couple of weeks in. I'm 68 and had never shaved with a DE Safety Razor in my life. (I had a beard from age 20 to 50. Prior to growing my beard, I used an electric shaver on the rare days I needed a shave, and upon shedding my beard at 50--done in a barbershop--I have used cartridge shavers.) I just got fed up with the process, particularly spreading shaving cream on my face with my hands. I first decided to get a shaving brush to take care of the hand application, and I quickly thought--"Why not try going totally old school?" I did and I find I am much more engaged in my daily shaving process, rather than just being faintly irritated by it, to the point of skipping days just to avoid the process. I now actively enjoy shaving.

As there is no Target in Germany I replace this with the drugstore chain Müller, and as a specification, getting a cheap set for someone who wants to see, is wetshaving with a saftey razor for me, or getting an emergency kit.
    Razor: Wilkinson Classic (incl. 5 Blades) -> 2.95 €
    Soap: Speick Shaving Stick -> 3.15 €
Brush: Aveo Men (own brand), pig bristle -> 2.99 €
AS: Aveo After Shave Balm -> 2,95 €
At all round 12 €, and it is quiete a decent experience, though I do not like the Wilkinson Blades. You can switch out the razor and the AS and still stay quite under the 50 $ price limit.

Interesting vid. I'm certainly not rich 😭 and having been a heavy goods vehicle mechanic for 30 years I know the joy of working with good quality tools. Therefore I always buy the best I can afford no matter it be a spanner, kettle or in this case shaving products.
At 63 I've only just switched to de shaving and while interesting as this vid was I feel if anyone deciding to dip their toe into de shaving may well be discouraged from picking up a safety razor again after using these products.
I did what you suggested and started with a 34c. I found that a tad mild and also I must have got a bad one as the blade protruded more one side than the other which revealed itself when flipping the razor. Typical, if I fell into a barell of tits I'd come out sucking my thumbs 😡 hey ho.
I now have an Edwin Jagger R366 CRSR Black & Chrome paired with Proraso Red soap finishing off with Red balm and couldn't be happier.
My advice to anyone pondering on joining the brotherhood spend the most you can afford but choose wisely and I guarantee your first razor won't be your last once you catch the bug 😏
I live in 🇬🇧 and quite 🤢 with envy that we don't have such prestigious shaving outlets here like Razor Emporium and Shave Nation.
Come over and well be more than happy for you to take our British Dollars 💵 🤣😂🤣

Great video! I hope we get some converts. Put a Feather or Bic in that puppy and you would have a little better experience! I actually won't start a shave without my Shave Secret oil. I've been using it for years, and started with it during my cartridge days. It's thin and doesn't clog. I use only 10 drops and use it for insurance, even with my $20-$30 soaps. Cremo shave cream was great in my cartridge days, but once I started with Proraso Red and TOBS Sandalwood with a brush, there was no turning back. Once I discovered the Arko stick and shaved every day with it until it was done, tallow-based soaps are the only way! Slickness AND cushion. Now, I'm knee deep in artisanal soaps. Thanks again!

Seat of my pants!!! Oh dude, I cringed when you went for the Van Der Hagen. That was my first DE razor, and it treated me real bad. Newbs want smooth so they don't stop with a mild razor until they have horrible razor rash. That's what happened to me anyway, because I didn't know what I was doing. There's mild, and then there's too mild. Hindsight being 20/20, in a Target I'd grab a King C., a can of Barbasol, and some Duke Cannon balm. If they didn't have a King C., I'd grab a mach 3.

  • @DervishD

WOW, not in my area! Here, the usual alternatives in malls and supermarkets, unless specialized, are multiblade disposable razors of course, plenty of them, and maybe a couple models from King Gillette, from their new lineup, the infamous Wilkinson black plastic one (which is not bad IMHO) and, some local rebranding of Chinese made razors which in turn resemble the heads of some Gillette Tech. Not bad, but not as impressive as your findings! No Bevel, not VDH, etc. at least here in Spain, anywhere I've tried.
And that's for razors, for blades is even worse, most of the time they don't sell them, or they have King Gillette's and/or Wilkinson, period.
Brushes? Even worse. Before, I could at least find the boar one from Wilkinson but not anymore. Now the one I can find is some rebranded boar brush, Chinese made, with the stamp of the supermarket chain selling it, but it's the same in all of them. The smell is horrible, the quality very poor, and it's not cheap.
On aftershaves, since they're a product you can actually use even if you use disposable razors, I have plenty of choices.
I live near Madrid and my only option is Internet. I bet I could find some specialized store in Madrid but they have closed most of them and the ones remaining are expensive and with not a lot of assortment.
All this said, if I had to go to a local supermarket here I would buy a stick of shaving soap from La Toja or LEA (local brands, very good) for about 2 euros, a boar shaving brush for about 6 euros, Wilkinson black plastic razor including blades for about 8 euros, and a nice aftershave of your choice, averaging 6 euros for quality products, so it would be about 22 euros, which with current rate is a bit more than 22 dollars but not that much.

However, that doesn't make the Weishi a bad razor, just not as good overall imo. A badger shave brush with a quality shave soap will obliterate any canned goo or brushless cream, bar none. Shave oil is totally over-rated. It clogs anything including a straight razor where it just coats the edge so it can't do it's work at 100% efficiency. It also ruins brushes leaving them not able to absorb water as it's now covered in oil. I've used it once and had to shampoo the brush afterwards to stop it gripping my face with the oil.

One thing I envy about Americans are their variety. Nivea is a German brand and dove I feel is French but either way European… and in Europe there are no options. The biggest stores sell the same shit and if they have a more refined piece that’s not over marketed you find either an in-home brand or at most 2 options.

I thought it was an ikon clone of days past? Maybe that would have gotten a better shave than the harry’s razor?

I have some generic brush but looking for something better. Is the van der hagen shaving set for $26 worth it? It come with a brush, a cup and some shave soap.

I tried out the dollar shave club shave butter at target before. It's alright. smells nice, but is clear, so kinda hard to use i suppose! Probably better for lining up stuff. The Harry's post shave Balm is great! I love it! it smells so good and is soothing! Honestly pretty good! The Nivea Balm is nice too! Soft, smooth, and clean scent! Great video Matt it’s interesting to see the choice in the States. So, here’s what I’d of picked, obviously we don’t have Target 🎯 in Switzerland 🇨🇭 but in my local supermarket I have these available.
Razor 🪒- King C. Gillette (20.00€) or Wilkinson Sword DE razor. I think the King C. is an excellent 1st razor, it’s what I used to learn DE shaving.
Cream/ soap 🧼 - Palmolive cream (1.46€) or Speick Men Active soap (10.00€) or Nivea protect & care cream.
Post - Nivea aftershave balm as you used or Speick aftershave balm or Proraso Wood 🪵 & Spice balm! Yes that indeed available but only that one 😆.
Seems the razor you used it the common supermarket one in the States. But I have to say…… my Rex Konsul is the best 🪒 ever! 😆👍🏼. Have a great weekend & thanks for the awesome content!
