I saw the director's cut in theaters it's the better version of the movie it improves the characterization of the supporting cast and adds more to the plot
This video convinced me to pick this up, and it is truly a great release. The packaging, the 4K quality, the sound, package design and disc art are superb.
I feel the director’s cut is world’s better than the theatrical version. I feel the AV is reference quality. It’s just as I remember it in theater. It’s sort of a fabric cover. The packaging is stunning. The problem I have though, is NO BONUS FEATURES. This makes me crazy. This beautiful release deserved a director’s commentary at a minimum.
this box and version of the film is absolutely stunning and i loved the directors cut so much, it really took the film from a good film to a masterpiece.
I held off on buying the bluray because I had seen the director's cut in theaters and knew that was my preferred version. Was so happy when this got announced and I preordered it within half an hour of learning about it. Got it about 10 days ago and it was just as impressive on my home theater as I remember it being in theaters! Plus, there are so many background hints throughout the movie that you pick up new things on a rewatch.
I am really jealous.. I am on the wait list being that this sold out by the time I found out (which was only a couple days since the announcement) Ever since I had seen the directors cut in the theater I have been waiting for the physical release.
I picked this one up myself and yeah it was definitely worth it! Packaging was sick and the quality was 👌🏻👌🏻 Other A24 Limited Edition Blu-Ray/4K I’d love to see •Hereditary •Uncut Gems •Good Time •The Lighthouse •Moonlight
*“Hereditary”* got a 4K UHD BluRay courtesy of Lionsgate, in 2018. This was for the US but the 4K UHD BluRay is Region Free, the BluRay included is Region A locked.
Hey Jeff, been watching your videos for a while now and you're my favourite channel that covers physical media. Your passion for physical media is great to watch and I've enjoyed learning a heap more about the more technical aspects of 4k and sound. Was wondering if you had a letterboxd account? If you do would love to follow you there. Cheers :)
Have you checked out channels like SpareChange or Cereal at Midnight (my personal favorite)? If so, what do you think of them? Hoy do they compare to Jeff IYO?
Amazing release. I shelled out a decent amount to get the French Blu Ray version which included the theatrical and director’s cut in amazing packaging. The 4K packaging is amazing. Hopefully it goes back in stock!
I'm still waiting for my copy of the blu-ray version to arrive. I heard this release has no menu and no special features. Is that true? I know A24 is know for having next to no special features but with a premium edition like this you think they would had some sort of special feature.
This movie isn’t scary to me. It is just too surreal to feel tangibly terrifying. Heriditary, is a MUUUCH better film and has better pacing and acting. I also think it feels more grounded. Though, I can admit Midsommar is a technical wonder.
Just wanted to say THANKS! I sadly JUST found your channel but this review locked it in for me AS SOON as this is restocked with A24 I will be making the purchase. I hesitated because I thought it was a little over priced for just the one disc but the packaging & the details you share about the over all quality both physically & of the film are awesome.
I am interested in picking up the Directors Cut. But I may just pick up the Director cut off Apple TV. I actually would like Uncut Gems to get this kind of Treatment
I hate you so much for this one lmao, i totally missed out on the first run. I'm still checking that site DAILY. I wish it had the theatrical as well but I still can't wait to have a beautiful 4K edition of the best movie of 2019.
Got my copy as well. For $50, I wish it would have included the theatrical along with the Director's Cut and some special features. It would be nice to have the ultimate version. Either way, it's a fantastic demo-worthy disc and the package feels quality. I'm hoping more companies offer direct-to-consumer UHD releases going forward that may not sell well to the mainstream crowd.
I just got A24’s The Green Knight Collector’s Edition, do you think you’ll review it? Would love more people to support that release - my favorite film of last year. Great review of this edition of Midsommar!
Thanks for letting me know about this! I heard the original cut got an NC-17 rating and had to be cut down. Hopefully I can get this, when it's on sale again. It would be interesting to see what they had to cut out.
Loved the movie. Own it on Blu-ray and watched it on 4K on Prime. I'd sure like to see this director's cut, but I'm not willing to spend $50 on it. I'll be patient and hope for either the price to come down or a more mainstream release of it. Thanks for the review!
Guys I picked the 4k theatrical cut up from Amazon Italy for 17 euros. It's a great movie in my opinion, but I understand why it's not for everyone. Picture and sound are fantastic
My favorite film of 2019!! Great film. Love all things A24. Saw theatrical and director's cut in theatres. Director's cut fleshed out more of the characters motivations and story itself. Everything about this 4K package of the film looks great and exciting! I hope they release a no frills 4K director's cut at considerably lower cost because $50 (including shipping) is really too much for me. It doesn't include the theatrical release (which I own) or director's cut on blu ray or digital code. (and you also mention that it doesn't have atmos...?) The artwork and design all sound very nice BUT for what it offers and the cost is not comparable. I am a collector and truly loved this film but hope to see it lowered. Who knows , maybe they'll have a sale...
I have the Theatrical on Standard Blu Ray. I also have the Director's Cut on Blu Ray, but it's region B. So I can't watch it from the disc. I had to rip it to my PC to watch it. My Favorite film of 2019.
I want this on my shelf so bad. I Google Midsommar 4k every day to see if it's back but to no avail. They better release a ton this time cuz the Scalpers are making bank on this selling it for 150$. I'll never pay that for any movie. I just wish it had the Theatrical version because I prefer the flow to it to the Directors cut.
Could you compare the 4K quality of the disc with that of streaming? Prime video has the theatrical with HDR. Wondering how it compares in quality to what you've seen on Blu-ray.
I watched Midsommar in theaters back in 2019. It was a confusing slow burn film. Did everyone die that movie? Some of the characters disappeared and never heard from. Does the director's cut explain it? I got the 4K of the Collector's Edition of The Green Knight. It's the same packaging as the Midsommar Director's Cut. Choice of a single 4K or Blu-ray with exclusive bonus features, excerpt of the poem with annotations of David Lowery thoughts, screenplay of The Green Knight's challenge, and concept art costumes of the characters. It would cool if A24 does Collector's Editions of The Witch, Ex Machina, and The Spectacular Now.
I really need this version. Hoping for a restock so i dont have to pay $125 afternarket. This is my favorite movie of the past few years. Still havent had a chance to watch the director’s cut.
Just got this disc, it was amazing except for the fact that there are weird motion artifacts happening in the dark scenes at the beginning and also at 58 minutes the disc froze and skipped ahead to the 62 minute mark. Looking into getting a replacement disc.
I did, but the freezing in that spot still happened. A21 sent me a replacement disc really fast. The motion happens probably because of my TV only having 60FPS, I see it in various degrees in other shows and movies during dark scenes.
Did the replacement disc fix the skipping at the 58 min mark? Because that is about a third of the way through a 171 minute movie on a 3 layer disc (100gb), so it could be an issue with the transition from the first to second layer of the disc. If the replacement didn't fix it then it could be a player issue, SOME Sony players and previous gen consoles had issues with layer transitions on some discs. The Panasonic 820 doesn't seem to have this problem.
@@Tim._.. Yeah, it didn't happen with the replacement disc. That's crazy that those players had layer transition problems though! I have the Panasonic DP-UB420 player and I haven't had any other problems.
Thanks you for another great review. I ordered my copy a couple of days ago and can not Waite to receive it. I hope the colour is a bit better than the standard blu ray. You are right it is expensive especially in the uk. £70 was the cheapest I could find in uk. It reminds me of a movie called the wickerman which I am a super fan of. And have all the physical media which you can think of for that movie. Sad I know) thanks again for a superb review. Andy from England.
Jeff (or anyone for that matter), any word on a physical release for A24’s In Fabric? I heard that they were doing a horrible “manufacture on demand” disc pressing, but it’d be nice to get a quality physical release of at the least, standard Blu-ray. Also, anyone know the status release-wise, of A24’s Saint Maud?
Ugh, it is SO frustrating that there is no basic 4K release and the only way to get the 4K is in this expensive, hard-to-get collector set... I guess I'll have to go for it as there is no other option, but it does look very nice.
Hey Jeff, just a curious question. What 4k player and TV do you have? I have a Panasonic UB 420 and a Samsung QLED 60 4k tv but I’m not sure if I should swap my Panasonic for a Samsung M8500 4k player. Thanks
Nothing wrong with the Panasonic UB420, it's virtually identical to the UB820 other than lacking analogue outputs which most people don't need. It was a bargain for what it offered, though the UB450 has replaced it (much the same for a similar price). Samsung don't make players any longer so I'd stick with what you have unless you're having issues.
Ross Tarran Oh okay thanks for the tip. In terms of picture quality and color, would you say Panasonic wins or Samsung? I watch a lot of animation and I find my Samsung blu ray players delivers more color and less washed out colors than my Panasonic 4k player does. I’m not sure why
@@smokebonde9943 Panasonic have players with very good picture quality at all price points right up to the UB9000 which is one of the best players available; any should be at least as good as a Samsung of a similar price (though as I said, I wouldn't get a Samsung now as they're no longer in production). The color difference may be due to a setting on the Samsung player, or just the output being more colorful, but you could tweak the input settings on your TV for the Panasonic. There are also settings on the Panasonic player itself worth playing with - and remember HDR settings can affect color if watching a 4K disc.
Ross Tarran Okay thanks perfect, yeah the color seems to be more of a TV/player thing I’m assuming. I just find that Samsung Blu Ray Players deliver more color and vibrancy to DVD’s and Blu Ray’s but for 4k I’d say Panasonic delivers a crisp and beautiful picture. I might just keep the Ub420 and play with the settings until I finally find the perfect picture quality I am looking for for my DVD’s and Blu Ray’s. From my experience, I find Blu Rays and DVD’s to be way better in color when I play it on my 2013 Samsung FM57C series whereas 4k discs are more crisp and beautiful on my Panasonic UB420. @@smokebonde9943 No problem, it can take a while but I'm sure you can get things how you want with enough experimenting. Australia iTunes release is only HD. It’ll cost me $80 AUD to order the 4K disc ffs. I hate how we get screwed over here in Australia. We miss out on so many 4K releases.
One aspect I was hoping you would cover were the supplements that were completely lacking. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love the packaging, it’s fantastic and they deserve a lot of praise for it, but for something they is 10 bucks more than the msrp of a criterion, the disk is barebones , only including a black screen asking if you want subtitles or not. That’s pretty disappointing overall. I hope with future releases, they take the time to add more.
John Davidson thanks! I appreciate that. I do work a marketing role in my day job but this is really all I’ve done with video. Hoping to bring this into the day job - you may see me on another UA-cam channel some day lol!
@@JeffRauseo Well I wish you all the best. Do you get contacted by studios and such often? You said A24 reached out to you....does that happen more often than you contacting them?
Apologies Jeff...for some strange reason the video started way after your review of A/V quality. Excellent review as always 👍 I will be purchasing this version 👍👍
5.1 has been around literally forever, I don't think you can call yourself an enthusiast if you don't have at least a 5.1 setup, minimum a premium sound bar, atmos, yeah a lot more rare. I'd be surprised if 4k/hdr tv's outnumbered multi channel audio systems though.

So much hate for this movie. I love weird occult horror movies and this is a good one! Cool packaging but I’ll probably stick with the regular blu
when will they restock?
Australia iTunes release is only HD. It’ll cost me $80 AUD to order the 4K disc ffs. I hate how we get screwed over here in Australia. We miss out on so many 4K releases.
The uk Blu-ray has both theatrical and directors cut
I wanna see a uhd release for "The Wolverine" but probably won't happen
I love this movie. Does anybody owner of this 4K Bluray knows if it has spanish subtitles included?
Can you review hereditary on 4k blu ray 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
There are french subtitles ?
One aspect I was hoping you would cover were the supplements that were completely lacking. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love the packaging, it’s fantastic and they deserve a lot of praise for it, but for something they is 10 bucks more than the msrp of a criterion, the disk is barebones , only including a black screen asking if you want subtitles or not. That’s pretty disappointing overall. I hope with future releases, they take the time to add more.
I liked the theatrical cut better. Wish both versions were included.
I have a couple of Arrow releases I’d say are still as good or better than this one just due to premium packaging, AV, and extras.
I really wanna get that 4K UltraHD BluRay of Midsommar off Amazon.ca
Hey Jeff. Love your channel. What is your day job? How do you get copies from studios?
John Davidson I work a regular day job. 8-5 grind. This is just a side thing
@@JeffRauseo Well, you seem like a natural in front of the camera.
John Davidson i typically reach out myself.
Picture and Audio quality??
I covered it...
I’ve paid $100 for laserdiscs, so $50 is not extreme.
4k midsommar is on Amazon prime
I feel Amazon has the best streaming for 4k.
I've failed you Films at Home, I bought this on secondary market. I've should've listened to your advice and waited for restock discs
Dude. Ouch. It’s like $150
Such a beautifully made movie. I just wish I had liked it more. I mean visually it's stunning, but story wise it's an absolute let down.
These went way too quickly :( Bet your ass I’m on that email list now.
I thought the movie was bad, so disappointing after Hereditary. Only seen the standard version once though.
