All the trucks, all the planes, all the boots and all the food the Allies sent to USSR were quintessential to USSR success in the Eastern Front. In the meantime other Allies defeated Germans in Africa, Asia and Europe, especially in Italy and France. There would be no march on Berlin if it wasn't for Western materiel and money, and Western sacrifices in other theatres of the War. Not to mention that the WW2 did not end in Berlin but ended only after the defeat of Japan, which russia had nothing to do with. Also, the USA entered the WW2 in December of 1941, the same month that Battle of Moscow was concluded (almost to a day). So no, russians weren't really marching on Berlin by then yet. And they were able to stop the Germans only thanks to US military aid which started in June 1941. It's not nice of you to lie about historical facts. The Western Allies could have done more by supporting people in those European countries fighting against the soviet occupation well into the 1950s. Not to mention they had the leverage of the atom bomb and were stronger militarily (as mentioned, russian army depended on Western handouts).
You were'nt handed to the USSR. We hated it happened. We feared Russia with its new captured industry in the rest of Europe would try to roll over the rest of Europe which was why NATO became a thing. The simple fact was that Western Europe and the US was not willing to immediately launch into another war to free Eastern Europe straight after one that had already cost millions of lives. You've just fought a hard five year war and think you've won, and are then immediately asked to fight another war against the nation that was your ally until a moment ago - it wouldn't have stood. Do you think an exhausted Europe would have wanted another major war against a battle hardened enemy? It's awful yes, and Churchill wasn't at all happy about it - witness the ion curtain speech - but another war simply wasn't an option.

Our dictator (Todor Zhivkov) used to say that the guy was very hard to work with, and that he was envious of the fact that Bulgaria was in the center of USSR Balkan politics (According to Zhivkov). Zhivkov spent much money making himself beloved by the people, so when 1989 came around, he wasn't executed, but some years later reabilitated (d. 1994), and currently has near-mythological status. Some people still keep his photo on them. I wonder if he had instituted such draconian measures as Ceaușescu we might have had more money to jumpstart our economy after all the harm communism did to it, but that's a question for the ages. Bulgarians care about western Europe and the US far more than they do about Romania, yet I think it's like the calmer, more educated neighbour that lives upstairs and tries to do the best with what he has.
@samgomez2064 I am from a red family and have MUCH better understanding of it than your tiny brain can possibly comprehend. The ordinary people had no clue what contempt the ones around Zhivkov held for their subjects. The genocide of my nation today can be traced back to their actions then. Zhivkov cared for their needs, not so much those of the people. He was a marionette... a ruler of a satrapy. His "greatness" as a politician lay in his ability to be a subsurvient lackey to Moskow and get resources in return. This is the meanig of the motto "от векове за векове". He was right in his understanding that Bulgaria will always be dependent on bigger and stronger states. Yet in my family he was always known as. "Toshkata". My great-grandfather was one of the people that fought for Communism under Fascist rule. For that, the fascists incarcerated him for 7 years, while THE COMMUNISTS for 9. Because he was more loyal to his nation than to Moskow. I have in my personal archives a photo of him and other communists posing for a picture - he is in the first row and Zhivkov is in the last. So I am from a red family but we were never allowed to yield real power. Do you undrstand the nation's history now?
@samgomez2064 If not a tyrant, then a satrap, a Moskow marionette, as were all rulers of eastern block states. :) I am from a red family and had access to private conversations that most people don't. The contempt of the red elite for their own subjects was so total. They were like counts or barons ordering serfs around. The king above them was Zhivkov, and his political "greatness" lie in his ability to placate the red elite and be subsurvient to whoever was the red emperor way over in Moskow. He at least understood that Bulgaria will always be dependent on bigger and stronger states, empires and alliences. This is the meaning of the motto "от векове за векове". He was a lackey, a ruler of a satrapy, who got resources in exchange for the most servile behaviour imaginable towards his higher-ups. Once he was no longer useful to his barons, they overthrew him, sold themselves to new masters, and have been ruling since as before. I'll then agree he was not so much a dictator as a satrap.
It was a kangaroo court and their execution was not necessary. Also, the accusation of genocide was 100% false because *Decree 770.* But he was a dictator and his dream was to make Romania like North Korea. And he almost succeeded.

@@mojojojo1529 russia didn't beat the Germans. Allies beat the Germans. Russia had a chance of beating part of Nazi army only because of material support from other Allies.

This is incredible.
It was a kangaroo court and their execution was not necessary. Also, the accusation of genocide was 100% false because *Decree 770.* But he was a dictator and his dream was to make Romania like North Korea. And he almost succeeded.
I'm not British and wasn't born till the turn of the 21st century but for some reason get nostalgia watching this. How cute of a people to call a holiday "boxing day" Totally normal island over there
