The Departed gets shit on by fans of the original, but I've seen em both. The Scorsese version I prefer cuz of the humor. Whomever rewrote it added a ton a humor. I love the fact that Scorsese obsessed for months over the ending, and came up with the rat, appearing in the last shot. Really? I thought he was completely miscast, as he is in most Scorsese movies. He's a great actor, but there's not a single performance he has done in a Scorsese movie that has impressed me. He's done fantastic performances in other people's movies during the same time period: "Revolutionary Road", "Django Unchained", etc, but I just think he's just Marty's way of greenlighting movies in his old age. Even Nicholson - who has some fantastic moments, as usual - was a bit of disappointment in this one for me. But as far as Leo is concerned? You'd know he was the rat in two seconds just by looking at him. Damon was fantastic in this; of the two young dudes, I was way more impressed by his performance, which I did not have on my Bingo card when I bought my movie ticket. Leo's best head to heads in a Scorsese film are in Gangs of New York against Daniel Day-Lewis. Jack was suitably villainous in The Departed, but he's no Bill The Butcher. That Leo held his own in those scenes is a testament to what he can do when the material serves him specifically (unlike Wolf of Wall Street or The Aviator, where he seems COMPLETELY miscast).

The main reason for Jack Nicholson’s face being fairly hidden at the start of the movie was to hide his age. When he stepped into the light clearly for the first time, they did some de-aging work to make the rest of the movie (age difference) work smoothly.

The question to myself is how did I not know of these guys being of Irish descent myself. But then again I was born and raised in the PNW instead of the east coast like Boston or even Chicago where Irish culture is more prevalent. I think Scorsese backlit Jack Nicholson to hide his age in the beginning, before de-aging CGI became common with the Disney Star Wars. The same can be said for the way Coppola backlit Marlon Brando in Apocalypse Now to hide his overweight appearance. Overall this is one of my favorite gangster/Scorsese/Leo/Damon/Nicholson and by far my favorite Marky Mark film. Well deserved Oscars for best director and picture.

Yes. The Departed is great but the character work is much better in the Hong Kong original. I finished this one thinking, "That was a good movie," and ended Infernal Affairs teary-eyed.
The movie series this is based on is Infernal Affairs (i, II and III), which is set in Hong Kong. The premise is roughly the same though there are some significant differences. Because of this they were able to make it into a trilogy. Some of the scenes and shots though are almost identical!
The foreign film this was based off is a Hong Kong trilogy called Infernal Affairs. The Departed has many scenes, shot for shot, taken from the first movie. However, this is one of the only times I will say, the remake (The Departed) is better than the original (Infernal Affairs 1). I do think both are worth a watch, but the writer for The Departed took all the best part and rewrote all the bad. And those rewrites is what makes The Departed a 10 fold better film.
The end shot is the gold roof of state capitol building…..ultimate power with a rat in foreground walking across windowsill, get it? Scorsese is so very good at Irish mentality and behavior, for an Italian.

Saw it in the theatre. Was as shocked as anyone when the elevator door opened. I've been trying to tell the Re-actor world that someone needs to do "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" perhaps Leo D-Cap's greatest performance. After which I told by my friends....this guy is this generation's Clint Eastwood. Meaning he will be making movies and killing it from here on out. This was in 1995/96ish. I feel like I nailed that prediction.
I saw this in the theaters and I've loved it ever since. I do feel like it gets, maybe not forgotten, but overlooked when people talk about '00's cinema. I do remember even at the time people were saying Scorsese's Best Director win was more of an acknowledgement of his career greatness than this film specifically deserving the award. Personally, I think that he does a masterful job of interweaving the two leads while keeping the tension high and moving the plot forward relentlessly.
Look up here, Matt Damon talks about Jack during, the departed. He does a dead on jack immitation, and how jack, expands a scene!! For instance when he shoots the girl on the beack, is a riot!
The film it's based on, 'Infernal Affairs', is brilliant. This is one of those times a Hollywood remake is just as good as the film it's based on though.
My old roommate and I used to work in high end audio. That's a McIntosh (not Apple, but McIntosh the high end Binghamton, NY company) audio gear stack that Matt Damon has in his apartment. There some serious cash in there.
10:32 One of the funniest scenes in this movie is so overshadowed and so Scorsese: French walks out of there after cursing billy out for beating that guy -“Ehh f()ckem, he don’t need his teeth anyway… (to frank) “… he just knocked out Jimmy Bagg’s teeth!” -Frank: “So??”
13:40 How did he send that? Was your first phone a smart phone? Because anyone who had those kinds of cell phones knew how to text like that. He'd know what buttons to press to bring up Frank Costello in his phone and as for typing the message, you can feel where the numbers are and everyone had the letters to numbers memorized cause it has never changed.
You should watch one of my all time childhood favorite movies called The Double McGuffin. It has an Orsen Wells voiceover. I promise Shan it’s right up your alley.
Goodfellas, Raging Bull. Wolf of Wallstreet, Casino, Taxi Driver, The Departed, Mean Streets, Gangs of New York. In that order. Not a loser among them.
It was crazy to go from almost 2 hours of anxiety to the high of Leo making his arrest, absolute low of him getting unceremoniously popped and then the soaring high of mark coming out of let field with the clutch play. Roller coaster
Not only never seen it, never even heard of it. Seen only one other reaction to it. So far it seems like one of those star-studded movies that DON'T make the cut with a major cluster-fuck or a plot but I'll check it out this weekend just to be sure.
Shanelle this was a great time. im so glad you liked it. i have a request for you- Something Wild, directed by Jonathan Demme. its maybe one of the best 80s film ever. Demme would later direct Silence of the Lambs among other great films. its Ray Liotta (from goodfellas) first film. it has an amazing soundtrack and its just really fun altogether- colorful, erotic, dark and masterful. i believe its showing on Prime rn too. YOU WOULD LOVE.
This movie was a remake of the Hong Kong cinema flick called: 'Infernal Affairs,' which is leagues ahead of 'The Departed,' filmmaking, casting and acting wise. Like, one thee best films I've seen, which hollywood made a lesser version of. Watch it if you don't believe me. It's incredible and makes this film pale in comparison!!!!
every single time i watch this movie, i feel like its literally an algebra problem, and we see both sides of the equal sign trying to balance out. and in the end we are left with one remainder....sgt dignam.
One of my favourite things regarding the film is the clip of Matt Damon discussing Nicholson and the "She fell funny" scene-- ua-cam.com/users/shortsteK_CFdc7gM?feature=share
Jack Nicholson's character was loosely based on real life gangster whitey Bulger, there was a great movie about him that came out a few years ago called black mass starring Johnny Depp
Regarding Sullivan being impotent: There are numerous thinly-veiled intimations throughout the movie that both Costello and Sullivan were closeted gay (or bi). This matches with the real Whitey Bulger, on whom Nicholson's character was based, and who was followed by similar rumors while he was alive (and since).
This is my favorite movie of all time I like to mess with people's heads by saying Mark Wahlberg's character was actually part of the Irish Mob to tie up lose ends at the end
At the very beginning, I'd argue that it's maybe the opposite of racism. He's not saying they're different bc their skincolor. He's saying despite their skin color they're the same. He's speaking as to a peer or equal. Where as the "not racist" stat quo treats them like they're an endangered bird species that we know what's best for and can't think for themselves

I've seen this movie several times and I just noticed the symbolic rat in the last frame, on the window ledge looking out to the state house. 30:31
30:48 - That ending's almost as crazy as the one in the Penn and Teller movie...almost.
The building at the end with gold dome is the Massachusetts state house in Boston.
Martin Forshadowed Xs behind everybody that was going to die. Throughout the film The Departed you see Hints everywhere
My old roommate and I used to work in high end audio. That's a McIntosh (not Apple, but McIntosh the high end Binghamton, NY company) audio gear stack that Matt Damon has in his apartment. There some serious cash in there.
10:32 One of the funniest scenes in this movie is so overshadowed and so Scorsese: French walks out of there after cursing billy out for beating that guy -“Ehh f()ckem, he don’t need his teeth anyway… (to frank) “… he just knocked out Jimmy Bagg’s teeth!”
-Frank: “So??”
While the movie is a remake, the villain is based on a real life Mob boss named James "Whitey" Bulger. Of course he denies that he was an informant.
13:40
How did he send that?
Was your first phone a smart phone?
Because anyone who had those kinds of cell phones knew how to text like that.
He'd know what buttons to press to bring up Frank Costello in his phone and as for typing the message, you can feel where the numbers are and everyone had the letters to numbers memorized cause it has never changed.
Oh idk I remember constantly texting on my real-button phones in my pocket blind all the time back in the day. Muuuuuch easier than with touch screens
"Don't just stare at it, Depart it!"
You should watch one of my all time childhood favorite movies called The Double McGuffin. It has an Orsen Wells voiceover. I promise Shan it’s right up your alley.
Saw it twice in theaters (the second time to analyze Scorsese's use of dramatic irony for class 🤓). Lotta great performances.
This is a reason why my top 3 Writer/Directors are as follows;
1. Kevin Smith
2. Quentin Tarantino
3. Marty Scorsese
Always, and Forever
And Actor/Directors ?
"I love it when I get what I want" me too!
Goodfellas, Raging Bull. Wolf of Wallstreet, Casino, Taxi Driver, The Departed, Mean Streets, Gangs of New York. In that order. Not a loser among them.
That building with the gold roof is the state house.
It was crazy to go from almost 2 hours of anxiety to the high of Leo making his arrest, absolute low of him getting unceremoniously popped and then the soaring high of mark coming out of let field with the clutch play. Roller coaster
But Matt is the rat
If you want more, Infernal Affairs the Asian movie this is based on is a TRILOGY ! The second which is a prequel is one of the best films ever made.
This gangster movie is a classic and the closing at 28:52 and ending death were both sucker punches.
This definitely competes for my favorite movie of all time, obviously there are so many great movies but this one is special
I'd love to see u on stage!! 🥰
And I love how the phone plays his own part.
sent it blind with t9 texting. pretty fast when you know what key to hit and how many times.
You'll love 'The Wolf Of Wall Street'
Happy Easter from Ireland.
Not only never seen it, never even heard of it. Seen only one other reaction to it. So far it seems like one of those star-studded movies that DON'T make the cut with a major cluster-fuck or a plot but I'll check it out this weekend just to be sure.
Spy v Spy. A cold war genre. CIA v KGB. Adapted to police v mafia Great movie
Great suggestion of a great movie that has been sadly forgotten
This movie was a remake of the Hong Kong cinema flick called: 'Infernal Affairs,' which is leagues ahead of 'The Departed,' filmmaking, casting and acting wise. Like, one thee best films I've seen, which hollywood made a lesser version of. Watch it if you don't believe me. It's incredible and makes this film pale in comparison!!!!
My favorite part of the video is how you pronounced impotent lol
❤❤❤❤ Awesome!! Love this movie. Thanks Shanelle, ❤ from 🇨🇦
every single time i watch this movie, i feel like its literally an algebra problem, and we see both sides of the equal sign trying to balance out. and in the end we are left with one remainder....sgt dignam.
Brilliant film. One little feature I liked about this is that an “X” always appears just before a character dies
You absolutely can send t9 texts without looking lol. I used to do it in class all the time
the perfect setup for a spit take, and somehow she failed to do it! Darnit.
Great Film!!!!!!
What about Goodfellas, Taxi Driver & Casino.
Classic Scorsese Films
