  • "We're Not Safe Here" is a scary horror short film from Christopher Cox (CACox97), the creator of "Don't Look Away." For three longtime friends, a camping trip turns into a night of terror and insanity when one of them tells the story of a mysterious creature called La Mimica.
This terrifying tale of fear and paranoia takes inspiration from contemporary classics like The Thing (1982) and modern successes like Among Us. When you don't know what to trust, how long can your sanity survive?

Easily the best part of this short was just how clever and tricky the monster was, the only way I see the campers having a chance of surviving is if they came more heavily armed, which was unlikely given that they meant to have a very casual camping trip. Props to you and the rest of the crew for this one 👌

Thank you Reshiram! Definitely one of the goals for this film was to paint realistic characters that made believable choices based on their own bias and unpreparedness for such a powerful entity. It’s also then super fun to rewatch after knowing the truth. Makes the film a whole different kind of creepy 😁

I really like how la mimica knew its approach wasnt working at first so once it knew he was too scared to open the tent on trust alone, it switched tactics and made him think his friends were in life threatening danger so he would throw away caution just cause he wouldnt want his friends to get mauled and it be his fault just cause he was scared of a "prank" especially with that scared "I'm sorry" to attack his emotions even further

  • @andrewdowns9047
    @andrewdowns9047 2 роки тому +173

Goddamn this is absolutely beautiful. Dare I say it one of the best horror shorts I have seen. I am going to skip a few lines to try and not spoil the story for anyone else.
-The cinematography is absolutely on point. The perspective, the use of cuts, the way that you focus on specific characters and shots. This is professionally made. It catches and hooks you on every moment, forces you to look at the reactions of the characters, and makes you really think that this is real. The use of lighting to show specific parts, such as the blood on Alex's face, is absolutely fantastic. The final shot of a closeup with the opening tent and the face of La Mimica is wondrous because its not a traditional jumpscare. You know what the story is so far, you know what's been happening, and the audience knows what is going to happen. It manages to scare the audience long after that know what the result is. That is a remarkable thing. It doesn't leave questions unanswered and yet still elicits a response.
-The sound design is another great factor. Many horror movies incorporate loud and sudden scares in order to terrify the viewer. The use of great environmental sounds as well as the focus on dialogue drives home not only the realism and immersion, but also maintains more traditional horror elements.
-The characters are really well-made. They simultaneously seem like a bunch of jerks, but in a way that delivers how they are actually good friends. They make smart decisions, they stay grounded in the moment, and they use what they know. This goes for Alex, Matt, Ian, and La Mimica. You get the sense like its a strategy game, like La Mimica has to know what people are, what these people are like, and how it can use its situation to its advantage. When it realizes that it can't reach Alex through logic, it instead relies on Alex's fearful but empathetic nature in order to trick him, showing how it understood his personality and used it against him. Alex could have asked that the two speak at the same time, or that they make other noises to confirm their identity, but the story made a point by showing how scared people actually can be in the moment. La Mimica had knowledge of the trio that would have seen borderline impossible to just have and Alex knew this, but he also couldn't shake the actual evidence like the blood, the guitar, and the fact that they made no effort to enter the tent. When they reached for the tent zipper, you could also see how they seemingly made no effort to pull down, they only pushed forward. Combined with the shaking and scratching, and you could tell that La Mimica was not only unfamiliar with the tent, but that it was waiting for the people inside to confirmed that they were actually there. There is, ultimately, a depth to all 4 characters that makes this a gripping story
-Speaking of story, the plot is executed nicely. It follows a traditional campfire ghost story turns true, but also incorporates elements that make it stand out. The way that Alex doses off for a second and sleeps another hour and a half certainly hits close to home, while the focus on showing how La Mimica can explain itself through technology partially implies a horrid reality to our own tech. One element that I am not sure of if intentional, but which I certainly noticed, was that while the overall tone and theme revolved around trust and paranoia, there is certainly an implication that the way our society is structured makes it difficult to trust people. The constant joking is great for the bros, but it also means that they can't be there for each other on a deeper level, which ends up hurting them when they face a life threatening situation. You honestly could have made a horror short about one of the friends being an abusive douche who uses humor to gaslight his friends without a monster to interject in that premise, and that would have had the same message as the one I am noticing. Again, though, I feel this is stretching.
I do have some criticism, however.
-La mimica certainly does not look terrifying. I don't know if its the lighting or the actual anatomy of the face, but it does not inspire any real fear looking at it. In fact, I would say that the reveal itself is in part ruined by the focus on a jumpscare of the face coming through the tent. It lacks substance without the overtly loud music, which I noticed by watching the film again on mute. It sort of pops its head up like it was lying down on the floor, and the off center way in which its head is pointed up makes it look more like its confused than like its a predator on the hunt. The lack of focus on Alex in the final shot also makes the tent seem like a larger setting than it should be when an 8 foot tall man eater is coming in. The strength of La Mimica comes from its behavior. The way it mimics the sounds of Ian, Matt, and the guitar, the way it uses logical reasoning to try and get through to Matt and Alex, the way it inspects the tent repeatedly, all of these create suspense and tension. The audience at this point is aware of the monster's description, and its by playing on what the audience knows instead of what the audience doesn't know that drives home just how scary the monster is. The reveal in part fails because it breaks the illusion of the scene; the monster no longer feels like its trying to kill Alex but like its trying to scare the audience. I would have preferred that the monster remain almost entirely unseen, as I feel like that is what the monster itself would want and would thus make the setting immersive, but I would rather not interject my own thoughts into what is otherwise a masterpiece of horror.
Everyone involved needs to be given a pat on the back and maybe a cookie. I absolutely loved this entire thing. Wish I could watch it for the first time again.

Out of the 14 years I have been making films and putting them on UA-cam, this is the single most detailed comment I have ever received. Thank you SO much for putting in so much time and effort to reflect your thoughts on my film!
You are absolutely on point with how the characters treat each other in a joking, teasing manner leading to their ultimate demise by not being honest and treating each other seriously. I jokingly refer to this short as "Gaslighting the Film" because if you assume there is no monster out there, poor Alex is gaslit by his friends the entire time 😂
The psychological side is what I really set out to create fear in this film and I'm glad all the pieces came together to make it work! As well, I'm very proud of how the characters behaved because I've historically been critiqued for bad acting and dumb characters. With this I wanted to clearly present distinct personalities with each character that would lead to reasonable conclusions they would reach throughout the film.
As for the ending, I spent so much time focusing on making this ending jumpscare work. I would say I was slightly successful as many do react to it. But I can agree that certain factors led to it being not as strong as it could have been. We used a smaller tent so that the actor (who was 6' 1") would appear larger but I don't think it fully comes across on screen. We also just had limited time and resources and something will always end up not being perfect. I can be proud of what I accomplished while keeping in mind what I can do to make it better next time.
Thank you so much for your detailed analysis. Your comment is the reason I make these films. I love when we discuss stories and characters! It makes me proud to make something that is real to others :)

One of the best scary videos from Cory's channel. Amazing job seriously! I think the scariest thing about the plot is that the main character(the scared guy) actually dealt with the situation really well until the mimica took it to the next level. He was smart and alerted enough to be careful with every one of his actions, but still ended up being manipulated and killed.. A plot like this can definitely be like a horror series.

This story is EXCELLENT! Not only do I love how smart the monster was, but I love how the protagonist himself was smart as well. To many horror films make their characters dumb, but Alex didn’t fully give in to the monster’s tricks for a good amount of time. It was cool to see the monster having to get creative with that “bear” to get Alex to finally open the tent. Makes me wonder what it would’ve done if Alex didn’t believe that charade either. 10/10

Woah that was such a cool story! The conflicted feelings Alex goes through trying to discern whether this is La Mímica or his friends, the uncertainty over with the clock and the guitar and the tent, it was so spooky!
    Spoiler alert:
One thing I’m curious though is though is how did La Mímica know about Tina the cat? Does it absorb the memories of its victims?
Also, is the title meant to be a hint as well? If so, that’s really clever!

    • @ChristopherCoxFilm
      @ChristopherCoxFilm  Рік тому +157

Thank you! I leave it to interpretation but my belief was that La Mimica was always listening to them by the campfire and Alex is very likely to mention his cat Tina at some point, especially because he sent a picture of her to a friend. It had to be good at listening since it could mimic these men perfectly.

Chances are that this entity absorbs everything about them. The way they speak, Their Vocabulary, what they know, and brain chemistry. Mind you the most important organ for the Mimicker, is the brain. So when someone speaks, the La Mimica automatically recognizes the voice, and the voice to use. This mechanism allows them to use a voice, usually of that of a friend, or a family member to the prey.

La mimica despite being very intelligent actually made some mistakes. The first was getting blood on Alex, because of that it had to lie and say it was fake. To test if it was real Alex just had to taste test the blood on his face.
The more obvious mistake though was the lie about the zipper being stuck. Its one of those zippers where it can be opened from the inside and out. So if it was stuck Alex would not have been able to open it either..

I think the point is it was just toying with its food. Predators can easily kill preys but their instinct is dominating first. Just like a cat cornering a mouse, they would still wait their prey to struggle by leaving a small gap for the mouse to believe it could run away. The monster probably had some fun chasing and torturing the friend outside too, that was why it took a whole hour to come to the tent. Otherwise if all it wanted was food, it could have come to the tent early and wrecked it. It's not that it couldn't come in or wreck the tent, it's simply its choice of amusement. While the preys in life or death situation would heavily rely on their possible way out. The most possible way out for human in this situation is to believe all this danger is not real, it's just a prank. The life threatening situation the monster created last was just a final push to make its last prey gives in to its false hope.

Believe me , or not, that is what happened to me and girlfriend 30 years ago, in a pinewood close to an alpine lake. we were in a small tent, and at about 1:00 pm, something woke us up. we both saw heads moving over the tent, and moves all around, and hand touching the tent. It stopped for a while. Then, I went up but nothing was in sight, just a clear night. We returned to sleep, but at 3.00 same thing, many heads swirling around and hands over the tent. We were absolutely stunned and terrified. We both started to pray slowly, then strongly, then nearly shouting. those things went out. We stayed awaken until the first rays of the sun hit the fields and the tent. All was gone. We made up everything in an unnatural, very quick manner, and reached the car a couple of hundred meters up. I still have a terror remebering that night.

Now we dont know how the creature is like until the end so it might have 4 regular arms for all we know so the creature is tricky but yeah. Something about the way a monster fakes communication, appearing to be understanding, yet it's only a trick it uses to hunt it's prey. NAH FAM, These dudes shouldn't on have opened the tent, idk how they felt pressured to open it, I'd rather let my "friends" stay outside the tent so its payback 4 fn with me. 10/10 film

That was so good. The tension that built up in the beginning by the slow zooms, the gradual off-key guitar, and the frequent cutting between the storyteller and the other guy, it built a sense of dread that didn't match the lighthearted tone of the speaker. Then the tent scene, that was just incredible. The psychological quality was way scarier than any horror I've seen in a long time. The monster was fucking with his mind, and him being a naturally wary person made a good stand. But in the end, he was won over out of concern for his friends, and that might have been the worst part of all. The only thing that didn't really scare me was the monster at the end, but everything else was amazing!

It's pretty tiring and frustrating seeing people make bad decisions in horror when they have no reason to so im glad that he didn't believe them at first and only fell for it because he was concerned about his friends + the mimica's manipulations.

I watched this on CoryxKehsin’s channel but hands down one of the best short horror films I’ve seen on UA-cam there was the horror movie logic, the suspense, and top-tier acting. Awesome video, can’t wait binge watch this channel soon.

100% one of the best short horror films I've seen, the atmosphere, the plausibility. I actually forgot I was in my room for a second.

You have really improved in filmmaking over the past couple of years! This was really good. The last part was really intense. I really felt the character. Also because in the last part the camera never leaves the tent, so the viewer also cant be sure what's out there. And the acting of the creature was very believable, i truly wasn't sure if its a real person. That also makes you feel exactly what the character feels. In conclusion, great work! Im down for new stuff!
Edit: i hope i said everything right, im not English, i only learn it. so..

Thank you so much! I knew it was important to keep the viewer in the tent. Limited perspective really helps build the mystery and paranoia because we only know what the characters know. So we’re with them in the scary situation.

here from coryxkenshin! gotta say this is one of my favorite short horror films i have seen. but i recently have gotten to learn more about cinematography and such which allows me to be more attentive when watching movies. i am really impressed by how this has gotten my attention and i was invested the whole time, i also love the mind tricks that it plays as the viewer doesn’t know what to think! this is what i love about cinematography stuff.

I do wonder if there's a certain way that you could possibly outsmart the monster.
What if you ask them to speak at the same time? We know it can mimic voices fast. But what if I ask it to both count to 10 at the same time. Would it be able to do it perfectly?
