I dunno why but Baku's "There ain't much treasure left in the world, boy" during his pep talk to Zidane always hits hard.

What a melancholy remix of Zidane’s theme 😢

feels like the days of our youth, the summers of love and then a touch of despair when it ends...

When they start using this track in Alexandria in Disc 3, it contrasts so well with Lindblum's state at the time. Lindblum seems confident in its ability to rebuild. Alexandria? Not so much.

Lindblum had their King, even if not in human form still better than a dead ruler

I found it extreme that Baku's first course of action upon Zidane's return is to give him a good beating, but again Zidane never mentioned that he announced his departure to Baku before he left, leaving the old fella worried sick about Zidane for who knows how long

0:00 Zidane "Think about it..." "Vivi's never met black mages like himself before."
Well technically Vivi did, with the Black Waltzes, which wasn't exactly a positive interaction.
Dagger "But what if they're being mean to him, or saying nasty things?"
Did the Black Mages that you talked to in the village give any impression that they were assholes?
Skipping ahead into Zidane telling his backstory. It is interesting, but why is he only telling it now and not way earlier, such as in Dali, if he wanted the girl he loves to know him so much? In FFVII we are given constant hints of Cloud's story starting right at the beginning of the game when we get to the core of Mako Reactor 1, we see the flashback to the promise he made to Tifa (a much better love story than Zidane's and Garnet's) and right after the prologue we go to Kalm to hear Cloud's backstory of the Nibelheim incident. (Even if it wasn't the whole truth) But there is barely any build up with Zidane, and it gets even worse when Terra is thrown into the picture.
[Screen fades to black, then shows the Tantalus hideout. Zidane approaches Baku]
"What do you think his father did when he came home?"
    "...Welcome him home?"
"No way!" "The father raised his fist and beat the son he had worked so hard to raise..."
    Wham! Pow! Whack! Bam!
Okay, that is straight up abuse. How is Baku supposed to be a sympathetic and likeable character again?
    "Why?"
"I don't know..." "But you know what surprised him even more?" "The father smiled, after beating up his son!" "Can you believe that? He just gave his son a beating." "But this is what the man thought when he saw his father smile..." "This is my home. This is the place I call home." "The man is still looking for his birthplace. But he already has a home. Maybe..."
Yes because that totally excuses Baku beating up his kid. Why does Baku have such a fetish for beating the shit out of his children? This also "totally" excuses Baku wanting to leave Dagger in the Evil Forest, which would have no doubt landed him in very hot water with Cid (and also wasting Zidane's time to get to her by trying to beat him up again), this sets off some unfortunate implications.
Also, the other problem here is that Dagger is being sluggish and amorphous. She practically does not really react to anything, even when there is such a reason to.
Black Mage No. 288 "You're very kind to use our words." "But you already know what it means to live...and to die." "You're asking about our friends who have 'died,' not 'stopped.'"
Which is all ironic because all of you are technically already dead. (This ties into what the Mist actually is)
    Vivi "Um..."
Black Mage No. 288 "Seven of our friends stopped functioning recently..." "I think our life span is limited..." "I've suspected this ever since the first one came to a stop." "It varies a little, but most of us stop moving one year after production."
    Vivi "No..."
Black Mage No. 288 "I haven't told anyone else about this. If I did, they'd feel the same way I do."
    Vivi "What do you feel?"
Black Mage No. 288 "I don't know... Fear? I don't want to stop. And maybe I want to run away from it all." "But living in this village with everyone fills me with joy." "The joy of living with them far outweighs the fear of death." "Isn't it the same for you? Traveling with your friends gives your life meaning."
This is one of the problems. Vivi is tormented by existential issues, yet is resolved by one elementary remark: cogito ergo sum. (I think, therefor I am) All the chatter about the fear of death is solved by an equally banal answer about the need to "leave your mark on life, to make a difference". Okay, just let them live a year or two, and other people, forty times more, but I digress because this is irrelevant considering truth about the Mist, the implications, and how pretentious this whole thing is, which I'll be talking about once we get to the Iifa Tree and see the Soul Cage.
